🌎 The Club World Cup guide to...Borussia Dortmund
Our guide to all 32 clubs participating at the FIFA Club World Cup continues.
Today we're looking at...Borussia Dortmund.
How did they qualify for the Club World Cup?
Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup through UEFA's four-year ranking system, which evaluates club performances in European competitions from 2021 to 2024.

Their consistent showings, including a Champions League final appearance in 2024, placed them among Europe's top 12 clubs. Their qualification was confirmed when RB Leipzig failed to surpass them in the rankings after a Champions League exit in March 2024.
History at the Club World Cup

This tournament marks Dortmund's debut in the Club World Cup. However, they do have international pedigree, having won the Intercontinental Cup in 1997 - a predecessor to the Club World Cup - against Cruzeiro.
How did they perform in the 2024/25 season?
The arrival of Niko Kovač as coach saved Dortmund's season with the Schwarzgelben eventually finishing fourth in the Bundesliga. In the Champions League though, the German giants were bested by Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
Who is the coach?

Dortmund are managed by former Croatia international Niko Kovač, who signed a contract until June 2026. He replaced Nuri Şahin following a series of poor results earlier last season. Kovač brings experience from previous roles at Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg, and Monaco.
Who is their star player?
Striker Serhou Guirassy has been a standout performer for Dortmund. Since joining from Stuttgart in 2024, he has become Dortmund's all-time top scorer in a single Champions League campaign, netting 13 goals, including a hat-trick against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
Expected performance at the Club World Cup
Dortmund enter the Club World Cup as a strong contender, especially with Guirassy leading the attack. However, injuries to key players like defender Nico Schlotterbeck and veteran Emre Can, could derail their campaign.

Dortmund qualified for the tournament as last season's UEFA Champions League runners-up. While this marks their first appearance in the modern Club World Cup, the German outfit did win its predecessor, the Intercontinental Cup, back in 1997. Fluminense, on the other hand, secured their spot by winning the 2023 Copa Libertadores. Though not widely regarded as one of the strongest of the South American teams in this year's tournament, Renato Gaúcho's squad features seasoned veterans such as former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva and experienced goalkeeper Fábio, both of whom bring valuable big-match pedigree. Fluminense take on Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, June 17, at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. ET or 9 a.m. PT. That makes it a 5 p.m. BST start in the UK and an 2 a.m. AEST kickoff in Australia on Wednesday. Jobe Bellingham, younger brother of England and Real Madrid midfield star Jude, could make his first appearance for Dortmund today, following his $38million transfer from Sunderland. Savannah Bananas give Charlotte hotels a boost
Charlotte went bananas earlier this month when a wacky baseball team packed out Bank of America Stadium two nights in a row. The Savannah Bananas drew 148,000 people in Charlotte, a team record. Why it matters: Mecklenburg County hotels were near record capacity when the Bananas came to Charlotte, which is a win for Charlotte's visitor economy, according to Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) CEO Steve Bagwell. The big picture: Charlotte is on a roll with major sporting events, from last month's PGA Championship to hosting upcoming FIFA Club World Cup matches — all of which bring visitors and dollars to the city. Zoom in: While post-pandemic business travel was slow to recover, leisure travel in Uptown has boomed in recent years, bolstering center city's recovery. Major events like the 2023 Beyoncé concert have drawn thousands of visitors Uptown, where they patronize hotels, restaurants and bars. By the numbers: Mecklenburg County hotels had 81.5% occupancy for Friday, June 6, and 90% for Saturday, June 7, according to the CRVA. The average hotel rate was $146.17 for June 6 and $159.03 for June 7. A total of 52,547 rooms were booked over those two days. June 7 had slightly higher demand with 27,574 rooms. Between the lines: The Savannah Bananas weren't the only event in town that weekend (Taste of Charlotte was also going on), but the Bananas were definitely the main event.

Real Madrid appoint Pau Quesada as women's head coach
Real Madrid Feminino have appointed Pau Quesada as their new head coach on a two-year contract. Quesada, 32, joins Madrid from Torino, where he had been a member of the men's first team coaching staff since the summer of 2024. He previously worked at Madrid as a coach in the club's youth set-up between 2021 and 2023. The appointment marks his first coaching role in the women's game. Advertisement Quesada replaces Alberto Toril at Madrid, after the club announced at the end of May that his time in charge had come to an end. Toril, 51, led Madrid to three successive second-place finishes in Liga F and Champions League qualification in each of his four seasons in charge. Madrid reached the Champions League quarter-finals in 2022 and 2025 under Toril and beat Barcelona, the dominant force in Spanish women's football, for the first time in March. However, they still finished eight points behind Barca in Liga F. Madrid captain Olga Carmona announced she would be departing at the end of the season, and The Athletic reported she is set to join Paris Saint-Germain. Quesada's Torino exit comes after the club parted ways with head coach Paolo Vanoli in June, with Marco Baroni appointed his replacement. Madrid officially established a women's team in 2020 following the controversial 2019 takeover of local club Tacon. ()
