Variety's International Achievement in Film Honoree Tarak Ben Ammar Soars With Italy's Eagle Pictures Pacts and Local Hits Like ‘Boy With Pink Trousers'

Tarak Ben Ammar's long-standing film industry ties are rooted in Italy, where his Eagle Pictures is currently the top independent film distributor and a growing production force.
The Franco-Tunisian film and TV entrepreneur spent part of his teens in Rome during the 1960s when his father was the Tunisian ambassador to Italy. 'It was thanks to those years that I fell in love with cinema,' he says, reminiscing about the Eternal City's Cinema Archimede theater.

After building the Tunisian film business from nothing, and spending decades forging relationships and making deals with some of the top names in the global entertainment business, Ben Ammar returned to Italy. In October 2007, Ben Ammar bought indie distributor Eagle Pictures, which had gone belly up. It was then that he said to himself, 'OK, I'll learn how to be a distributor.' He recalls that he had previously only dabbled in distribution, most notably when Quinta took French rights to Mel Gibson's blockbuster 'The Passion of the Christ' in 2004.
'One of his biggest assets — compared to the company's previous management — is that he's very international; he knows everybody,' says Eagle's head of acquisitions and co-productions Maria Grazia Vairo, who was already with the shingle when Ben Ammar bought it from an Italian bank and other entities.
Since then, Eagle has become Ben Ammar's flagship film business outfit. It co-owns France's Studios de Paris, home of 'Emily in Paris.' Eagle is also a shareholder along with Warner Bros. Pictures in Spyglass Media Group, which acquired the Weinstein Co.'s film and TV library in a bankruptcy sale alongside Andy Mitchell's Lantern Asset Management. Eagle Pictures now boasts a library of some 2,800 titles.
As a distributor, Ben Ammar has taken Eagle to the next level through two key steps. First, in 2020, he inked a deal with Paramount Pictures' then-CEO Jim Gianopulos, 'who really understood that we could be a good partner,' becoming Paramount's Italian theatrical distributor. Then, in 2023, Eagle signed a similar deal with Sony. But with them, 'I took it a step further,' he says, becoming a production partner with Sony on high-profile titles including Antoine Fuqua's 'The Equalizer 3,' starring Denzel Washington. That film was shot in Italy, tapping into the country's generous tax rebate.
'The fact that we've partnered with Eagle for a major market like Italy says so much because Sony generally prefers to have our own team up and running,' says Steven O'Dell, Sony president of internationalttheatrical distribution. 'When it comes to major markets, Italy is the only market that we're confident enough in a partnership to release independently and not through our own office.'
In the past year, Eagle has released such high-profile pics as multiple Oscar nominee 'Conclave,' while it has blockbuster 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' kicking off a busy summer with such U.S. pics as 'Karate Kid Legends' and '28 Years Later.'
The Italian banner has pacts with such indie distributors as MadRiver, DeAPlaneta (Spain), IDC Distribution (Latin America), Italia Film (Middle East), Leonine Studios (Germany and Austria), Shochiku (Japan), SND (France) and Unicorn Media (Eastern Europe).
More recently, Eagle has been ramping up local productions.Last year at Cannes, it bought Italian remake rights to French smash hit 'A Little Something Extra.'
Eagle scored Italy's biggest local hit of 2024 with Margherita Ferri's teen drama 'The Boy With Pink Trousers,' about a 15-year-old who took his own life after enduring bullying at school and online. In terms of ticket sales, it's even beat Hollywood heavyweights such as 'Wicked,' 'Dune 2,' 'Gladiator 2' and 'Venom 3.'
Samuele Carrino stars alongside Claudia Pandolfi, who has since become an advocate for anti-bullying initiatives.
Eagle initially released the movie Nov. 7, 2024, on 380 screens and increased to 550 screens the following week after receiving calls from enthused exhibitors. 'We quickly realized something special was happening and we increased our release plans. We've had it on as many screens as 'Gladiator 2,' Ben Ammar told Variety in December 2024.
The true tale has grossed more than $10 million and 'made a statement that we're in business to make good Italian movies that also move the needle socially, culturally, emotionally,' says Ben Ammar, using words that evoke Rossellini's spirit.

Italy's ‘Ultra Fast' Hyperloop Train Reaches Major Milestone

One of Italy's most ambitious transportation projects is set to begin testing after passing its feasibility study. The Hyper Transfer hyperloop project, on which research first began in 2013, will commence construction work on a test track in Veneto, spanning 10 kilometers (about six miles) between Padua and Venice. The hyperloop project is designed to transport passengers and cargo at record speeds of up to 1,200 kilometers per hour, thanks to the use of magnetic levitation through vacuums. The vacuum means there is no air resistance on the front of the vehicle, allowing transport tubes to move at very high speeds. The technology has been tested in various parts of the world, including India, but the construction of a test site in Italy would be a major breakthrough for the concept in Europe. The hyperloop project has completed its feasibility study phase, with Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region, announcing that the test track would be built in his area. Zaia told the Transportation Logistics Fair in Munich this week: "It is not a futuristic vision but a concrete project born in Veneto...A revolutionary technology, strongly desired by the Veneto Region, which is now entering its operational phase." A consortium of four companies is managing the project: HyperloopTT, a Los Angeles-based technology provider and designer; Webuild, Italy's largest engineering contractor; Leonardo, a multinational aerospace and defense monitor; and Hyperloop Italia, the body that licenses the infrastructure. The test track will occupy a 10-kilometer stretch of land. It will be designed to carry both passengers and cargo, allowing the loop's safety systems and energy management technology to be properly tested. HyperloopTT CEO Andrés de Leónsaid in a statement to Newsweek: "This is the moment HyperloopTT has been working towards since 2013. We thank the Italian government, the Veneto region, and CAV for their vision and commitment to sustainable innovation. "We've partnered with some of the best engineering and transportation companies in the world, all with deep roots in the region. We look forward to bringing this first of many hyperloop systems to the world." HyperloopTT COO Andrea La Mendola said: "Italy has always been a cradle of creativity, innovation, and progress, from the artistic brilliance of the Renaissance to the engineering prowess behind their high-speed trains. Today, we stand at the dawn of a new era, poised to redefine mobility once again with the 'Hyper Transfer' project. "This hyperloop system is not just about connecting Venice and Padua in record time; it is a testament to Italy's unwavering spirit of innovation and their commitment to sustainable and efficient transport." The testing process is expected to take several years, although engineers hope that parts of the infrastructure will be operational by 2030. Something Bold Is Coming From Alfa Romeo: New Stelvio Coming?

Alfa Romeo, like Maserati, isn't in a good place right now. The Stellantis-led marque is in dire need of a turnaround plan with the world's fifth-largest automaker confirming that a major strategy review is in the pipeline for the Italian marques, spearheaded by a new CEO. Wasting no time putting that plan into action, Alfa Romeo has announced a big reveal is set to take place on June 10, 2025, at 4:30 PM CEST (10:30 AM EDT) with the following post shared on it social media accounts: "A new chapter is about to begin. Bold, unexpected, unmistakably Alfa Romeo." So, what is the premium Italian brand cooking? It's no secret that Alfa Romeo is working on the next-generation Stelvio, its best-selling model. Despite being hit by an issue concerning the switch to a hybrid powertrain, the timing's just right. The eight-year-old Stelvio is aging, and the automaker needs to entice fans with a new model. The next-gen Stelvio will use Stellantis' STLA Large platform, which underpins the unpopular Dodge Charger Daytona EV – an architecture flexible enough to cater to both pure EV and hybrid setups. The switch from the previous all-electric powertrain plan to hybrid isn't as easy as flicking a switch, though. That said, we don't expect any powertrain details if this is indeed the new Stelvio, only a look at its new design, which was recently shared via the following patent images. But if it's not a new model, then what else could the teaser be referring to? As you can see in the single teaser provided, the imagery shows the Alfa Romeo badge with a glowing red equilateral triangle. Alfanatics will recognize the triangle from Autodelta, Alfa Romeo's historic racing division. Could Alfa Romeo be about to announce a return to motorsport? Or could it be ready to launch a performance model that harkens to classic Alfas that Autodelta worked on. Whatever Alfa Romeo's planning, we only have a couple of days to find out. So stay tuned. Man Thrifts Coffee Table From Facebook Marketplace—Then Learns Its Value

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A man scored a designer coffee table worth up to $8,250 for just $120 on Facebook Marketplace, and the internet is obsessed. Tyler Wallis (u/tlrwlls), 33, from Fayetteville, Arkansas, is an avid thrifter who spends his spare time browsing flea markets, thrift stores, and online resale platforms. On April 22, his efforts paid off when he stumbled across what he described as the "conversation piece" of his dreams—a unique glass flower-shaped coffee table. "I had been wanting to replace my current coffee table I had for a while but hadn't seen anything I liked yet, so I was beyond excited when I scrolled past it," Wallis told Newsweek. "I would call my decor style 'curated-eclectic with a slight mid-century modern influence,' so the unique flower shape of the table top instantly attracted me. I always joke that every piece should be a conversation piece, and that's exactly what this table is!" The post of his interesting new piece taking center stage above a cow-print rug in his living room garnered 11,000 upvotes in the subreddit "Thrift Store Hauls." Wallis, who works as a restaurant server while studying to become a registered dietitian, said his passion for interior decorating began early. He explained he had always been interested in decorating and grew up going thrifting with his older brother on the weekends. These days, he visits local thrift stores once or twice a week and rotates through flea markets every couple of weeks. He estimated that about 85 percent of his home decor is secondhand. The table was listed for $120 and located about 45 minutes from his home. Though he typically tries not to spend over $100 on any one item, Wallis sent the listing to six friends to get their opinion. The verdict? Everyone agreed he needed to get it. There was only one photo in the listing, so Wallis did a reverse image search to get a better look—and what he found shocked him. The table, it turned out, was designed by Italian furniture company Cattelan Italia in the 1990s and was listed on auction sites for between $2,250 and $8,250. "That's when I realized that was a find of a lifetime and instantly sealed the deal for me," he said. He messaged the sellers straight away to ask for measurements and arranged to pick it up that day. The only hitch? Wallis drives a compact Chevrolet Spark and wasn't sure the table would fit. After some careful measuring, he decided to take the risk and make the 45-minute drive. Tyler Wallis's living room featuring his bargain designer coffee table. While the hatchback opening proved too small, they managed to fit the table through the back passenger door vertically. Back home, Wallis wasted no time swapping it in for his old coffee table. "It's the perfect addition and brightens up the room with its reflective surface," he said. "This table has absolutely become my new personality and I don't think I'll ever stop talking about it to anyone willing to listen," Wallis said. Despite its potential resale value, he added: "Regardless of how much it's worth, I don't see myself ever getting rid of it or trying to flip it for a higher profit. To me, thrifting is about finding exciting deals, not turning a profit." Reddit users were quick to celebrate his lucky find. "The thrift gods were watching over u today!" one user wrote. "This is one where I am very glad someone else can take it home to appreciate. My chaos family could never," another joked, alluding to the table's fragile design. "I've heard that the best way of taking care of your glass coffee table is to leave it on your front lawn and send me your home address," quipped one commenter. "Love how it is slightly playful, but still posh and doesn't really cross over into 'whimsical,'" said another. "Damn good deal. Love the vibe of the room!" a final commenter added.
