Arsenal players back Martin Odegaard as captain, Arteta says

LONDON (AP) — Mikel Arteta says he and his players have no doubts about Martin Odegaard's qualities as Arsenal captain.
The Norway international has been captain for three years — all second-place finishes in the Premier League — and that won't change as the Gunners prepare for their season opener at Manchester United on Sunday.
Club great Tony Adams had called for Arteta to give the armband to Declan Rice in a bid to elevate the team to its first top-flight title since 2004.
Arteta, himself a former Arsenal captain, said that's not happening.
'It's not just my opinion,' he said Friday, 'it's all the staff and especially the players. I asked them to vote (on) the captain and I got the results yesterday and by a mile — by 100 miles — everybody chooses the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have.
'It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win,' Arteta added. 'There's no question about that.'
Odegaard is also Norway's captain.

Keep digging
Three straight runner-up finishes won't deter the team, Arteta said.
'You keep digging, digging, digging,' he said. 'You have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. For three seasons we have more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. Now we have to do it in a season to earn one more point (than other teams)… that's our objective.'

Liverpool signs teenage Italian defender Giovanni Leoni

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool's offseason spending passed 300 million pounds ($400 million) after completing the signing of 18-year-old Parma defender Giovanni Leoni on Friday. The Italy Under-19 international was contracted for six years for 26 million pounds plus add-ons. He was to be at Anfield for the Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday night. Leoni previously played for Padova and Sampdoria. He joined Parma a year ago and impressed. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were the established center backs, and Leoni will vie with Joe Gomez to challenge them. 'Because it's one of the best clubs in the world it's not possible to say no to this club,' Leoni told 'I'm so honored. I was very happy (about Liverpool being interested). When I saw this I said, 'Wow, this is crazy.'' Liverpool also remained interested in Crystal Palace center back Marc Guehi, although discussions have stalled over a fee for a player in the final year of his contract. Despite signing eight new players, Liverpool has recouped almost 200 million pounds in sales following the departures of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Caoihmhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton and Nat Phillips.

Carlo Ancelotti's son wins his first Copa Libertadores match as Botafogo coach

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Davide Ancelotti, the son of Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, has won his first Copa Libertadores match as the new manager of defending champion Botafogo. The 35-year-old Ancelotti joined the Brazilian club in July for his first experience as a full-time coach. Botafogo beat Ecuador's Liga de Quito 1-0 at Nilton Santos Stadium in the first leg of a round-of-16 tie late Thursday. Striker Artur scored after 14 seconds. For official purposes, assistant Cláudio Cacapa signed the match-related documents as Botafogo's coach. Ancelotti did not have full authorization from CONMEBOL to fill that role for a bureaucratic reason, according to Botafogo. Last month, Ancelotti was contracted through 2026 after Botafogo owner John Textor fired Renato Paiva following the team's round-of-16 elimination at the Club World Cup. The Italian has worked for more than a decade alongside his father in different roles at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid. He is also part of Ancelotti's staff at Brazil. Botafogo is the Brazilian and Copa Libertadores titles holder. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP soccer:

Want to leave Man City? Guardiola tells Savinho and Ederson to ‘knock on my door'

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola said if Brazil internationals Savinho and Ederson want to leave Manchester City they should just come ask. The City manager addressed speculation about the players' future on Friday, a day before the team opens its Premier League campaign at Wolverhampton. 'If they want to leave they will come to me. I'm working with them because I am here. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door,' Guardiola. The 21-year-old Savinho joined City last summer on a $45 million transfer and signed a five-year contract but has been linked to Tottenham, which has seen Son Heung-min leave this offseason and James Maddison go down with an ACL tear. Savinho, a winger, scored three goals in 48 total appearances last season. 'I don't know,' Guardiola responded when asked if Savinho would stay. 'Tottenham in that case or any other club (that) wants a player should call the club, right?' Guardiola insisted that he hopes Savinho stays. 'I'm only concerned right now today that Savinho will be with us until the rest of the season and hopefully for many, many years because with 21 years old with the potential that he has … plays lots of minutes, he has to improve in the final decisions … but he's an extraordinary player,' Guardiola said. Still, Savinho won't travel with the team for the season opener because of an unspecified injury from last week's friendly in Sicily. 'Savinho is injured, sorry I didn't remember,' Guardiola said. 'He's injured from Palermo. Had a problem. A few weeks he will be out.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The 31-year-old Ederson has been Guardiola's first-choice goalkeeper since arriving from Benfica in 2017. He's helped City win six league titles, among other trophies. British press reports say Turkish club Galatasaray wants to sign him. 'Ederson didn't come to me and say 'I want to leave, I have an offer,' so all the players (who) are here are our players, and I work with them. What's going to happen (in the transfer window) nobody knows.' Guardiola added: 'In the end, as always, the desire of the players (is) above everything.' ___ AP soccer:
