Conduct stringent roll checks: IPFT urges EC

Election Commission of India
(ECI) to implement rigorous document verification during the electoral roll revision to block illegal migrants from being listed.
IPFT general secretary Swapan Debbarma confirmed the party's participation in the ECI's consultative meeting, aimed at gathering political parties' insights ahead of the nationwide rollout of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, a process initially tested in Bihar.
"They wanted to hear our views on the SIR. We provided our suggestions and shared our concerns. We emphasised that proper document verification is essential during the revision process to ensure that only legitimate citizens are enrolled in the voter list," Debbarma said.
Led by cooperation minister and senior IPFT figure Sukla Charan Noatia, the IPFT delegation submitted a memorandum to the ECI, outlining critical electoral concerns in Tripura. Highlighting the issue of illegal migration, Debbarma alleged that numerous individuals in Tripura possess forged documents. "We urged the commission to enforce stringent verification to safeguard the electoral process's integrity and protect genuine citizens' rights," he added.
The IPFT, advocating for a separate Tipraland since 2010, has consistently raised alarms over demographic shifts in Tripura, accusing Bengalis of being Bangladeshi intruders.

"Does not the migrant worker return to Bihar at the time of the Chhath puja festival?" he said. "A person to be enrolled as a voter must have a fixed and permanent legal home. The migrant worker has such a home in Bihar (or another state). How can he/she be enrolled as a voter in Tamil Nadu?" Chidambaram said. If the migrant worker's family has a permanent home in Bihar and lives in Bihar, how can the migrant worker be considered as "permanently migrated" to Tamil Nadu, he further asked. "The ECI is abusing its powers and trying to change the electoral character and patterns of States. This abuse of powers must be fought politically and legally," Chidambaram said. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses of Parliament.
