Daily Mirror28-07-2025
The bodies of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, have been found at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas, where they were hiking last Saturday with their young daughters
An urgent manhunt is underway after a couple were killed while hiking with their young daughters at a beauty spot. Police have launched a murder investigation following the deaths of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, who had two children aged seven and nine.

They family visited Devil's Den State Park, Arkansas, US, on Saturday. They were on a hiking trail when they were "attacked", with the bodies of the couple found and police alerted at around 2.40pm. The two children were not injured and are now safe with other family members.

The family had only recently moved to Prairie Grove from another state. Police are appealing for information from people who were at the park on Saturday and especially from those who may have footage while the area is cordoned off.

Arkansas police stated: "Investigators are asking those who visited the park on Saturday to check cellphone photos and videos or GoPro camera footage for images of the suspect.
"They are also asking residents of the area surrounding the park to notify ASP if they have access to security and game camera footage. The area of the park where the incident occurred remains cordoned off and secured by law enforcement. The park is located in a remote and rural area, where the terrain is rugged, vegetation is thick and there is no cellphone service."

Updated information has been released by the police of the suspect who is described as a white male with a medium build. He was seen driving to the park exit in a Mazda which had its licence plate covered.
Police said: "After receiving additional information, investigators now believe he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, with sleeves rolled up, rather than a tank top as originally reported.

"The suspect is an unknown white male with a medium build. He was wearing dark pants, a dark ballcap and sunglasses. The suspect had a black backpack and was wearing fingerless gloves. He was seen driving toward a park exit in a black, four-door sedan.
"The suspect's vehicle may be a Mazda with a license plate covered by electrical or duct tape. It may have been traveling on State Highway 170 or State Highway 220 near the park.
"Anyone with images of the suspect, information about the suspect or his whereabouts should contact ASP Troop L at (479) 751-6663. Investigators urge anyone with photos or video to not post footage on social media, as this may inadvertently jeopardize the investigation."
Shea Lewis, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism, issued a statement saying, 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Devil's Den State Park. Our hearts are with the victims' loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. The safety of our visitors and staff is our highest priority, and we are working closely with Arkansas State Police and various law enforcement officials as the investigation continues.
"We have increased law enforcement presence in our state parks. Our Park Rangers are fully commissioned law enforcement officers, and they are actively engaged in ensuring the safety and security of our park guests. We remain committed to supporting the ongoing investigation and to maintaining Arkansas State Parks as safe, welcoming places for all.'

Teacher charged with killing of hikers at Arkansas park pleads not guilty to murder

The teacher who authorities say admitted to fatally stabbing two hikers at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas last month pleaded not guilty Monday to murder charges. Andrew James McGann entered the plea during a brief hearing before a state judge at Washington County 's jail Monday morning. Circuit Judge Joanna Taylor scheduled McGann's next hearing for Nov. 14. He's being held without bond. McGann has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the July 26 killing of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. The two were hiking with their daughters — ages 7 and 9 years old — and the girls were not injured in the attack. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for the attack at Devil's Den, a 2,500-acre (1,000-hectare) state park about 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock. McGann was arrested on July 30 at a barbershop in Springdale, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of the park. McGann had not yet started his new job at Springdale Public Schools and had previously worked in Texas and Oklahoma. Authorities have said he did not have a prior criminal record. State Police have said McGann admitted to the killings shortly after his arrest and that investigators matched his DNA to blood found at the crime scene.

Teacher who admitted to killing couple on a hike with their kids in Arkansas to appear in court

A teacher who authorities say admitted to fatally stabbing a couple he didn't know who were hiking with two of their children in an Arkansas state park is expected to have his first court appearance Friday. Andrew James McGann, 28, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in the killing Saturday of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41. He is being held without bond and is expected to appear at the Washington County Detention Center. Arkansas State Police Col. Mike Hagar said authorities are trying to determine a motive for the attack at Devil's Den, a 2,500-acre (1,000-hectare) state park near West Fork, about 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock, the state capital. Its trails have been closed to the public since Saturday. State Police arrested McGann on Wednesday at a barbershop in Springdale, approximately 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of the park, said Maj. Stacie Rhoads, commander of the department's criminal investigation division. Washington County prosecutor Brandon Carter said he did not know if McGann has a lawyer or will need a public defender. The Associated Press has left messages at numbers listed for McGann, who has no criminal record. Officials said the husband was stabbed first, approximately half a mile (0.8 kilometers) into the park, then the mother ushered her children to safety before returning to help her husband. She was also stabbed to death. Authorities have not said if the girls — ages 7 and 9 — witnessed both their parents being killed. They were not hurt and are being cared for by family members, authorities said. McGann was cooperative during the arrest and admitted to killing the couple soon after, Rhoads said. Police also matched his DNA to blood found at the crime scene. The case is distressing even to the police. 'In my 27 years that I've been with the State Police, this is probably one of the most heinous that we've had, especially the aspect of just how random it was,' Rhoads said. Police flooded with tips McGann was arrested after a five-day search and hundreds of tips. The State Police collected photos and videos from other hikers who didn't witness the attack but were on the trails at around the same time. Police also released a composite sketch and a photo that showed a person of interest from behind. The police then narrowed down the suspect's vehicle, which had tape over the license plate, using surveillance footage from homes and businesses near Devil's Den. Within an hour of McGann being identified as a suspect, he was caught at the barber shop. Carter indicated the state would give a jury the option to sentence McGann to the death penalty. Suspect taught in other states before Arkansas job McGann has active teaching licenses in Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma, according to each respective government certification website. No infractions or suspensions are noted on his public state licensures in any of those states. The Associated Press has reached out to all three state education agencies. McGann was placed on administrative leave in spring 2023 while he was employed at Donald Elementary School in Flower Mound, Texas, 'following concerns related to classroom management, professional judgment, and student favoritism,' according to a spokesperson for the Lewisville Independent School District. Sierra Marcum, whose son was in McGann's fourth grade class, said the teacher came across as 'pretty cold' and 'disinterested in his students.' Marcum said her son had come home from school upset about some of McGann's behavior, which she reported to the school's principal. McGann resigned from the Lewisville posting in May 2023, the district said in a statement. He also taught at a small Oklahoma school district from the summer of 2024 until May this year. He resigned to take a job in another state, according to a statement from Sand Springs Public Schools, near Tulsa. The district said McGann passed all background checks. Law enforcement hasn't contacted Sand Springs Public Schools regarding the investigation, district spokesperson Lissa Chidester said. McGann had not yet started his new job in Arkansas at Springdale Public Schools, said Jared Cleveland, the district superintendent. He said the district could not provide more information, citing the investigation. The victims had just arrived in Arkansas The Brinks and their three daughters had recently moved from South Dakota to the small city of Prairie Grove in northwest Arkansas. Clinton Brink was supposed to start working as a milk delivery driver on Monday, according to Hiland Dairy, his employer. Cristen Brink had been licensed as a nurse in Montana and South Dakota before moving to Arkansas. The Brink family said the couple died 'heroes protecting their little girls.' ___ Riddle reported from Montgomery, Alabama. Associated Press reporter Hallie Golden in Seattle and Corey Williams in Detroit contributed.

We went out with London's ‘pickpocket hunter' to watch him sniff out thieves

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The first thing Londoner Diego Galdino thinks about every morning is pickpockets. When he goes to the toilet, makes a coffee or cracks on with his day job as a food delivery driver, his thoughts always turn to 'the next one he is going to catch'. That's because the 32-year-old is one of London's unknown heroes. In his own spare time he perches daily by lampposts, watching over the sea of tourists outside Buckingham Palace and in St James's Park ready to spring into action. Today, Diego has invited Metro to join him on pickpocket patrol. Dressed all in black and armed with a GoPro, stab vest and criminal detection spray, he claims to have caught nearly 20 pickpockets in the act. My shorthand pad and trainers look lackluster in comparison. 'Every day before I leave the house, I say a quick prayer and then get hunting,' he explains. 'The other day, I was thinking about the ones I have managed to stop, and I started to cry.' As we stand innocuously near the Blue Bridge in St James' Park, tourists milled around licking ice creams and marveling at the geese. We are chatting about how to spot thieves, when Diego springs into action. Visibly tensing up, he grabs his phone out of his pocket, and bellows 'ATTENTION! PICKPOCKET!' from across the crowds. Everyone turns to stare at two middle aged women who were hanging around a group of teenagers on school trip. Diego says he has seen the pair steal many times before. Unbothered by the crowds of people telling him to leave the women alone, the pickpocket hunter shouts and records them until they left the park. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video He said: 'I get tunnel vision after I spot them. I can't see or hear anything else. Everything else becomes lost to me.' Walking back over the bridge across a pond, the mood changes and Diego, who moved from the south of Brazil to London six years ago, is met with cries of 'hero' and given handshakes by people who stayed to watch the dramatic scene. 'I don't often get people coming up to say 'thank you', but it's nice,' he admits. Spotting pickpockets in dense crowds is a skill. I scan everyone walking past who might match Diego's descriptions, but in typical London fashion everyone merges into one. However, Diego is clearly an expert. Pointing at the mass of people waiting to watch the changing of the guard outside Buckingham Palace, he reveals one of the biggest tell tales is cheap shoes. He explains: 'I have absolutely crazy instincts now just based off what they are wearing. They usually have bucket hats or visors on, flashy but obviously fake designer sunglasses, and cheap shoes.' Pickpockets usually work in pairs, he adds, describing how they often walking erratically by stopping suddenly or randomly changing direction. They tend to target older groups of tourists. 'They know how to use London's alleyways and hidden passages to their advantage to make a quick and discreet getaway,' Diego explains. 'Now they have even started hiding their faces from me when they see me coming – but it makes it even easier to catch them.' He always offers footage of pickpockets to police and tries to flag officers down. The day before Metro went out with him, he managed to get one woman arrested. But often, they tell him to leave it to the professionals – despite theft rates soaring across the city. Diego's efforts come as the rates of theft in the capital shoot up by 712% in London. Between March 2023 and 2024, the Metropolitan Police received more than 79,000 reports of pickpockets. Some 28,155 were reported in Westminster, with one in seven people in the area having something – mainly mobile phones – stolen from them. This marks a 712% increase in the area from three years ago, and is by far the highest rate of thefts across the capital. Other areas are also seeing huge increases in reported incidents, including Kensington and Chelsea seeing a 426% rise on three years ago. Lambeth has also increased by 280%, the City of London by 266% and Greenwich by 245%. Being a pickpocket hunter is a fairly new thing for the delivery driver, who only began a few weeks ago. It all started when he came home from an evening gym session via Buckingham Palace, and saw a group of men and women behave weirdly around a young woman walking on her own. Diego cycled over and saw one of the group reach for the girl's bag – already feeling pumped from his workout, he knew he had to intervene. 'I got between the girl and the others and they began pushing at me, but eventually they ran off and left me and the girl alone. Afterwards I couldn't sleep at all, because I was so excited I was able to catch one,' he recalls. Since then, Diego has challenged at least 20 different thieves, many of whom return to the same spots despite police intervention. 'A lot of the time, they just run away from me. But I've been spat at, and hit on the back and pushed to the ground. But if I can help one person its worth it,' he says. However, despite his good intentions, police say it is best to report any suspicious behaviour to them. More Trending The Metropolitan Police said: 'We urge Londoners and tourists to stay alert in crowded places and report any suspicious behaviour or pickpockets to police. 'This summer the capital's town centres and high streets will see an enhanced police presence as part of our work to build on reductions in theft, robbery and antisocial behaviour. 'We'll be targeting hotspot areas with both plain and uniformed patrols, building on the progress we've already made with a 15.6 per cent reduction in theft from the person in the first six weeks of this financial year.'
