Lima '25: Drone ban imposed for safety as Langkawi prepares for airshow

LANGKAWI: The use of drones without prior approval is strictly prohibited in and around the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25), which runs from today until May 24.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said that this restriction was essential to ensure the safety of the event's preparations and its smooth execution.
"CAAM strongly advises the public not to operate drones during Lima '25 in Langkawi," it said in a statement today.
The ban covers two periods: from May 14 to 19, during airshow rehearsals in the Alor Star area, and from May 20 to 24, when the official Lima '25 airshow takes place in Langkawi.
The restriction aims to prevent any potential incidents, particularly those that could jeopardise the safety and security of the public and various aircraft.
"Any aerial activity, including drone operations, that poses a threat to public safety or property will be subject to Section 4 of the Civil Aviation Act 1969 (Act 3)," the statement said.
"Such activities also breach Regulation 98 and Regulations 140–144 under the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, as well as Civil Aviation Directives (CADs)."
Meanwhile, activity has intensified at Langkawi International Airport in Padang Matsirat, as transport aircraft and aerobatic team jets began arriving in stages from noon today.
A check revealed the continuous landing of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) assets in preparation for the airshow segment of Lima '25, which officially begins on Tuesday.
Among the arrivals was the Sukhoi SU-30MKM, decorated in Jalur Gemilang livery and nicknamed 'Toruk Makto'. The aircraft, which had been conducting training at the Kepala Batas RMAF Air Base in Alor Star, touched down at the airport at around 2pm.
Six KT-1B Woong Bee aircraft from Indonesia's Jupiters aerobatic team were also spotted, along with the RMAF's F/A-18D Hornet, affectionately known among defence enthusiasts as 'Pikachu'.
An RMAF C-130 Hercules was seen landing and subsequently taking off again, believed to be transporting personnel and equipment in support of the Lima '25 defence showcase.
This year's Lima, the region's premier maritime and aerospace exhibition, will take place from May 20 to 24, with the aerospace segment hosted at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) and the maritime segment at Resorts World Langkawi.
This edition of Lima is jointly organised by the Defence Ministry and Global Exhibitions and Conferences Sdn Bhd (GEC), under the theme 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Progress'.

Navy officer honoured for heroic rescue at Teluk Batik

KUALA LUMPUR: While onlookers could only scream helplessly on the beach, Lieutenant Commander Mohd Firdaus Arbaain acted decisively, diving into the sea and swimming swiftly towards an overturned tourist boat to save lives, including two young children crying in fear. The incident, which occurred at Teluk Batik beach, Perak, in August 2023, was recalled with full reverence today as the Executive Officer of KD Sri Indera Sakti was the sole recipient of the Bintang Jasa Perkasa Persekutuan (JPP) at the Federal Awards, Medals and Honours Investiture Ceremony in conjunction with the Official Birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara here today. For Mohd Firdaus, 42, the award was not solely his, but a recognition of every hero and heroine of the nation who continue to serve the country and its people. "This is also a recognition for the Royal Malaysian Navy in particular, and the Armed Forces (MAF) in general. "I also dedicate this award to my family... when the incident happened, my wife and children were also at the scene," he told Bernama after the ceremony. Recalling the incident, Mohd Firdaus, who was then spending leisure time with his family, said he never expected that day would become a life-changing moment for many, including himself. While preparing to have a meal, he said his wife saw a boat carrying nine people almost capsizing, and in less than a minute, it overturned. He added that the screams of the passengers and the cries of children after the boat overturned spurred him into action, drawing on his ten years of experience as a member of the Naval Special Warfare Force (Paskal). "I mustered the courage to swim from the shore to the boat's location and handed over all the life jackets to the victims. I also helped to put life jackets on the two children of (Mohammad) Hafiz (Johari)," he said. In the incident, Mohammad Hafiz's wife, Nurul Afiqah Abdullah Sani, was found trapped under the overturned boat and died while receiving treatment at Manjung Hospital. His sibling and two children, along with four other individuals, survived. Mohd Firdaus said that although nearly two years had passed, the incident had left a profound impact on him. He said he got to meet up with the family last year when he was invited to be a guest on a podcast programme held in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, in conjunction with the Armed Forces Day celebration. "Only after the programme did he (Mohammad Hafiz) find out who had saved him and his family… I immediately went to meet him and his children in Parit Buntar. I also recently met them again in Langkawi during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA)… I brought them on a tour of the ship and the rest of the exhibition.

RMAF must transform to face future threats, says air force chief

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) must embrace transformation as a necessity to meet future challenges, said its chief, General Tan Sri Asghar Khan Goriman Khan. He said all members of the air force must be fully committed to implementing its strategic development plan, Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55). "Transformation is no longer an option but a necessity. "CAP55 is our strategic development plan that reflects our aspiration to build a lean, networked RMAF. It encompasses transformation across combat capabilities, logistics, training, intelligence, and future warfare systems. "I urge all members of the RMAF to carry out this plan with strong commitment and transparency. "Remember, CAP55 is not for me, but for the future generations who will safeguard our airspace," he said in a special address in conjunction with the RMAF's 67th anniversary today. Asghar also called for the strengthening of human capital development within the force, citing today's multi-faceted threat environment. "Today, we face multi-dimensional threats: cyber attacks, electronic warfare, autonomous drones, and hybrid conflicts. "Readiness is not just about weaponry, but also mindset. Investment in human capital development must be strengthened. "We need competent pilots, engineers, cyber operators, and leaders who are creative and forward-thinking," he said. Asghar said the RMAF's journey since June 1, 1958, had demonstrated its maturity as a credible and modern force. "This anniversary does not just represent our maturity as a key component of the Armed Forces, but also commemorates the spirit of struggle, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of our air force heroes. "Indeed, a lot has been achieved and we must continue to move forward with greater strength. "We are standing on the shoulders of giants who have paved the way for us. The transformation that we envision must be built on strong discipline, continuous training, dedication, and patriotism." Calling for the highest standards of conduct, Asghar also reminded personnel to uphold the principles of integrity and professionalism. "In realising our transformation goals, we must adhere to good governance, high integrity, and efficient resource management. "Safety must never be compromised. Avoid negligence, follow procedures, and ensure every operation, training, and administrative process is carried out professionally," he said. Asghar also added that a balanced work environment and support for families must be strengthened to enhance morale and performance.
