Baylor steals game one from Sun Devils
WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — A furious seventh-inning rally lifted the Bears to a crucial series opening win over Arizona State, taking game one 7-4 on Friday night.
Baylor's defense showed out early on, helping Mason Green to a stellar outing on the mound with no hits allowed through four innings pitched, highlighted by a home-run robbery by Ty Johnson in the third.
The Bears struck first with Wesley Jordan driving in Tyriq Kemp with a RBI double down the left-field line to give Baylor a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
The Sun Devils responded in the sixth, taking a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
However, the Bears confidence didn't waver on their home field, responding with a six-run frame to take the lead back for good.
Baylor will try for a series win against Arizona State on Saturday, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m.

UCLA gets off to fast start, holds off upstart Murray State 6-4 in College World Series opener
Associated Press OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Roman Martin and AJ Salgado drove in two runs apiece to lead UCLA to a 6-4 victory over a Murray State team making its College World Series debut Saturday. The Bruins, in the CWS for the first time since they won the championship in 2013, built a 6-0 lead before the Racers began chipping away at it in the middle innings. UCLA closer Easton Hawk pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the Bruins' fourth straight win in an Omaha opener. UCLA (48-16) will play Monday night against the winner of Saturday night's game between No. 3 national seed Arkansas and No. 6 LSU. The Missouri Valley Conference's Racers (44-16), only the fourth No. 4 regional seed since 1999 to advance to the CWS, will try to keep their first appearance going when they play Arkansas or LSU in an elimination game on Monday. Ian May (8-3), the second of five relievers who followed starter Michael Barnett, pitched an inning to earn the win. The Bruins were in full control early and improved to 27-1 when scoring first. They loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning against Nic Schutte (8-5). He gave up a hit and issued three walks before he settled down and got back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to keep it 1-0. Dean West singled in another run in the second, and the Bruins added four more in the fourth on a safety squeeze bunt, base hit and Salgado's two-run double. Murray State ended the UCLA pitching staff's streak of 20 2/3 scoreless innings when a sliding Jonathan Hogart beat Salgado's throw to the plate on Carson Garner's drive into right field in the fifth. Before that, the Bruins hadn't allowed a run since the second inning of their super regional opener against UTSA. The Racers added a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth after putting runners on second and third with no outs. Consecutive RBI groundouts pulled them within 6-4. Hawk went to the mound in the ninth with a two-run lead and facing the heart of the Racers' order. He struck out Dustin Mercer, got Garner to ground out and fanned Dominic Decker to earn his eighth save. ___ AP college sports: recommended in this topic

AJ Salgado helps lift UCLA over Murray State in Men's College World Series opener
OMAHA, Neb. — UCLA's return to the Men's College World Series started with three hours of sweaty palms in 86-degree heat and high humidity. An early lead shrunk across four innings on a muggy afternoon. Only when closer Easton Hawk struck out Murray State's Dominic Decker on a full count for the final out could the Bruins exhale. They walked off Charles Schwab Field for the first time in 12 years with a 6-4 win Saturday. The Bruins jumped ahead early but couldn't build momentum. They loaded the bases on their first three batters but only scored after Roman Martin drew a four-pitch walk. Dean West ripped an RBI single to right field in the second. Then he got thrown out trying to get back to first after rounding the bag. In the third, Murray State left fielder Dustin Mercer made an athletic catch on the warning track to rob the Bruins of a two-run hit. Payton Brennan singled to give the Bruins runners on the corners with two outs in the third only to be spoiled by an athletic over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track by Murray State left fielder Dustin Mercer. Finally, UCLA broke through in the fourth with four runs. Martin and Roch Cholowsky each drove in runs before AJ Salgado's two-run double to right field. The Bruins' first multi-run inning gave them a 6-0 lead. That was enough behind a gritty start from junior Michael Barnett. The righty scattered three hits and four walks across 4 2/3 innings. The bullpen conceded three more runs and escaped to secure the win. UCLA will play the winner of Saturday's evening contest between Louisiana State and Arkansas on Monday.

Arm soreness couldn't keep North Central's Tristan Wilson from making one last start
MOORESVILLE – A recent MRI of North Central senior pitcher Tristan Wilson's arm revealed swelling and fluid in his elbow and a strain of the radial nerve in his shoulder. Every pitch sent shooting pain through his arm, but the right-handed starter took the mound for Saturday's Class 4A semistate semifinal against Evansville North anyway. Wilson fought through warmups, but after two pitches that failed to top 70 mph, coach Andy McClain pulled Wilson from the game. "You've known these guys for so long. You just want to give it your best and contribute somehow. I just felt like I owed it to them," Wilson said. "It meant everything," Wilson's brother, senior catcher Tanner added. "Obviously, we'd love for him to go. He's our guy. He's been a pitcher on this team for four years on varsity. I feel like when he's out there he gives us the best shot to win." Evansville North scored three runs off reliever Jack Carr in the first, providing more than enough run support for starter Conner Watson, sending the Huskies to a 6-0 win. Evansville North advances to face the winner of Franklin vs. Center Grove. Carson Conley hit a three-run home run. Mason Renfro and Aiden Vaught added RBI singles. "He has been fighting arm soreness all season," McClain said of Wilson. "He just goes out, guts it out and gives us as much as he can. ... Coach (Andrew) Dutkanych said his arm is really bothering him. We're going to go out and see what it feels like, but he just couldn't do it. "I feel bad for him because he's been a bulldog and gutted it out all year when his arm has been sore. ... He could've said, 'I'm going to play in college. I don't want to hurt my arm.' But the entire season he won some big games for us by gutting it out." Evansville North scored all six of its runs in the first three innings. Shortstop Jackson Dinnsen took the mound with two outs in the third. Dinnsen allowed an inherited runner to score before forcing a fly out to end the inning. Dinnsen used a lively slider to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard. The sophomore finished with six strikeouts over 4⅓ scoreless innings. Dinnsen's strong outing was only topped by Watson's. Watson faced the minimum through 6⅔ innings. The senior took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Watson finished with seven strikeouts over seven scoreless innings.
