Ya Biladi16-05-2025
The annual congress of French Travel Companies (EDV) is being hosted in Agadir-Taghazout from May 15-18, 2025. This strategic choice by Morocco's National Tourism Office (ONMT) aims to strengthen relationships between tourism professionals from both countries.
Over three days, more than 400 French decision-makers—including travel agencies, tour operators, transporters, and hoteliers—will gather to discuss the future of tourism, share industry trends, and develop market perspectives for 2025-2026.
A professional workshop scheduled for Friday, May 16, will facilitate direct meetings between Moroccan operators, hoteliers, receptive agencies, institutions, and French decision-makers to foster commercial partnerships and develop new products.
«Hosting this congress in the Agadir region demonstrates our commitment to bringing Moroccan and French tourism ecosystems closer together. It creates concrete opportunities for synergies and positions Morocco as a priority for French travel advisors», said Achraf Fayda, Director General of ONMT.

Morocco's Potato Exports Make Strong Comeback After Five-Year Decline

Rabat — Morocco has dramatically revived its potato exports during the 2024-2025 season after five years of steady decline, according to EastFruit website. The North African country shipped 42,900 tons of consumer potatoes worth $14.9 million between July 2024 and May 2025. This volume marks a 5.7-fold increase compared to the previous season and represents 1.5 times more than the 2022-2023 campaign. The recovery stems from renewed trade with West African countries and sustained European demand. Morocco's potato export industry hit rock bottom in 2023-2024, when the country shipped only 7,400 tons. This dramatic drop caused Morocco to fall from 28th to 67th place among global potato exporters. The decline began after the country's peak export year of 2018-2019, when the country shipped nearly 100,000 tons. Year after year, export volumes shrank as Morocco lost market share to competitors. Export embargo shaped recent performance Moroccan authorities imposed an embargo on exports to West Africa from February 2023 to July 2024. Officials designed this policy to protect the domestic market, stabilize local prices, and prevent shortages during periods of low production. During the embargo, Morocco concentrated its limited exports on European markets. The government later replaced the embargo with a quota system, allowing trade with West African partners to resume. West Africa drives the recovery Mauritania and Mali have become Morocco's top export destinations again, accounting for nearly half of all shipped volumes in 2024-2025. These countries prefer regional suppliers over distant sources due to global supply chain uncertainties. Spain remains a key European market, with shipments showing strong growth. France, Portugal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal also posted significant increases. However, exports to the Netherlands, Burkina Faso, and Niger dropped sharply. Seasonal export pattern continues Morocco's potato exports follow a distinct seasonal pattern. The country ships most potatoes during two peak periods: July to September and February to April. This timing aligns with the country's harvest seasons and international market demand. Challenges remain despite recovery While the 2024-2025 recovery shows Morocco's ability to regain market share, the industry faces ongoing challenges. Weather conditions, water availability, and trading partners' commercial policies all affect export performance. The 2023 embargo revealed how regulatory decisions can impact Moroccan producers. Climate factors and irrigation access continue to influence production levels and export capacity. Tags: MoroccoMorocco's potato exportsPotatoPotato export

French Tourists Stranded After 5-Star Hotel Overbooking in Morocco

Several French tourists arrived in Morocco expecting a luxury escape, only to discover that their hotel had no rooms available. According to the French media outlet Le Parisien, the incident affected dozens of travelers over the past two weeks. Dylan, a 21-year-old student, traveled with his parents and his partner to Taghazout. They had booked a stay at the White Beach, a five-star-adults-only hotel promising Atlantic-view pools and 'ultra all-inclusive' service. Each paid around 1,000 euros. Upon arrival on July 31, the group waited for a bus to take them to the hotel. They soon overheard a heated discussion between another traveler and an agency representative. When they asked for an explanation, they were told the hotel had overbooked. The representative suggested the Palais des Roses in Agadir as an alternative, assuring them that the only difference was the presence of children and that the hotel had recently been renovated. Dylan quickly realized that 20 to 30 travelers faced the same fate that day, while around 50 had experienced it the week before. Faced with the risk of losing their bookings during the tourist season, most accepted the transfer. Dylan described the Palais des Roses as 'family-oriented, noisy, damp, under renovation, without a private beach.' Attempts to reach the agency in France failed. 'Lies and manipulation' The White Beach later explained that it had only allocated ten rooms per week to Ôvoyages, a travel agency, over the past two weeks. Samia Guenaoui Benslimane, director of Ôvoyages, told Le Parisien, 'We have proof that these rooms were paid in advance. The hotel told us their system malfunctioned and overbooking occurred. I do not know if this information is true or false.' After a tense confrontation, the travelers remained at the Palais des Roses. The agency initially promised a refund and later proposed a move to the four-star Riu, but the offer disappeared. Dylan shared his experience on LinkedIn, describing the situation as 'lies, manipulation, and attempts to make us sign documents giving up our right to reimbursement.' Guenaoui Benslimae insisted that solutions had been found for other travelers and said she wants to reach 'an amicable resolution' for the remaining guests. According to Le Parisien, while no formal complaint has been filed, some travelers remain dissatisfied. Tags: French touristsMoroccooverbookingTourism
