Multiple Waymo self-driving robotaxis were set on fire in Los Angeles during protests there. Other cars were also put to the torch but the Waymos have garnered special interest, partially because they're something new on the scene and partially because as electric vehicles, they raise different and specific concerns if their batteries burn.
Here's what we know and what experts worry about.
How many Waymos burned?
From social media and photos, it appears that at least five Waymo self-driving robotaxis were set on fire on Sunday, June 8 amidst immigration protests in downtown Los Angeles.
Protesters smashed windows on the cars – all Jaguar I-PACE electric SUVs – as well as spray painting them with anti-ICE and anti-Trump slogans. Some were also set on fire.
The burning cars, whose base sticker price is $73,000, according to Car and Driver, sent plumes of thick black smoke billowing into the blue Los Angeles sky, making for stunning photos that have figured prominently in many media feeds about the protests.
What's Waymo doing about the attacks on its cars?
Waymo has suspended service to the affected area of downtown Los Angeles.
A Waymo spokesperson told USA TODAY on Monday morning, June 9, the company has removed its vehicles from downtown Los Angeles and is currently not serving the area "out of an abundance of caution."
The spokesperson said the company is still operating in Los Angeles, which covers 500 square miles, and is working in coordination with the Los Angeles Police Department.
What other cities have Waymos?
Waymo are available for rides in Austin, Phoenix, Los Angeles, parts of Silicon Valley and all of San Francisco. They're expected to start in Atlanta, Miami and Washington in 2026. In April the company announced its first foreign venture, with testing beginning in Tokyo.
According to the company, more than 250,000 trips a week are taken in its driverless robotaxis.
Waymo is owned by Google's parent company, Alphabet.
Are people targeting Waymos specifically?
It's not clear if the Los Angeles protesters were specifically targeting Waymos or if the cars just happened to wander into the area and because they have no drivers, they were perceived as more vulnerable or they simply didn't know to drive away.
The Waymos that burned all appeared to be empty, meaning no passengers were potentially at risk.
There have been suggestions online that protesters might have called Waymos to the area specifically to set them on fire. However that would mean Waymo would know the name and contact info of the people who'd called them, making the scenario less likely though certainly not impossible. Waymo would not say how its cars came to be in the area.
There have also been suggestions that the Waymos were targeted because they are festooned with cameras, meaning they might be used to identify protesters engaging in illegal activity. However many modern cars are equipped with cameras, so Waymos aren't that different from most newer vehicles on the road.
In cities where Waymos are available, which include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and Phoenix, the cars are very much like human-driven taxis. They're a frequent sight as they drive around on their way to pick up passengers, or to park as they wait for their next ride request.
That means they're often wandering around on city streets, especially in popular and busy areas – like downtown Los Angeles. So it's quite possible the Waymos that were attacked were just going about their business and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
It's also true that Waymos are very conservative in their driving habits and won't drive threateningly if surrounded by people. So while a human driver might rev their motor or honk or drive aggressively to get out of a potentially dangerous situation, a Waymo would just calmly try to go on its way – making it an easy target.
What happens when an EV burns?
Electric vehicle fires can burn hotter and more intensely than gasoline-fueled cars, if their batteries catch fire. This can happen if they are crashed or if their batteries are infiltrated with saltwater, as can happen to cars nears the coast during hurricanes and flooding events.
If an electric vehicle's battery is damaged by a collision or water intrusion, a short circuit can occur, which causes the cell to discharge energy and heat up. This can lead to an event called 'thermal runaway,' in which the heat propagates from one cell to the next, causing them to burn.
Heat generated from a fire, thermal runaway of an adjacent cell, or shorting of the battery can melt the porous membrane between the battery's cathode and anode, causing this cell to go into thermal runaway. The heat causes the cell to vent flammable gas, which can ignite and catch fire, which can cause a chain reaction.
Is a burning car a health hazard?
There are important distinctions between electric vehicle (EV) fires and traditional gasoline-powered vehicle fires, both in terms of combustion characteristics and potential health hazards, said Dr. Alberto Caban-Martinez, deputy director of the Sylvester Firefighter Cancer Initiative at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
EV fires can release gases such as hydrogen fluoride, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and metal-based particulates.
'These emissions differ in composition from those generated by gasoline combustion, which primarily include carbon monoxide, benzene, and other hydrocarbons,' he said.
The health concerns from EV fires arise for anyone nearby, particularly bystanders downwind of the smoke plume who may inhale toxic combustion byproducts, Caban-Martinez said.
But firefighters are at special risk due to the frequency and intensity of their exposure to EV fires.
'Firefighters often work in close proximity to the fire, are involved in prolonged suppression and overhaul tasks, and may experience cumulative exposure over the course of their careers. Repeated exposures, even at low doses to hazardous substances released during EV fires can increase the risk of long-term health effects, including respiratory disease and cancer,' Caban-Martinez said.
Putting out a fire in an electric vehicle requires different techniques
If an electric vehicle's battery catches fire, different firefighting techniques can be required to quench it. Firefighters are trained on these techniques and the National Fire Protection Association offers emergency response guides to most alternative fuel vehicles.
Today most EVs are built with what are known as "cut loops" or "first responder loops" that allow firefighters and first responders to easily cut and disconnect the high-voltage system outside of the high voltage battery, to reduce the risk of electric shock and possible fire. Note: this can only be done safely by trained professionals with the appropriate tools and gear.
EV fires are more difficult to put out than ones in gasoline-powered cars and require different firefighting techniques, which firefighters are trained on.
The biggest difference is that an EV battery fire cannot be put out with the type of firefighting foam used to smother other fires. If an EV battery is on fire, it does not require oxygen to burn because it is self-sustaining, so the foam cannot stop the fire.
Instead, the battery must be cooled to stop the fire and end thermal runaway. One technique is to use special "pancake nozzles" that can slide underneath the vehicle to spray water on the bottom of the battery box, though these require large amounts of water.

Overall, the Quinnipiac poll found that 30% of self-identified voters surveyed in the U.S. hold a favorable opinion of Musk, according to polling from June 5 to June 9. Republican and Democratic voters remain deeply divided in their views of the world's richest man, who contributed nearly $300 million to propel President Donald Trump back to the White House. Only 3% of Democrats surveyed said they held a favorable of view of the Tesla CEO, who was once seen as an environmental leader appealing to liberal values. Musk didn't respond to a request for comment. Musk and Trump had a very public falling out last week that started with Musk's disapproval of the president's spending bill and escalated into an all-out war of words that played out on social media. Musk said on Wednesday that he regretted some of the posts he made about Trump last week, adding that "they went too far." Even with a slide in his favorability, Musk is still popular among Republicans after his time running the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an effort to dramatically slash the size of the federal government. Among the Republican respondents to the early June poll, 80% rated Musk and DOGE's work as either excellent or good, while 13% said it was either not so good or poor. Days after a fiery online feud seemed to signal an end to the relationship between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, the tech billionaire has backtracked. In a social media post early on Wednesday, Musk expressed regret for the very public feud, saying he went 'too far.' Musk also shared he thinks it was 'worth it' to have his net worth drop while he worked with the Trump administration on the Department of Government Efficiency. After becoming one of the leading voices of the MAGA movement before and after the 2024 election, the dispute between the president and Musk shocked their Republican supporters. While Trump has made a few comments about the fight on social media and to the press, including firing off a few warnings Musk's way, he's mostly sidestepped questions from reporters. Now, Musk seems ready to reconcile, but whether Trump is ready to repair the relationship is less clear. The relationship between Musk and Trump, and Trump and other tech industry titans, seemed to indicate the political maturation of Silicon Valley as they work to shape public policy to their benefit. But Musk's rise and fall is also a warning to those same titans, a clear example of the risks of engaging in the messy world of politics. Musk's posts come just days after the president told NBC News that the former DOGE leader was 'very disrespectful to the office of the president.' During their spat, Trump threatened that Musk's company SpaceX could face a termination of government contracts and potentially other retribution. It's unlikely that Trump will cancel SpaceX's contracts 'anytime soon,' Dan Grazier, a senior fellow at a national security think tank, told NPR. Musk in response threatened to decommission SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, but later walked it back. The feud began over Musk's displeasure with the Trump-backed 'big, beautiful bill,' which cleared the House last month. The bill would cut electric vehicle credits and could hurt his other company, Tesla. But John Helveston, a professor at George Washington University, told NPR the end of federal EV credits may not hurt Tesla as much as its competitors. Musk, a multibillionaire serial entrepreneur, spent much of the last several months positioned beside the president. His role in the Trump administration sparked concern among critics over what sway he had over Trump's decision-making, but hope among those who thought the duo could change the way Washington works. Peter Loge, a public affairs and political communications professor at George Washington University, said it may have seemed like Musk's influence on the president was 'higher and different' than other advisers, but, in reality, there's historical precedence. In the past, railroad titans, industrialists and shipping magnates have all sought to have power over government and its policymaking. Now, it's the tech sector, Loge said. 'It's a small collection of really rich people who get a lot of attention and who think they know best; they try to exert their force over public policy,' he told the Deseret News. Trump's inauguration ceremony was striking, as a string of powerful tech CEOs from Silicon Valley, including Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, and Musk, sat behind the president during his address. This growing influence comes at a time of significant change for the industry. 'A lot of these companies like crypto and AI are new to Washington and are new to trying to influence public policy. They could ignore Washington and do their own thing, and they discovered what Google, Microsoft and every other organization coming out of Silicon Valley discovered in the past decades, which is that you ignore Congress at your own peril,' Loge said. Pundits have also pointed to other tech giants who may step in to replace Musk, including venture capitalist Peter Thiel, who already has a relationship with Trump. Thiel has long been in Trump's orbit, endorsing his 2016 campaign and signaling the relationship between the tech world and Trump-era politics. There's a spiderwebbing impact that stems from Thiel, as Fortune highlighted in a report. Musk may now rely on his relationships in the tech world and with others in the administration, like Vice President JD Vance, to try to get back into Trump's favor. Meanwhile, the tech world will need to decide how far to lean into their political relationships. 'I'm heartened to see that we have, over the past two decades, seen a significant increase in terms of our political influence and engagement and we hope it continues to grow,' Ahmed Thomas, the CEO of the nonpartisan business association Silicon Valley Leadership Group, said. However, Thomas noted that going forward, he believes the tech industry should focus on emerging technologies, workforce development opportunities and be less dependent on the loudest voices in the room. 'I think for so many people, there's a focus not on opportunity, but rather where we have … more personalities and conflict,' he said. Regardless of whether Trump cuts out Musk entirely, or shifts his attention to another major tech player, Loge noted that Musk's dramatic rise and fall in the Trump administration is representative of a larger conversation about the relationship between wealth and political power. 'I think that, even as we wrestle with this new question, right, 'What about Elon Musk? What about crypto? What about AI?' It's important to remember that these are in many ways, very old questions about the connection between truth, persuasion, power and democracy,' Loge said.

The Santa Clara, California chipmaker is putting in $25 million, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing unannounced plans. The financing is part of the company's Series B funding round, which will value the company at around $4.5 billion and is led by a $100 million investment from Japan's SoftBank Group Corp. Internally, Samsung views its Skild investment as a way to keep visibility into the startup and its talent without needing to make a significant commitment. Robotics are quickly becoming a major area of future growth for the world's technology companies, with Apple Inc., Meta Platforms Inc., Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google all investing heavily in the space. Tesla Inc., meanwhile, has long been preparing to ship its Optimus robot. A few months ago, Samsung took a minority stake in Physical Intelligence, which also develops underlying robotics algorithms, with a small investment. The startup has already raised around $400 million and was last valued at about $2.4 billion. Nvidia has invested in companies like Figure AI and Serve Robotics. Samsung already sells robot vacuums, but its ambitions go deeper to include humanoid robots and other household appliances.
