KUCHING (June 26): The Sarawak government will prioritise critical and technical courses under its Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) to meet the growing demands of industries in the state, said State Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
While acknowledging the importance of other academic fields, Sagah said the initial focus must be on areas crucial to the state's economic development.
'I cannot make the decision myself, but what I can say is that next year's FTES will only cover critical courses.
'This is because we are seriously considering the urgent needs of Sarawak's industries,' he said.
He was responding to a proposal by i-CATS University College Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emeritus Datuk Ts Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, during the institution's Gawai Celebration today, who had earlier called for the scheme to be expanded to include more disciplines.
Sagah said the state government hopes to see tangible results from the initial phase of the scheme, particularly in workforce development and income growth for Sarawak.
'If successful, the scheme may be expanded. Hopefully, as more students enter the workforce and help boost the state's income, we can eventually look at including more courses beyond just the critical ones,' he added.
Earlier in his speech, Mohamad Kadim proposed that FTES be extended to non-technical fields such as economics, business, hospitality, and tourism, arguing that these sectors also play a vital role in Sarawak's development.
He highlighted the hospitality industry's ongoing reliance on workers from outside Sarawak, stressing the need to develop more local talent for the sector.
He said by strengthening education in hospitality and tourism, there would be more opportunities for Sarawakians to fill the growing vacancies
The FTES, set to be implemented in 2026, will initially cover undergraduate programmes in STEM fields, law, medicine, accounting, finance, and psychology.
Participating institutions include Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS), and i-CATS University College. courses Free Tertiary Education Scheme FTES Roland Sagah technical

LINGGA (Aug 14): A two-day Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme has equipped 95 local residents, including farmers, retirees, homemakers, single mothers, and school leavers, with practical skills aimed at boosting their livelihoods and income. Organised by the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) in collaboration with Sarawak Skills, the short-term courses were funded through MEITD's special grant and brought directly to the community. Participants received hands-on training in four courses: Basic Hydroponic Cultivation using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT); Basic Bread, Bun and Pastry Making; Basic Electrical Wiring; and Jewellery Making (Ceramics). Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, who officiated at the closing ceremony, said the initiative reflects the state's commitment under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to create a skilled and competitive workforce and achieve high-income status by 2030. 'We are not just teaching skills. We are building confidence, inspiring entrepreneurship, and creating pathways to better livelihoods. Whether it leads to a small business or simply the joy of learning, every skill gained today is an opportunity for tomorrow,' he said in a statement released by the organisers. The programme also supports Sarawak's target for 20 per cent of Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) graduates to pursue TVET education. Combined with soft skills training, these courses are designed to help participants remain competitive in a fast-changing job market. For many, the courses marked a turning point. Some participants intend to cultivate hydroponic vegetables, others plan to start home-based bakeries, while some are keen to create handcrafted jewellery. The event concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony and a lucky draw, with participants expressing optimism about applying their newly acquired skills. Engagement session for basic MHIT product yet to be finalised

KUALA LUMPUR: Engagement sessions with key stakeholders for the development of the Medical and Health Insurance and Takaful (MHIT) basic product are currently still ongoing, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the structure and design of the product have yet to be finalised. He added that the basic product concept is targeted for full completion by December 2025, with implementation planned for the end of 2026. "Engagement sessions with key stakeholders are actively being conducted to ensure that all feedback regarding the design features of the MHIT basic product is considered and aligned with the principles of affordability and long-term sustainability. "However, it is important to emphasise that the decision to purchase this basic product is entirely voluntary and based on individual choice," he said in a written parliamentary reply. He was responding to Datuk Dr Alias Razak (PN–Kuala Nerus) on the status of the study on withdrawals from Account 2 of the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) to finance health insurance premiums and the likelihood of it being implemented in the near future. Commenting further, Anwar said once the MHIT basic product policy is finalised, the EPF is prepared to consider enhancements to the i-Lindung facility to allow the use of Account 2 for the future purchase of the product. "As with other insurance and takaful products, policyholders can expect to pay for the MHIT basic premiums from any financial resources they have. "The use of funds from Account 2 under the EPF scheme is merely one of the proposed financing options currently available to consumers for purchasing insurance and takaful protection," he said. In June, it was reported that the government was c onsidering allowing EPF members to use their Account 2 savings to pay for monthly health insurance premiums. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said if implemented, 16 million EPF contributors could gain access to private hospital treatments using their contributions.
