Could Bills Have James Cook Replacement Already On Roster?
Could Bills Have James Cook Replacement Already On Roster? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills' offseason has been positive, but one thing has stopped it from being one of the best, and that is the contract saga of James Cook. Advertisement Wanting a new contract at roughly $15 million APY, there has yet to be any significant movement on the deal, and some think it might be coming next offseason. But the good thing, if you want to look at it like that, is the Bills have a couple of backs, who, if Cook holds out, might be able to carry the load - Ty Johnson and Ray Davis. And offensive coordinator Joe Brady has liked what he's seen from second-year back Davis this offseason. "Ray just being having the offseason to go through it has been really good and really unique," Brady said. "You can see him just kind of taking another step to his game, both in the run game and the pass game, which makes life exciting for me.' Buffalo Bills running back Ray Davis sneaks into the end zone for a touchdown during first half action during the Buffalo Bills divisional game against the Baltimore Ravens at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Jan. 19, 2025.© Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Davis posted 442 yards and three touchdowns in his rookie season, along with 189 receiving yards and three touchdowns, as he showed his ability as a receiver. Advertisement So the talent is there, and Davis didn't start a single game in 2024, but did play all 17 in the regular season. Now with Cook's future uncertain, Davis might get a few more reps at training camp, depending on whether James participates or not. If you are a critic of Cook and maybe a fan of Davis ... you have reason to wonder if the latter player might be the next man up to the job - without a $15 million asking price. But for now? Those "few more reps'' could prove invaluable for a player entering his second season, looking to make a leap and earn more reps under Brady, both as a runner and receiver. Advertisement Could he be the heir to Cook? While it is a little outlandish, the NFL is a never-say-never league. James Cook's Bills RB Room Given Top-10 Ranking
James Cook's Bills RB Room Given Top-10 Ranking originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Is the development of James Cook and the arrival of Ray Davis enough to make the Buffalo Bills' running back room one of the best in the league? Advertisement According to Pro Football Focus, the answer is a resounding yes. PFF's Dalton Wasserman placed Buffalo's running back unit eighth overall in his 2025 NFL running back unit rankings. "Buffalo has put together a solid group of running backs who fill a variety of roles," Wasserman said. "The workhorse is James Cook, who earned an outstanding 88.6 PFF rushing grade last season while leading the league in rushing touchdowns. "Rookie Ray Davis got 120 carries of his own and earned a solid 73.1 PFF rushing grade while breaking 30 tackles. Ty Johnson serves as a reliable pass catcher, ranking 10th among qualifiers in PFF receiving grade in 2024." Advertisement Plenty of teams around the league employ a "by-committee" approach to their running backs. Buffalo's ability to do so - while still somehow showcasing Cook - shows the organization's depth. Cook - under contract but involved in a contract dispute - is running as the lead back in 2025. He led the league in rushing touchdowns last season to go along with his second straight 1,000-yard season. Davis and Johnson are nowhere near as talented as Cook, but each adds a skill set that can bolster Buffalo's offense. The organization may not have a top player like Saquon Barkley or Christian McCaffrey, but their trio can be just as devastating to opposing defenses. Advertisement It's why PFF is so high on Buffalo's running back room. Buffalo Bills ranked NFL's best offense entering 2025 season
The Buffalo Bills offense is like a favorite rerun. Familiar, reliable and always worth watching. Buffalo returns with the same stars, the same system, and expectations of the same explosive success in 2025. Advertisement The Bills earned the No. 1 spot in preseason rankings of the league's top 10 offenses, lauded for their rare continuity and high ceiling. The offense begins with reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen and carries through the coaching staff, led by offensive coordinator Joe Brady and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. After setting multiple franchise records last season, Buffalo brings back 15 of its top 16 offensive contributors by snap count. The offensive line remains fully intact after allowing just 14 sacks in 2024, the fewest in the NFL for the second year in a row. The Bills lost wide receivers Mack Hollins (signed with the Patriots) and Amari Cooper (remains unsigned), but revamped with Josh Palmer and Elijah Moore. They also re-signed running back Ty Johnson and fullback Reggie Gilliam to maintain depth and versatility. Allen may not have the NFL's biggest arsenal of weapons, but he remains the league's most dangerous one. Advertisement "The 6-foot-5, 237-pound signal-caller has the ability to operate as a one-man army, making NFL men look like boys in his midst," wrote. "This is a well-oiled machine poised to consistently light up scoreboards once again this fall." expects a jump in production from second-year wide receiver Keon Coleman and third-year tight end Dalton Kincaid. In 2024, Buffalo scored a franchise-record 525 points and 65 total touchdowns, including a team-high 32 rushing touchdowns. The Bills averaged 30.9 points per game, second only to the Detroit Lions, and tied an NFL record by scoring at least 30 points in eight consecutive games. top 10 offenses for 2025 Buffalo Bills Tampa Bay Buccaneers Baltimore Ravens Washington Commanders Detroit Lions Denver Broncos Philadelphia Eagles Green Bay Packers Cincinnati Bengals Kansas City Chiefs This article originally appeared on Rochester Democrat and Chronicle: Buffalo Bills projected to lead NFL in scoring in 2025
