Govt planted 15.72 cr saplings in urban regions, 1.76 cr in rural areas

Gandhinagar: As the nationwide 'Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam' campaign completed a year on June 5, the state govt said on Tuesday that it planted 17.48 crore saplings and secured the second position in the country.

Kutch district led by planting 2.95 lakh saplings over the past year, the govt said.
An official statement mentioned that 1.76 crore saplings were planted in rural areas of the state, while 15.72 crore saplings were planted in urban areas over the past year.
The statement also noted that in Gujarat, 5,500 villages established 'Matruvan' as part of the 75th Van Mahotsav in 2024. Additionally, under the 'Van Kavach' scheme, 10,000 saplings were planted using the Miyawaki method, preparing 122 Van Kavach over 200 hectares in 2024-25.
The govt announced on Tuesday that Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will commence work on 'Sindoor Van' on June 5 under Mission 4 Million Trees.
An oxygen park with 12,000 trees, including 551 sindoor trees in 'Sindoor Van', will be established in a 5,000 sq m area near the Jagatpur Bridge in the Chandlodia area of the city.
Chief minister Bhupendra Patel and ministers will plant saplings at the secretariat premises in Gandhinagar on June 5 to mark World Environment Day, the govt statement added.

Centre, state committed to make Uttarakhand national horticulture hub: Chouhan
Dehradun, The Centre and the Uttarakhand government are committed to making the state a national hub of horticulture, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Friday. Direct communication with the farmers ensures their strong participation," he said at the Chaupal. Talking to the media, he said the state government is doing excellent work in the field of agriculture under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The Centre, along with the Uttarakhand government, will ensure that the farmers here not only get the benefit of modern agricultural techniques, but also get markets for their products at the national and international level, he said. Further, Chouhan said farming will be made more profitable in future by giving special emphasis on natural farming, technological innovation and water conservation.

‘To boost clean urban mobility': PM Modi flags off 200 e-buses on World Environment Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the occasion of World Environment Day on Thursday, flagged off 200 electric buses in Delhi to promote green and clean urban transport, said officials. After inaugurating the bus, the PM stated that the initiative will contribute to building a clean and green Delhi. He further underlined that this step will also improve the 'Ease of Living' for the people of Delhi, according to an official statement from the PM's office. By the end of 2025, the CM added, 2,080 buses will be provided to Delhi, and by 2027, the Delhi government's public transport fleet will be fully electric. She also mentioned that a new EV policy will be implemented soon by the Delhi government.

A case for dispersing lion numbers
The impressive increase in the number of Asiatic lions in India marks a major success in wildlife conservation. The latest census in the Gir forests in Gujarat, the only home to the animal, saw the number rise by a third – from 674 in 2020 to 891. Gir had only about 200 lions in the 1960s and the number has steadily increased over the decades. Much of the increase was after 1995 when the lions' range was doubled from 6,600 sq km to 13,000 sq km. The Project Lion programme, launched by the Union government in 2020 on the lines of Project Tiger, did much to enhance the number through habitat restoration and prey-base enhancement. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who announced the new census numbers, claimed that the increase was also the result of the state government's dedicated the numbers also raise concerns. Only 56% of Gujarat's 891 lions are resident in forested areas. As many as 507 live in revenue areas and lion corridors outside the habitat areas. Seven sites in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh were identified under Project Lion for the relocation but the process has not commenced. A target has been set to double the lion population to 2,000 in the coming years. This cannot be achieved unless a major relocation effort is initiated.
