Divya's win a national milestone: CJI

1 2 Nagpur: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai on Saturday visited the Shankar Nagar residence of 19-year-old Divya Deshmukh to congratulate her on becoming the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women's World Cup. Calling her triumph "a defining moment for Indian sport," the CJI said her achievement will serve as an enduring inspiration to future generations. "Her win is not just a proud moment for Nagpur or Maharashtra, but for the entire nation," said Gavai, presenting her with a chessboard and bouquet. "It reflects a rare blend of intellect, discipline, and determination." Gavai was accompanied by Delhi High Court senior judge Nitin Sambre and Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court's administrative judge Anil Kilor. The visit was also a personal one—Gavai revealed that his family has a three-generation association with Divya's lineage. "My father, the late RS Gavai, the former governor, was a close friend of her grandfather, Dr KG Deshmukh, who was the founding vice-chancellor of Amravati University and also a former MPSC chairman. He treated Divya's grandmother, Dr Komal Deshmukh, as his younger sister," he said. "So, this is a proud moment for our family as well." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Divya said, "I was extremely happy and honoured that the CJI visited our home. Vendors evicted during Prez visit want biz back

Dhanbad: The street vendors in Hirapur protested on Saturday, demanding permission to set up shops at their earlier locations. The vendors were removed in an anti-encroachment drive which was carried out by the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) as a part of cleanliness drive ahead of Murmu's visit. "We supported the administration, and we were told that once the President's visit was over, we would be allowed to set up our shops again. This is not just about our business, but our livelihood," said Shyamal Majumdar, one of vendors who led the protests, said. The vendors argued that during the encroachment drive, they were assured that after the President's visit, the town's beautification efforts would be followed by an arrangement to reinstate them at their previous locations. "We were promised that we could reopen our shops after the visit, but now, we are left without any means of earning," he added. One of the protestors, Raju Saw, a fruit seller from the Police Line area, said, "I have not earned a single penny since my shop was removed. I sold my remaining stock at a loss, but I still couldn't recover my investments. I am in debt. The district administration must keep its promise and allow us to reestablish our businesses." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Global Indices Are on the Move — Time to Trade! Conduct stringent roll checks: IPFT urges EC

Agartala: In a move mirroring Tipra Motha, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura ( IPFT ), a key ally of the ruling BJP, has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to implement rigorous document verification during the electoral roll revision to block illegal migrants from being listed. IPFT general secretary Swapan Debbarma confirmed the party's participation in the ECI's consultative meeting, aimed at gathering political parties' insights ahead of the nationwide rollout of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a process initially tested in Bihar. "They wanted to hear our views on the SIR. We provided our suggestions and shared our concerns. We emphasised that proper document verification is essential during the revision process to ensure that only legitimate citizens are enrolled in the voter list," Debbarma said. Led by cooperation minister and senior IPFT figure Sukla Charan Noatia, the IPFT delegation submitted a memorandum to the ECI, outlining critical electoral concerns in Tripura. Highlighting the issue of illegal migration, Debbarma alleged that numerous individuals in Tripura possess forged documents. "We urged the commission to enforce stringent verification to safeguard the electoral process's integrity and protect genuine citizens' rights," he added. The IPFT, advocating for a separate Tipraland since 2010, has consistently raised alarms over demographic shifts in Tripura, accusing Bengalis of being Bangladeshi intruders.
