No world-class swimming pool in Hong Kong any time soon
A new swimming arena capable of hosting world-class competition was unlikely to be built in Hong Kong any time soon, sources have told the Post, with officials deciding there was no room for a pool near Kai Tak Sports Park. Sung Wong Toi Park, a thin strip of land sandwiched between two major roads in Kowloon, had reportedly been considered for the project, but was later deemed 'not big enough' for an Olympic-sized facility. A government source said while they could build something there 'for what we wish to have, we are not entirely sure we can fit everything – spectator stands and other facilities – in it'. The source added: 'We couldn't quite visualise it happening there for now; maybe we could try squeezing everything in, but there's no conclusion yet.' Hong Kong's leader John Lee Ka-chiu had mentioned the construction of a new pool in each of his past two policy addresses, after local swimming star Siobhan Haughey amassed four medals – two silver and two bronze – at the past two Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris. Siobhan Haughey adds second silver to Mare Nostrum medal haul, faces fight to retain title
Siobhan Haughey has won her second silver medal in as many days at the Mare Nostrum Swim Tour in Barcelona, coming second in the women's 200 metres freestyle final on Thursday. Advertisement The Hongkonger's time of one minute, 57.38 seconds was almost 1.5 seconds slower than her training partner Barbora Seemanova, who took gold in 1:55.85. Rounding off the podium was Portugal's Francisca Martins in 1:59.54. Haughey's time was her slowest in the 200m freestyle, an event for which she is the world champion, in almost three years. The 27-year-old also took part in the 50m freestyle, finishing fourth in 25.19, in a race won by Milou van Mijk in 24.56. The Dutch swimmer also bested Haughey in the 100m final on Wednesday, meaning the quadruple Olympic medallist has it all to do if she is to retain her Mare Nostrum crown. Swimmers at the three-leg series accumulate points based on the events they swim and their final position. For the past two years, Haughey has swept the 100m and 200m freestyle events at all three legs, en route to winning the overall title and the €7,000 (HK$62,000) prize. It is also the first time she has raced in two finals in one day since November.

Haughey medals again at Mediterranean swim tour
Haughey medals again at Mediterranean swim tour A second silver for Haughey in Barcelona confirms a stellar return to action for the four-time Olympic medallist. File photo: AFP Swimming sensation Siobhan Haughey continued to ramp up her form, with the Hong Kong star bagging two silver medals in the second leg of the 2025 Mare Nostrum Swim Tour in Barcelona. Haughey, 27, returned to competitive swimming in April after taking a four-month break to consider her future. She clocked a time of 1:57.38 to finish runner-up in the 200m freestyle on Thursday, adding to her 100m freestyle silver the day before at the Spanish city. Barbora Seemanova of the Czech Republic topped the 200m freestyle podium, with a time of 1:55.85. Portugal's Francisca Soares Martins rounded out the top three, touching home just over two seconds behind Haughey at 1:59.54. Haughey fell just short of a third medal in Barcelona, as she came back fourth in the 50m freestyle at 25.19 seconds. Nevertheless it marked a stellar few days for the four-time Olympic medalist - she landed two medals in the first leg of the tour in Monaco after winning both the 100m and 200m freestyle. Fellow SAR swimmer Ian Ho, meanwhile, withdrew from the men's 100m freestyle event in Barcelona. The third and final stop of the tour begins this Saturday in the French town of Canet-en-Roussillon.
