Bond repayment planned since 2014, says Masidi
Published on: Wed, Aug 13, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun ( pic ) has clarified that the repayment of the RM1 billion Sabah State Government bond in 2019 was the result of long-term planning dating back to 2014. In a statement on Wednesday, he said that Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's claim that the repayment was a major achievement of the Warisan administration in just one year was misleading. He explained that Bank Negara Malaysia had required the State Government to set up a dedicated Sinking Fund to ensure full repayment when the bond matured in 2019. The fund, he said, was created to avoid a heavy financial burden on the State Government at the time of repayment, regardless of which party was in power. Masidi detailed that contributions to the Sinking Fund were made progressively: RM2 million in 2016, RM200 million in 2017, RM400 million in 2018, and RM380 million in 2019, with RM18 million coming from investment returns. He said the suggestion that Warisan had to find RM600 million within months ignored the fact that the payment schedule had been set since 2014, with funds already allocated. During Warisan's administration, Masidi noted, the only payment presented was RM380 million, which would have been the responsibility of any government in office at the time. He also dismissed Shafie's claim that RM500 million from the bond was spent outside Sabah, calling it baseless and unsupported by evidence. Masidi said official records confirmed that RM544 million was used to repay the first state bond issued in 2009, with the remaining RM456 million funding state development programmes approved in the 2014 State Budget. Sept 8 hearing for Tuan Ibrahim's defamation suit against Rafizi
KUALA LUMPUR — The High Court here will hear the defamation suit filed by former environment and water minister Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (picture) against former economy minister Datuk Seri Mohd Rafizi Ramli over six days in September, beginning Sept 8. The suit, filed on Nov 17, 2022, relates to statements allegedly defamatory concerning the approval of several projects, including a flood mitigation project, awarded to a company. Lawyer Yusfarizal Yussoff, representing Tuan Ibrahim, said Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman has set Sept 8, 9, 10, 11, 29, and 30 for the trial. This was also confirmed by lawyer Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha, representing Mohd Rafizi. Neither of the two former ministers was present at today's proceedings, which were conducted in chambers. In his statement of claim, Tuan Ibrahim alleged that Rafizi made defamatory statements against him at two press conferences at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, which were streamed live on the defendant's YouTube account, on Jan 7 and 9, 2022. The statements allegedly implied that he was involved in approving a project worth RM2 billion for the Sungai Langat flood mitigation project, as well as a sewage treatment plant and sewerage pipe network projects in Kinta and Petaling Jaya, bringing the total value to more than RM2.3 billion. — BERNAMA

Tuan Ibrahim's defamation suit against Rafizi heads for full trial in September
KUALA LUMPUR: The defamation suit between Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli over the approval of a RM2 billion project will go to full trial next month. High Court judicial commissioner Avinder Singh Gill has fixed six days beginning Sept 8 to hear the former environment and water minister's lawsuit against Rafizi. The court fixed the date during case management today. Tuan Ibrahim filed the suit against former economy minister after the latter refused to apologise for his allegation that the former approved a project worth RM2 billion after Parliament was dissolved in 2022. Rafizi had, in a press conference, demanded an explanation from Pas deputy president regarding the status of the Sungai Langat 2 flood mitigation project worth RM2 billion which is allegedly in the process of getting approval. According to Rafizi, based on internal sources, the ministry was negotiating directly with a company, which could not be done by the interim government. Tuan Ibrahim, in a counter statement, said no approval could be given for any financial allocation during the interim government period. He maintained that he had never approved any allocation for any project following Parliament dissolution, and that no party had approached him to request the approval of the RM2 billion project. Tuan Ibrahim described Rafizi's allegations as malicious accusations with distortions of facts and fraud that were aimed at slandering and destroying his credibility ahead of the 15th General Election in 2022. It was reported that Rafizi had claimed that Tuan Ibrahim was in the process of approving a project worth RM2 billion ringgit for a company called Mangkubumi Sdn Bhd through direct negotiations for the Sungai Langat 2 flood mitigation plan. Rafizi also alleged that Tuan Ibrahim was involved in the awarding of projects under the Jana Wibawa Programme.

Malaysia raises Sept crude palm oil reference price, lifting duty to 10pct
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has raised its September crude palm oil reference price, a change that increases the export duty rate to 10 per cent, a circular on the Malaysian Palm Oil Board website showed on Wednesday. The world's second-largest palm exporter calculated a reference price of RM4,053.43 (US$962.12) per metric ton for September. The August reference price was RM3,864.12 a ton, and incurred a duty of 9 per cent. The export tax structure starts at 3 per cent for crude palm oil in a RM2,250 to RM2,400 per-ton range. The maximum tax rate is set at 10 per cent when prices exceed RM4,050 a ton.
