SAHARANPUR: The body of a 35-year-old
Dalit labourer
was found hanging from a tree on Thursday in a field in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur.
Superintendent of Police (rural), Sagar Jain, said the deceased, identified as Rajesh, was a resident of Jarauda Jat village and worked as a
daily wage labourer
for a local farmer, reported news agency PTI.
Police teams, accompanied by a forensic unit and the deceased's family, arrived at the scene soon after receiving the alert. The body was then taken into custody and sent for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
"According to preliminary information, Rajesh had gone around 2 am to operate a tubewell in the fields where he was working," Jain said. "Later in the morning, villagers heading to their fields spotted his body hanging from a tree and immediately informed the police."
He also informed that Rajesh's family members allege that he was murdered and his body was hanged to make it look like a suicide.
Rajesh is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter, said the police.

Private hostel owner booked for harassing Dalit girl, roommate
Varanasi: A Dalit girl NEET aspirant from Jaunpur district, staying at a private hostel in Durgakund area under Bhelupur police station, was sexually harassed allegedly by the hostel owner. According to reports, he also attempted to target her roommate on Saturday. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bhelupur Gaurav Kaumar said that on receiving complaint from the girl's father, Bhelupur police lodged FIR against the accused hostel owner under sections of BNS, Pocso and SC/ST Act. Failing to target her, the hostel owner started harassing his daughter. The girl's father mentioned that the hostel owner's wife also hurled abuses at the daughter and her classmate and threatened to kill them. Bhelupur police said as the case registered in this connection also comprises sections of SC/ST Act, further action would be taken after detailed investigation by the ACP. Among the four Naxals who surrendered, Deepak alias Bhima Mandavi was a Divisional Area Committee Member (DVCM), while Kailash alias Bhima Bhogam and Ranita alias Payki worked as Area Committee Members (ACMs) of the Maoist organisation. Another Naxal was identified as Sujita alias Karam. Mandavi carried a reward of Rs 8 lakh while Bhogam and Payki carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh each, and Karam Rs 1 lakh on her head, the officer said. An SLR rifle and a single-shot gun were surrendered. The surrendered cadres said they were impressed by the police's rehabilitation drive and the state government's new surrender and rehabilitation policy, the officer said. SUV driver runs over several pedestrians, arrested
Lucknow: There was chaos and panic when a speeding SUV ran over a group of pedestrians in Telibagh area under PGI police station on Aug 17 night. The incident occurred near the Varadani Hanuman Mandir, where devotees had gathered for Janmashtami celebrations. The incident left three individuals critically injured and several others with minor injuries. The accident took place around 9 pm as worshippers were making their way to the temple.
