Dortmund winger Julien Duranville needs shoulder surgery after Club World Cup injury

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Borussia Dortmund's young winger Julien Duranville needs surgery on a shoulder injury picked up against Real Madrid at the Club World Cup, the club said Thursday.
The 19-year-old from Belgium was hurt in the latter stages of Dortmund's 3-2 loss to Madrid in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Dortmund said the surgery decision was made following an examination on Thursday and it isn't yet possible to predict how long he will be out.
Dortmund regards Duranville as one of its most promising young players but his progress has repeatedly hit injury setbacks since he joined the club as a 16-year-old in 2023.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said the injury was 'all the more bitter' because of the work Duranville and the club had done last season to improve his fitness. 'Nevertheless, we remain positive and optimistic because Julien is an outstanding talent,' he added.
Dortmund's opening game of the new season is just over a month away in the first round of the German Cup on Aug. 18.

Penn State's poll rankings point to college football parity
Without definitive explicit evidence, the US LBM coaches poll and preseason AP Poll have both revealed their thoughts on parity in college football. Penn State could certainly be at the center of this case study. After being considered a potential candidate for the no. 1 overall ranking in both polls, the voting systems and discussions surrounding how deep college football is this season may have altered their preseason perception. At least enough to anger fans and cause debate among analysts on whether or not the topic of parity has gained real momentum within the college football landscape. Consider the fact that the Nittany Lions were just two first-place votes behind the Texas Longhorns in the AP poll but still lost out to them because of the overall point system. While the Longhorns garnered 1,552 overall points, the Nittany Lions only had 1547 points, coming up just sort in a system that proves that there are so many votes that can go around to the best teams. In the coaches poll, at least the discrepancy was larger as first-ranked Texas garnered 28 first place votes to second-ranked Ohio State's 20, but the AP poll had the benefit of time on its side. This begs the question: would both polls have looked similar had they come out around the same time? Penn State's ranking certainly lends itself to more intrigue surrounding that question. After all, being perhaps the most experienced of the top 5 teams in both polls, would it not make more sense that given more time for decision-making, voters believed in them more for the AP poll over the coaches poll? Or is it just because the AP poll has more room for more votes, therefore inflating ANY team's chance of higher rankings and more votes? Penn State are not the only team that may have either benefitted or have been slighted once the AP poll came around. Consider the Big 12 where because of their highly spilt vote share, Arizona State found themselves outside of the top 10. Meanwhile, teams such as Michigan or South Carolina, who have a lot of faith from pundits, yet still have more questions than answers in their squad, have benefitted highly from the split committee, remaining squarely in the top 15. Overall, while many teams can make the case that parity will be the key to this college football season, Penn State's tenuous rankings tell the average fan a lot about how what many consider the best team in college football can both fall victim to and benefit from baffled voters. While fans may be displeased now, there may be a myriad number of chances for the Nittany Lions to prove themselves on the field. What these preseason poll rankings most importantly offer us is a chance for this college football season to be much more unpredictable than previously imagined.

Premier League chief calls for patience as Man City legal case drags on
LONDON (AP) — The Premier League's top official called for patience Wednesday while the seismic legal case involving Manchester City drags on into another season. City was charged by the league in February 2023 with more than 100 financial breaches, including providing misleading information about its sources of income. The case was heard by an independent commission between September and December last year but no verdict has been reached. Punishment could be as extreme as expulsion from the top flight. City has always denied the charges. The issue hangs over the start of another Premier League campaign, with the 2025-26 season starting Friday. But Richard Masters, the competition's chief executive, reiterated the league has no control or say over the timings. Asked in an interview with British broadcaster Sky Sports News why the league could not hurry the process along, Masters said: 'I can't answer that specific question. All I can tell you about is the system and how it works. 'I mean, it's an independent judiciary, essentially. So once the allegations, the charge, has been put forward, they go before an independent panel, which is independently selected, and they are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome, and we have no influence over that, over it or its timing. That's right from an independence point of view." 'I just have to wait,' he said, "and legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated, but we have to be patient.' Taking the Premier League abroad The Spanish league has recently approved a request for a match, between Villarreal and Barcelona, to be played in the United States in December and Masters was asked whether the Premier League had any similar desire to take a game abroad. Masters said the need has lessened. 'We did look at the '39th game' way back when, with lots of controversy. I recall that very clearly," Masters said of a controversial proposal made back in 2008 of having an extra round of matches played overseas. 'Our objective at the time, when thinking about it, was to help grow the Premier League around the world. 'And we've been able to do that through different means, through brilliant broadcast partnerships, through digital technology, investing in other areas, like the Summer Series tournament we've just had in the U.S., and now the Premier League is a genuinely global league. There are billions of people who will be tuning in over the course of the next next nine months to watch Premier League action. So we've achieved that objective by different means, that necessity has dissipated.'
