The Opposition in Bihar on Sunday questioned the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led government about the law and order situation in the state after a spate of murders in two days, The Hindu reported.
On Sunday, police said that a lawyer identified as Jitendra Kumar was allegedly shot dead in Patna city by unidentified assailants. He was at a roadside stall having tea when he was killed. The assailants fled the scene after shooting him.
Superintendent of Police Parichay Kumar told The Hindu that a sub-divisional officer, along with a forensic team, had visited the shooting site and collected evidence, adding that those accused of carrying out the murder would be arrested soon.
Jitendra Kumar's killing came a day after Surendra Kumar, a former president of the Bharatiya Janata Pary Kisan Morcha, and Waseem Anwar Khan, a local businessman, were shot dead on Saturday night, the newspaper reported.
The superintendent of police said that unidentified assailants had opened fire at the former BJP functionary when he was inspecting his field on Saturday in the Pipra police station limits in rural Patna district. He was taken to a hospital but died during treatment.
Khan was also shot dead by three unidentified assailants in Sitamarhi district around 9 pm, police said, adding that one person had been detained and a Special Investigation Team formed to look into the matter.
'Wasim Anwar Khan, alias Puttu Khan, was shot at by three unknown criminals,' Superintendent of Police Amit Ranjan told The Hindu, adding that the businessman had also died during treatment at a hospital.
Ranjan noted that the killing seemed to be related to land and money transactions as per the preliminary investigation, adding that Khan was involved in real estate.
Responding to the killings, the Congress asked whether anyone was safe in Bihar under the National Democratic Alliance government in the state.
'In the last 24 hours, a teacher, a businessman, a GNM nurse, a BJP farmer leader, and now a lawyer have been murdered in the state,' it said on X. 'In [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi-Nitish's goon rule, who is safe in Bihar?'
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Tejashwi Yadav asked 'if there was anyone in the NDA government willing to listen to the truth or admit their mistakes'.
Dipankar Bhattacharya, Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation general secretary, on Sunday said an atmosphere of peace and harmony was essential for business but 'crime, madness and anarchy' prevailed in society today, which was 'fatal' for traders, The Hindu reported.
Addressing a traders' conference in Patna, Bhattacharya said that there was a need for change in Bihar.
The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), a key ally of the NDA in the state, also criticised the state government for the spate of murders.
On Saturday, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief and Union Minister Chirag Paswan asked how many more Biharis will fall victim to the killings? 'It's beyond understanding what the responsibility of Bihar Police actually is,' Paswan said on X.
The spate of killings comes days after Gopal Khemka, a businessman linked to the BJP, was shot dead near his home in Patna on July 4. Khemka was shot dead in Patna's Gandhi Maidan area as he was stepping out of his car. He was allegedly shot at close range by assailants on a bike.

Gujarat: BJP MP Devusinh draws the ire of Brahmin community for calling rituals ‘misguided'; Congress joins chorus

AHMEDABAD: A viral video of Gujarat BJP MP Devusinh Chauhan's controversial remarks on religious rituals has ignited a political and social storm in Gujarat. The Kheda MP's speech drew sharp criticism from Brahmin Community leaders and the Congress, accusing him of undermining Sanatan Dharma and hurting religious sentiments. Facing backlash, Chauhan was later forced to issue a clarification in a video message. A political firestorm has erupted in Gujarat On Monday, after a video of Kheda BJP MP Devusinh Chauhan's speech during a religious function at kheda district's Bareja ,surfaced online. In the video, Chauhan claimed 'I realize that whether it is about the Gita or the Vedas... by talking about knowledge, devotion and karma……takes us somewhere in the other direction of "karmkand" or somewhere in another direction...." a remark that drew sharp condemnation across religious and political lines. The video, which quickly went viral on social media, was slammed as disrespectful to Sanatan Dharma, and Brahmin Community with many alleging that Chauhan had targeted the Brahmin community and reduced sacred texts to superstition. The Brahm Samaj was quick to react, expressing anger and accusing Chauhan of insulting the core tenets of Hindu faith. Congress didn't miss a beat, with its leaders launching a scathing attack on the BJP. Party spokesperson and Brahmin Community leader Hemang Rarval accused Chauhan of hypocrisy, stating, 'He got elected in the name of Sanatan Dharma but now calls Vedas and rituals misguided. Hindus voted for him he owes them an explanation.' Raval further emphasized that even Brahmin Community followers perform rituals like tarpan and puja, demanding that Chauhan acknowledge them as part of the broader Sanatan tradition. 'He's silencing voices that defend Sanatan Dharma,' Raval alleged.

Why Mamata's Martyrs' Day rally is key to TMC roadmap

On July 21 every year, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its chief Mamata Banerjee mark 'Shaheed Diwas' (Martyrs' Day), holding a mega rally in the heart of Kolkata, which outlines their roadmap for the coming months. This time, while addressing the Martyrs' Day rally Monday, Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister, has set the tone for the Assembly polls slated for early 2026. She accused the BJP of allegedly unleashing 'linguistic terrorism' against Bengalis, asserting that the fight for identity and language will continue till the BJP is defeated. 'There will be a language movement against the BJP's terrorism on the Bengali language… From July 27, the language movement will start in West Bengal in protest against attacks on Bengalis,' Banerjee thundered before a massive gathering at the rally venue in central Kolkata. 'We have to win more seats in the 2026 Assembly polls, and then march to Delhi to defeat the BJP,' the CM said. On July 21, 1993, the Bengal Youth Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee who was then with the Congress, organised a 'Writers' Abhijaan' (march to Writers' Building, a colonial building that was the seat of the state secretariat) with the demand to make voter ID cards mandatory for voting. The Congress raised this demand to put an end to the alleged rigging of polls by the then CPM-led Left Front government. Veteran TMC MP Saugata Roy, who participated in that 1993 march, recalled that thousands of Youth Congress workers gathered at five different points in Kolkata before starting the march towards Writers' Building. But Jyoti Basu, the CM at the time, had announced that he would not allow the Youth Congress workers to lay siege on the state secretariat – and the government imposed prohibitory orders to quell the demonstration. As one of the Youth Congress processions approached the Writers' Building from the Mayo Road area, the police stopped it and a scuffle broke out. A few of the protesters started throwing stones and the police responded with a baton charge. As the protest kept gaining momentum, the police, afraid they would be outnumbered, opened fire and killed 13 Youth Congress workers. 'Since July 21, 1994, the first anniversary of the deadly clash, Mamata Banerjee has held an annual rally in central Kolkata to commemorate the 13 young men killed on July 21, 1993. Since the formation of the Trinamool Congress on January 1, 1998, the July 21 rally has been the biggest day in the annual calendar of the party,' political scientist Sumantra Bose wrote in his book Transforming India: Challenges to the World's Largest Democracy. In her memoir, My Unforgettable Memories, Banerjee writes that 'all of us were bashed up black and blue'. 'I took most of the blows on my abdomen and around the waist. It was so bad that I had to go in for surgery and all through 1994–95 I used to ride in Bappan's Ambassador because I had to wear an orthopaedic belt,' she wrote. 'It is the day when we remember and offer our respect to the hundreds of people who are fighting death every day, whose lives are a living death, who have lost life and limb in this struggle. For us, it is a day of sorrow and shame. It is a day all of us come together so we started organising district conventions with Trinamool workers,' Banerjee added.

With Mr. Achuthanandan's condition worsening on Monday noon, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Health Minister Veena George, Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal, Law Minister P. Rajeeve, and scores of party workers, including Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener T.K. Ramakrishnan, CPI(M) Thiruvananthapuram district secretary V. Joy, reached the hospital. The Ministers and Mr. Jayathilak held talks with Mr. Achuthanandan's family members to finalise the arrangements. Hundreds of workers converged at the private hospital where Mr. Achuthanandan breathed his last. A living legend: Brinda Veteran CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat termed Mr. Achuthanandan a living legend, a history-maker, and a warrior. 'The beloved comrade was a warrior for the poor. He understood human suffering and worked for working class upliftment,' she told reporters in New Delhi.
