Should Cowboys' Dak Prescott Be A Running QB In 2025?
Should Cowboys' Dak Prescott Be A Running QB In 2025? originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Last season, just as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott attempted to return to being the dual-threat he once was, his hamstring gave out in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, ending his season.

For most, that puts a pin in Prescott being a genuine runner.
But not for everyone.
And let's be clear, when we talk about Prescott being a runner, we aren't talking designed runs, i.e., Lamar Jackson or Jayden Daniels, but more so when a play breaks down, Prescott can pick up a couple of useful yards to keep the chains moving.
ESPN's Mike Clay hasn't put a line through Prescott the runner either, as in his 2025 projections, Prescott finishes the year with 49 attempts for 198 yards and two touchdowns.

Say this comes to fruition, the 49 attempts would be Prescott's second-highest since 2019, and yes, the yards are down, but there is a little nugget here that might surprise some.

Going by Clay's projection, Prescott would average 4.4 yards per carry. That would be his joint-best return since 2021. It is also worth noting that while Prescott would ultimately see his season end due to a hamstring injury, he achieved his second-highest career rushing success rate (61.5%).
Now, we aren't advocating for Prescott, who will turn 32 years old before the season begins to morph back into the runner he once was, as physically, he might not have it in him.
But the ability to pick up crucial yards when plays break down has always been a key part of his offensive arsenal. It just might have to be used sparingly in 2025 under Brian Schottenheimer.
And if he can get four yards a clip? That'll do just fine.

Eagles Slot Cornerback Named NFL Best
Eagles Slot Cornerback Named NFL Best originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Through the first four weeks of the 2024 season, the Philadelphia Eagles fielded one of the worst pass defenses in the game. All that changed after the bye week. Advertisement While some analysts will point to a more buttoned-up unit under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, one player's arrival certainly changed the foundation of Philadelphia's defense. Cooper DeJean, the defensive back out of Iowa, missed most of training camp and the first month of the season due to a hamstring injury. The moment he arrived on the field in Philadelphia's 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 6 (the first game after their bye week), he quickly became an integral part of Philly's defense. A few months later, not only is DeJean a Super Bowl champion/hero, but the league has begun to recognize him as the best in the league at his position. Bill Barnwell of ESPN wrote a piece this week detailing DeJean's prowess in the slot and how no cornerback can match the kind of impact he had on Philadelphia. Advertisement "Yes, he's already there," Barnwell said. "DeJean spent the first month of his rookie season on the sideline, but after Philadelphia's Week 5 bye, his move into the starting lineup coincided with a massive defensive improvement. "After ranking 26th in expected points added (EPA) per play on defense before the bye, the Eagles were comfortably the league's best defense by the same metric afterward." Barnwell did add that DeJean will see more time this year on the outside in addition to his usual work in the slot. The departure of Darius Slay will force the Eagles to get creative in the back end of their defense. DeJean appears more than up to the task. Advertisement If he's anything like he was in the slot last season, Philadelphia's nickel corner may be one of the league's best and most versatile players. The 27-year-old Rutschman had an MRI on Saturday morning and the Orioles announced the move about 15 minutes before their game against the Yankees. 'Unfortunately, if he does, if this is a thing, he's going to go, but hopefully it's not too long.' Rutschman was in Baltimore's original lineup Friday as the designated hitter before feeling pain during batting practice and being scratched. The Orioles recalled Maverick Handley, who will serve as the backup to Gary Sánchez until Rutschman returns. Rutschman is hitting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 68 games this season. The top overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft is hitting .309 (17 for 55) in his last 15 games after hitting .182 (16 for 88) in his previous 25. Handley is 3 for 40 in 15 games with the Orioles this season. In 17 games with Triple-A Norfolk, Handley is hitting .322 with one home run and 5 RBIs. ___ More AP baseball:
