John Wall announces retirement from the NBA after 11 seasons, will join Amazon Prime Video as an analyst
Washington Wizards superstar John Wall is calling it a career. Wall announced his retirement from the NBA on Tuesday in a video thanking his fans, family and teammates for their support during his 11 years as a player. Wall said he's leaving the game with no regrets, saying, "I gave this game everything I had." Near the end of his retirement video, Wall mentioned that basketball will always be part of his life, and mentioned that "new opportunities" led him to take on the next chapter of his life. On Wednesday, NBA on Prime announced that Hall would join the team as an analyst. Amazon Prime Video will broadcast NBA games every Friday night, with additional weekly national games on the platform on Thursday and Saturday starting midseason. Wall rose to prominence as a high schooler, receiving an invite to the Reebok All-American Camp as a sophomore. He continued to show out during high school and entered college as one of the top-ranked players in the country. That ranking turned out to be accurate. Wall spent just one season at the University of Kentucky before going pro. He entered the 2010 NBA Draft, where the Wizards made him the No. 1 overall pick. He more than lived up to that promise early in his career. Wall averaged 16.4 points as a rookie, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year award voting. He put up similar production in each of his next two seasons before taking a step forward in his fourth year. Wall averaged 19.3 points and 8.8 assists during the 2013-14 NBA season, earning his first All-Star appearance. It was his first of five straight appearances in the All-Star Game. Wall also earned recognition for his defense during the 2014-15 season, making second-team All-Defense. He notched a seventh-place finish in the MVP voting during the 2016-17 season after averaging a career-high 23.1 points and 10.7 assists. He was off to a similarly strong start during the 2018-19 season before injuries struck. Wall was limited to just 32 games that season. During the offseason, Wall fell at home, rupturing his Achilles. He missed the entire 2019-20 NBA season recovering. He returned to action with the Houston Rockets in 2020-21, and still produced strong numbers before again missing time due to injuries. The Rockets, intent on developing younger players, reached an agreement with Wall in which the veteran would not play for the team. Both sides eventually settled on a buyout, but Wall did not play the entire year. Wall signed with the Los Angeles Clippers ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season. He averaged 11.4 points in 34 games before he was traded back to the Rockets and waived three days later. Prior to his injuries, Wall was one of the league's premier players. He had incredible speed and court vision and looked capable of carrying the Wizards to great things. But injuries cut his prime short and — eventually — sapped Wall's effectiveness.

Thunder will face Nuggets in first NBC's 'Sunday Night Basketball' broadcast
As the NBA has released its entire 2025-26 regular season schedule, that gives folks plenty of time to dissect and put it back together. It's the driest part of the calendar year. The next two months will see little action as teams prepare to start their training camps. The Oklahoma City Thunder will enter as a popular title favorite. Fresh off one of the greatest seasons ever, they're running it back with mostly the same roster. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren were all gifted contract extensions this summer to keep them together for the long haul. Next season will also mark the return of NBC as a broadcast partner. The NBA left TNT to return to the familiar company. The Thunder will be part of its first game as they will kick off the year on Opening Night with a pregame ceremony to unveil their banner and hand out rings against the Houston Rockets. To kick off the new NBA on NBC era, the channel will start a "Sunday Night Basketball" tradition after the Super Bowl. Similar to "Sunday Night Football," the primetime games will be treated with prestige. While the weekly Sunday night games won't start until after Super Bowl LX, NBC will debut it during the NFL's bye week before the championship game. The Thunder will be part of the broadcast's double-header when they travel to face the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, Feb. 1. It's a good matchup to bet on if you're the NBA schedule-makers and NBC suits. The Thunder and Nuggets always guarantee classics. They had arguably the most entertaining playoff series this past year with a full seven-game slate headlined by Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic. As the Thunder start their championship reign, the NBA has gone all out to advertise them. They're tied for the most national television games in the 2025-26 regular season. The league fully trusts the small-market team to bring in numbers. Don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Kasparas Jakučionis explains why he'll wear No. 25 with the Heat
Rookie Kasparas Jakučionis will begin his career with the Miami Heat by wearing a new jersey number after arriving as the 20th overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. Jakučionis wore No. 32 last season as a freshman at Illinois and No. 23 for two seasons with Barcelona. He has also donned No. 7 while representing Lithuania multiple times, most recently in the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket Championship. With No. 7 currently occupied by Kel'el Ware and Nos. 23 (Michael Jordan) and 32 (Shaquille O'Neal) retired by the Heat, Jakučionis opted to wear No. 25. He chose it for a few reasons, but most notably, because of his sister, Kornelija. "(I chose it) because the draft class is 25," Jakučionis said. "Then also, I was wearing No. 7 before, so two plus five is seven, and also I was wearing 32, and 32 minus seven is 25. My sister's favorite number is 25, and her birthday is the 25th day." Jakučionis was named to the All-Big Ten third team last season, averaging 15 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists on 44% shooting from 3-point range in 33 games. He led the team in scoring, tying the freshman record for total points in a season (494). The 19-year-old logged six appearances with the Heat in summer league, averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 31.8% shooting from the field. He dropped 24 points, four rebounds and four assists on July 11. Jakučionis is highly touted thanks to his ability to score at all three levels, playmaking, vision and passing. The team was encouraged by his first run and is eager to see him take the court when training camp begins next month.
