Cheung Ka-long ‘positive' on chasing Olympic three-peat in 2028 – but will manage body

Cheung Ka-long has given his clearest indication yet that he will attempt to become the first man to win three Olympic foil fencing golds in a row at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Advertisement Hong Kong's greatest Olympian, Cheung had previously voiced concerns over whether he could withstand four more years of training and competition. However, after claiming his fourth successive 'best of the best' honour at the Cathay 2024 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards on Thursday, Cheung told the Post he was managing his body with a view to extending his extraordinary Olympic supremacy. The world championships in Tbilisi, Georgia in July is the next major competition in the 27-year-old's diary. He said he would be 'trying to win and not just playing around', but had realised he needed to pace himself to get through another Olympic cycle. 'I have been quite tired for the past four years. I spoke to my coach [Greg Koenig] about it; I want to enjoy fencing and not push too hard. Hong Kong Sports Stars: golden Olympic duo Vivian Kong, Cheung Ka-long win top awards

Olympic champion Vivian Kong Man-wai was crowned women's 'best of the best' at the Cathay 2024 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards on Thursday, ending the three-year reign of fellow Paris Games star Siobhan Haughey. Advertisement There was no displacing Cheung Ka-long in the men's category, however, as the city's fencing king claimed the personal honour for a fourth straight year, in recognition of the successful defence of his Olympic foil title last summer. During a one-month voting period, judging panels, the media and the public selected five men's and five women's sports stars from 38 and 36 nominations respectively. Along with Kong, the women's honours went to Haughey, who earned 100 and 200 metres freestyle bronze in the French capital, table tennis' Doo Hoi-kem, the karateka Grace Lau Mo-sheung, and Ho Yuen-kei, a double Paralympics boccia gold medallist last year. Kong, 31, beat her fellow winners to the top prize during the ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, attended by Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Warner Cheuk Wing-hing and Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui. Olympic stars Siobhan Haughey, Cheung Ka-long lead Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards nominees

Hong Kong's Olympic heroes lead the nominations list for the Cathay 2024 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, which was released on Monday. Advertisement Swimmer Siobhan Haughey, who won the women's award three times in a row from 2021, became the city's first four-time Olympic medallist in Paris. Haughey won two bronze medals in the 100 and 200 metres freestyle in the French capital last summer, to go with the pair of silvers she won at the Tokyo Games in 2021. However, she will face a strong challenge from Vivian Kong Man-wai, who in Paris became the first female fencer to win gold for Hong Kong with her dramatic victory over hometown favourite Auriane Mallo in the final, where she recovered from a 1-7 deficit to win 13-12. Other nominees include cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing, table tennis starlet Doo Hoi-kem and rising tennis star Cody Wong Hong-yi.
