Carr, who seemingly held a slight lead early in the process, is considered the better option after backing up Leonard last season, while Kenny Minchey has been with the program for the previous three seasons, and is regarded as a dual-threat option that could bolster the team's rushing efforts. Both are inexperienced, and the fact that Freeman's next media availability isn't scheduled till August 26, this provides Texas A&M coach Mike Elko, who is the team's new defensive play caller, a stark advantage when preparing to face Notre Dame's passing game, already knowing that star running back Jeremiyah Love with be Elko's primary focus. 2026 3-star OT reaffirms his commitment to Texas A&M
Texas A&M's 2026 recruiting class, like the 2025 signing class, features several offensive line commits, including three-star offensive tackle Avery Morcho, who, despite his recruiting ranking, possesses the size, strength, and athleticism to become a long-term starter at left or right tackle. This weekend, Morcho, who attended an award ceremony at the Houston Touchdown Club, was interviewed by local sportscaster Joe Gleason about his commitment to the Aggies ahead of playing with a talented Ridge Point football team during his 2025 senior season. Morcho represents coach Mike Elko and O-line coach Adam Cushing's focus on the Missouri City, Texas recruiting landscape, as sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman, who also hails from the area, has been the rising offensive star this preseason. Morcho's maturity and readiness to take on his development track under Cushing led to him reaffirming his commitment to the program, which he expressed to Gleason on Saturday night. "At Texas A&M, it's just my relationship with coach (Adam) Cushing and coach (Mike) Elko, and it's really family filled up there in College Station," Morcho stated. "I really had to ask myself if I really wanted to be challenged, and go into a conference that good, and I was like, yeah, I want to push myself and get out of my comfort zone." Morcho also stated that he intends to study business and engineering at Texas A&M, knowing that whenever his football career ends, he'll have a backup career waiting for him. Standing at 6'6" and nearly 300 pounds, Morcho is on track to become an elite pass protector, while his run blocking ability is already established. SMU coach calls ESPN rankings system 'rigged' after latest Football Power Index update
SMU head football coach Rhett Lashlee is doubling down on his belief that ESPN favorites certain conferences with their rankings. ESPN released its first Football Power Index rankings in June. The Mustangs came out as No. 20 among college football teams entering the 2025 season, though ACC teams like Miami (No. 9) and Clemson (No. 11) were higher on the list. The Football Power Index is a "measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season." Now, ESPN updated those rankings on Friday, and the Mustangs, coming off a surprise College Football Playoff trip after going 11-3 last season, only moved up one spot to No. 19. Miami and Clemson, though, took a tumble to No. 17 and No. 16 respectively. This led Lashlee to call ESPN's ranking system a farce. "Because the whole thing is rigged," he wrote on X. Lashlee was also vocal during last season, where he questioned his belief that the ACC and the Big 12 were disrespected compared to the Big Ten and the SEC, calling the latter "top-heavy." "There's other leagues that claim depth," Lashlee said, per the New York Post. "The SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964. Same six. Not a single one has been different since 1964. That's top-heavy to me. That's not depth." Lashlee clearly doesn't just believe in his Mustangs to have more success heading into 2025, but he wants some more respect for the schools he'll be going up against. Clemson, led by veteran head coach Dabo Swinney, was the school that beat SMU during the 2024 ACC Championship, 34-31, though Lashlee's group was the favorite in the tilt at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lashlee's quest to lead his Mustangs to more success in 2025 begins with their first game against East Texas A&M on Aug. 30.
