Kumar Dharmasena pacifies KL Rahul after Krishna-Root fight; India star replies ‘What do you want us to do? Be quite?'

Mint3 days ago
Tempers flared at The Oval on Friday when India pacer Prasidh Krishna got involved in a heated exchange of words with England batter Joe Root on the second day of the fifth and final Test. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has been no short of entertainment and the Krishna-Root fight added another drama in the growing list.
The incident took place on the 22nd over of England's first innings when Krishna threw some words at Root after the England batter opened his account with a boundary through the gully region. Root, a cool and calm character, looked visibly miffed, gave it back to the Indian.
Although its unclear what the conversation was about between the duo, the umpires had to intervene and calm things down. While Root chose not to escalate things further, on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena had a word with Krishna, warning him. However, things didn't end there.
KL Rahul, who was lurking around, made his entry into the scene and had his version with Dharmasena, the conversation of which was caught in the stump mic. 'What do you want us to do? Be quite?' was Rahul's first reaction to Dharmasena.
'You will like any other bowler come and talk to you? No, you can't do that. We should not go that way,' was Dharmasena's reply to Rahul. In response the Indian batter said, 'What do you want us to do? Just bat and bowl and go home?'
The Sri Lanka then replied, 'We will discuss at the end of the match. You can't talk like that.' Root was finally dismissed for 29 after Mohammed Siraj hit his pads straight in front.
Meanwhile rain stopped play for the first time on Day 2 after Tea break with England at 242/8 in 48 overs. Having started the day at 204/6, India lasted only 34 balls in the morning to be all out for 224. In reply, England were off to a flier with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley putting on 92 runs for the first wicket.
However, India made a huge comeback with Mohammed Siraj and Krishna sharing seven wickets between them after Akash Deep frew the first blood. It must be noted that England will bat nine wickets in the Test match since Chris Woakes has been ruled out with an injury.

World Champion Gukesh acknowledges the massive achievement of Divya Deshmukh: 'It is not easy to win the tournament'

World Champion of Chess, D Gukesh, acknowledges the grand achievement of Divya Deshmukh, who recently won the FIDE Women's World Cup in Batumi. read more In a span of just two years, Indian chess has soared to the exosphere. Whether it's the Olympiad, the World Championship, or the FIDE World Cup, the Indian flag is flying high in every aspect of the Chess bloc. After D Gukesh's historic World Championship victory, all eyes are on Divya Deshmukh, who is making similar strides in the women's category. The 19-year-old recently clinched the FIDE Women's World Cup, held in Batumi, Georgia, and qualified for the Candidates tournament. Moreover, she also completed the last norm required to become a Grandmaster and claimed the title in the best way possible. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gukesh acknowledges Divya's massive achievement As class often recognises class, Divya's ascension has been noted by Gukesh, who also had a few things to say about the achievement of India's newest Grandmaster. 'We (Gukesh and Divya) basically grew up together. We played in the same tournaments right from when we were eight or nine years old. The way Divya won the World Cup was really inspiring. It is not easy to win the tournament, you have to play regularly for a month. I have played the World Cup two times, so I know how difficult it is to win,' Gukesh said in a Velammal Nexus event that was organised to felicitate Mount Everest conqueror Ashish. 'Both of them (Divya and losing finalist, veteran Koneru Humpy) played amazingly well. For Indian chess, it is important that we have good results in both men (open) and women." Having played the FIDE World Cup twice, World Champion Gukesh will aim to win the whole thing when he takes part in the tournament, slated to take place later in the year in India. 'For sure, I will take part in the World Cup. I am really excited and looking forward to it. In chess, we do not have many knockout events, so the World Cup is the biggest knockout tournament. After the Olympiad (in 2022), India hosting a big event is important for Indian chess,' added Gukesh, who will be gunning for his maiden WC trophy. Given Divya has already bagged the prize, India will complete a World Cup double should Gukesh or any other contender from India go on to win the competition.

Paris Olympics medallist Aman seals worlds berth

New Delhi: As India's freestyle wrestling goes through a period of transition, Aman Sehrawat has single-handedly kept the flag flying. He was the only Indian wrestler to return with a medal from the Paris Olympics. The 22-year-old will again carry the nation's hopes in the men's section at the upcoming World Championships in Zagreb in September. Paris Olympics bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat (in blue) competes during the World Wrestling Championships trials, in Lucknow. (PTI) A bronze at the Asian Games (2022) and gold at the 2023 Asian Championships ahead of the Paris performance highlight his consistency at major events. On Monday, Aman sailed through the selection trials in Lucknow, securing the berth in the 57kg category, defeating Sumit and Rahul by technical superiority. Another prominent name in the 10-member men's freestyle team is World Championships and Asian Games medallist Deepak Punia, who will compete in the 92kg class. The promising Sujeet Kalkal won the trials in the 65kg category. This will be Sehrawat's maiden appearance at the World Championships but he welcomes the pressure, saying it keeps him motivated. 'The admiration and support I receive give me the energy to perform on the mat, so I'm fine with the pressure. As an Olympic medallist, I understand that people expect me to return with a medal from the World Championships, and I will give my best shot for gold,' Sehrawat told HT. 'I have worked hard on my defence during training stints in Japan and Russia. I got to spar with some strong international wrestlers, which really helped. My leg defence has been a weak area, and I've worked extremely hard to improve it. The worlds will be a good test,' he said. It has been a tough season for Sehrawat. He struggled with injury and took time to return to the mat. 'There was a problem with my knee at the start of the year, so I didn't compete in the trials for the Asian Championships. I wanted to be fully fit before making a comeback. It was important to get some practice before the worlds, so I competed in the Ulaanbaatar Ranking Series.' Sehrawat won bronze at that tournament and was happy with his progress. 'I was competing after almost a year. It was an opportunity to get back on the mat and test my fitness, so I was satisfied with the result.' 'I've been working on my fitness, and today I felt good on the mat. In the 57kg, there are some strong wrestlers — Olympic gold medallist Rei Higuchi of Japan and silver medallist Spencer Lee from the USA. I'll have to see who all are competing at the worlds this time, but I feel I have a good chance,' said Sehrawat, who trains at Delhi's Chhatrasal Stadium. Among the new faces, Sujeet and Udit (61kg) are expected to put up strong performances. Sujeet has shown good form internationally and recently impressed at the ranking series in Hungary, winning the top prize. Udit claimed silver at the Senior Asian Championships and the 2025 Ulaanbaatar Open. The worlds will be a valuable testing ground for these young talents. Team: Aman Sehrawat (57kg), Udit (61kg), Sujeet Kalkal (65kg), Rohit (70kg), Jaideep (74kg), Amit (79kg), Mukul (86kg), Deepak Punia (92kg), Vickey (97kg), Rajat (125kg).
