Kota Kinabalu: The Dalit Bay Nautica Carnival (DNBC) 2025 was launched at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here in an effort to promote more coastal potential in Sabah. It was officiated by Pantai Dalit Assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya, who said a sustainable and prosperous future driven by culture, commerce and connectivity is being built through the Dalit Bay Maritime Economic Development Plan 2026-2030.
Advertisement He said DBNC will not only redefine Tuaran's coastal potential but also position Sabah as a serious player in international nautical tourism. 'This initiative marks the beginning of a long-term transformation for Tuaran and beyond,' he said. DBNC Chairman cum The Genuine Brands Managing Director Prof Dr Jeffery Yap said the carnival is designed to bring visitors, economic activity and international exposure to Tuaran. He said it is not just an event but a movement to place Tuaran on the global coastal map. 'Through multi-stakeholder partnerships and ESG-based planning, we are elevating this region with authenticity, strategy, and long-term value,' he said. Jeffery said the three-day carnival, scheduled to run on July 25-27, is organised by The Genuine Brands in collaboration with Sail Malaysia. He said the event aims to bring in 29 yachts from 16 countries under the Tuaran Rally, alongside local highlights such as the Oyster Royale MasterChef Competition, the Sea Dragon Cup and a Meet and Greet with Unduk Ngadau and Mr Kaamatan 2025 winners. Sail Malaysia Managing Director Sazli Kamal Basha said the organisation brings over a decade of international sailing expertise. He said they are proud to serve as the official maritime partner of DBNC 2025. 'Through the Tuaran Rally and our international network, we are bringing yachts, exposure, and economic momentum to Sabah,' he said. Madius urges faster work on Tuaran road upgrade

He noted that the Works Ministry had previously informed that physical works were scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2025, but visible progress has yet to be seen. In a written reply, the ministry said the project, officially launched on 12 March 2024, aims to widen 2.7 kilometres of Jalan Berungis (Route 503) into a four-lane dual carriageway, build a U-turn flyover, and replace an existing culvert with a new bridge. As of June 30, physical progress stood at 2.06 per cent, slightly below the 3.18 per cent target, due to land acquisition delays affecting preliminary works such as utility relocation. Bond repayment planned since 2014, says Masidi
Published on: Wednesday, August 13, 2025 Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun ( pic ) has clarified that the repayment of the RM1 billion Sabah State Government bond in 2019 was the result of long-term planning dating back to 2014. In a statement on Wednesday, he said that Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's claim that the repayment was a major achievement of the Warisan administration in just one year was misleading. He explained that Bank Negara Malaysia had required the State Government to set up a dedicated Sinking Fund to ensure full repayment when the bond matured in 2019. The fund, he said, was created to avoid a heavy financial burden on the State Government at the time of repayment, regardless of which party was in power. Masidi detailed that contributions to the Sinking Fund were made progressively: RM2 million in 2016, RM200 million in 2017, RM400 million in 2018, and RM380 million in 2019, with RM18 million coming from investment returns. He said the suggestion that Warisan had to find RM600 million within months ignored the fact that the payment schedule had been set since 2014, with funds already allocated. During Warisan's administration, Masidi noted, the only payment presented was RM380 million, which would have been the responsibility of any government in office at the time. He also dismissed Shafie's claim that RM500 million from the bond was spent outside Sabah, calling it baseless and unsupported by evidence. Masidi said official records confirmed that RM544 million was used to repay the first state bond issued in 2009, with the remaining RM456 million funding state development programmes approved in the 2014 State Budget. Petronas to expand LNG exports to new Asian markets

(Reuters pic) Kuala Lumpur: Petroliam Nasional Bhd is seeking to expand its liquefied natural gas exports to growing Asian markets while also supporting Malaysia's rising energy needs, which are partly driven by a data-centre boom. The state-owned company's diversified portfolio – which includes a newly operational export plant in Canada – will enable it to meet overseas demand for gas, said Adif Zulkifli, chief executive officer of Petronas' gas and maritime business. The firm plans to expand beyond its traditional markets – Japan, China and South Korea – to countries in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and the Philippines, he said in an interview. But the gas-producing country is also eyeing more imports because its reserves are dwindling at a time when its energy requirements are growing thanks to a proliferation of power-hungry data centres serving the artificial intelligence industry. Malaysia imported about 3.3 million metric tonnes of LNG in 2024, up from 2.1 million tonnes in 2021, according to Bloomberg's vessel-tracking data. Petronas will continue exploration for more resources to sustain its domestic production, which has already peaked, Adif said. It operates one of the world's largest LNG terminals in Bintulu on the Sarawak coast and has enough gas to fill up its plant there 'for as long as we need', he added. 'We have brought in a number of upstream projects to make sure that we are able to deliver gas and sustain that for the next 20 to 30 years,' Adif said at the company's headquarters on the 42nd floor of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday. 'We are also gearing up to bring in more imports into Peninsular Malaysia.' Traditional gas suppliers in Asia are being forced to rethink their export strategies as they try to reconcile rapid economic growth with falling domestic reserves. Malaysia, which was the world's fifth-largest shipper of the super-chilled fuel last year, usually meets domestic demand by topping up with cargoes from Australia. Petronas CEO Muhammad Taufik said in June that Malaysia is set to be increasingly dependent on LNG imports in the next five years. In a bid to appease US President Donald Trump and secure a lower tariff from Washington in August, the Asian nation agreed that Petronas would buy US$3.4 billion of US LNG annually. Malaysia leaning into imports to support its energy needs highlights a broader trend of once hefty producers having to turn to buying the fuel from overseas.
