Shakespeare's plays have played major role in expanding Kannada consciousness: MVU VC

Dharwad: Vice-chancellor of Maharshi Valmiki University Shivanand Kelaginamani said translations of English works played a significant role in shaping Kannada literature in the pre-Navodaya period and Shakespeare's plays brought a new wave of excitement to Kannada literature and theatre. Inaugurating a lecture series on Shakespeare's plays, organised by Dharwad Katte in association with CVG Publications, Bengaluru, and Maharshi Valmiki University held at Bendre Bhavan in Dharwad he said their themes, sensibilities, language, and style expanded the creative possibilities of Kannada literature. Kannadigas, he said, welcomed Shakespeare's plays. Through adaptations, the Kannada language tried to make Shakespeare's works its own, he added. "Shakespeare is not a writer beyond question. Many philosophical crises are evident in his works," Kelaginamani remarked. "He was a problematic author. Both his life and writings carried complexities. Shakespeare spoke openly about the world but never uttered a word about himself. The central theme of his plays was exploration. He tried to understand the inner depths of the world. Hamlet was a meditative, contemplative mind and such a mind would never resort to murder," said writer RG Hegde. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 3 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning Get Fit Today Click Here Undo Venkatagiri Dalawai opined that the problem with Kannada's engagement with Shakespeare lies in knowing him only through English. "Shakespeare must be accessed in Kannada itself, so that Kannadigas can truly own him. He had many disagreements with Christianity and Christians. His plays were not author-centric, they were centred on the work itself," he said. Prof Basavaraj Donur observed that Shakespeare's plays offer solutions to numerous philosophical, social, religious, moral, political, literary, and cultural crises in India. "The contemporary relevance of his plays is astonishing. Shakespeare was a rare genius that the world has seen. No other author has spoken about human nature, divinity, and nature the way he has. The British revere Shakespeare above all, he is their identity, their past, present, and future," he said. Vijaykumar Katagihallimath and Danayya Mahantayya Hiremath also spoke on the occasion. Aamir Khan and family respond to Faissal Khan's ‘hurtful' comments: 'Distressed by his misleading portrayal'

Aamir Khan and his family have issued a public statement expressing sadness and concern over recent remarks made by his brother, Faissal Khan. The comments, which touched on family matters and their mother Zeenat Tahir Husain, have been described by the family as 'hurtful and misleading.' In a statement shared with the media, the family said, 'We are distressed by Faissal's hurtful and misleading portrayal of his mother Zeenat Tahir Husain, his sister Nikhat Hegde, and his brother Aamir. As this is not the first time he has misrepresented these events, we feel it necessary to clarify our intentions, and reaffirm our solidarity as a family.' The statement was signed by several members of the extended Khan family, including Aamir's ex-wife Reena Datta, his children Junaid and Ira Khan, as well as Kiran Rao, Mansoor Khan, Nuzhat Khan, Imran Khan, and others. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Faissal Khan made several serious claims about his past relationship with his family. He alleged that years ago, his family accused him of having schizophrenia and considered him a threat to society. He claimed, 'They were saying I've got schizophrenia and I'm a mad person. I can harm society. Ye sab baatein ho rahi thi (All this was being talked about). I was looking at myself ki yaar main iss chakravyuh se kaise niklu. Chakravyuh ho gaya tha mere liye. Main usme fass gaya tha kyunki saari family mere khilaaf jaa rahi thi. Mujhe pagal samjh rahe the (How do I get out of this trap? It was a trap for me. I was stuck in it because my family was against me. They were thinking I'm mad)." Faissal went on to say that he was locked in a room at Aamir Khan's home for over a year. "Aamir had locked me inside the house for a year. My phone was taken, I couldn't go out. There were bodyguards outside my room. I was given medicine,' he said. He also claimed that during this time, he had no way to contact his father or others outside the home, adding that it felt like he was trapped. The Khan brothers have had a difficult relationship over the years. Their issues became public in the early 2000s when Faissal was involved in a legal battle over his signatory rights. He also underwent a 20-day mental health evaluation at JJ Hospital, where he was declared mentally fit by doctors. While the two starred together in the 2000 film 'Mela', their personal relationship has remained strained ever since. The recent family statement does not go into further detail but aims to make it clear that the rest of the family stands united and is troubled by Faissal's repeated claims.

Lights, Camera, Policy: Delhi To Get New Filming Plan To Attract Global Eye

New Delhi: Delhi is eyeing a place on the global film map, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announcing that her government will roll out a new policy to position the national capital as an international shooting destination. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Celebrating India Film Festival (CIFF) at Siri Fort, Ms Gupta said the policy will introduce a single-window clearance system for approving film and other shoot applications. The government also plans to build world-class industry infrastructure to make Delhi a full-fledged film hub. "We are deeply committed to transforming Delhi into a film hub," she said. Rs 30 Crore For International Film Festival Alongside the policy, the CM announced that the government will co-organise an International Film Festival in the capital with a budget allocation of Rs 30 crore. The event aims to bring together filmmakers, distributors and creative professionals from across the globe, while also showcasing Delhi's culture and diversity. Ms Gupta described the festival as a milestone in Delhi's cultural journey. "Imagining such a magnificent event in the heart of Delhi - and then turning it into reality - is no easy task. This festival has sent out a message that Delhi is now moving towards becoming a new centre for film production and cultural expression," she said. From Stage To Screen - Keeping Talent In Delhi The CM pointed out that despite housing the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi has never had a serious initiative to develop its own film industry. "Until now, Mumbai has been synonymous with the film and entertainment industry. Talent from Delhi that manages to make headway often moves to Mumbai for better opportunities. Why should people learn acting in Delhi, only to be forced to seek work in Mumbai?" she asked. Ms Gupta said her government aims to ensure that everyone involved in cinema, television and OTT production has access to everything from shooting to post-production within the city. This, she said, would mean local artists no longer have to migrate for work. Boosting Tourism And Creative Economy The government has earmarked Rs 3 crore specifically to turn Delhi into a hotspot for film production. Officials expect a sharp rise in shooting applications in the coming year, with the single-window system set to streamline approvals. "This is not just about films," Ms Gupta added. "With this new film policy, Delhi will no longer be known solely for politics or history, but also for its culture, creativity and cinematic locations." The International Film Festival will screen films and documentaries from India and abroad on varied themes, offering a platform for emerging talent and fostering global collaborations. City officials believe the initiative will also give a major push to tourism and hospitality in Delhi. Preparations for the festival are already underway, with industry watchers calling it a potential game-changer for Delhi's cultural and economic profile.
