NRLW: Two sent off as Warriors Women crash to upset defeat
Warriors second-rower Matekino Gray leaves the field after getting a red card for a dangerous tackle. Photo: © Bruce Lim / Two red cards by the Warriors have handed the Canberra Raiders a 20-16 victory in Hamilton, their first of the season. Matekino Gray and Tysha Ikenasio were ordered from the field within minutes of each other in the first half in an unprecedented scene, with Gray committing a spear tackle on Raiders prop Chloe Saunders. Ikenasio then followed her for an early shower after a dangerous hip drop tackle on Monalisa Soliola. However, an impressive fightback saw them in contention, before some good game management by the Raiders saw the visitors close out the result. By the time Gray and Ikenasio were sent off, the Raiders were already well in charge with a 12-0 lead, thanks to tries to Jordyn Preston and Sereana Naitokatoka. MacKenzie Wiki then extended the lead with a try shortly after and it looked like the now-11 player Warriors were in for a long night at the rain-soaked FMG Stadium Waikato. To their credit, the Warriors mounted a spirited comeback. Payton Takimoana and Lavinia Tauhalaliku hit back either side of halftime to close the gap, but the very stretched defence couldn't stop Raiders fullback Elise Simpson from scoring a crucial try to make it 20-8. Takimoana then completed a hat trick as the Warriors finished the much stronger team on attack, but some wayward goal kicking meant they didn't quite have enough to draw level. Raiders skipper Zahara Temara's experience saw them control the final stages well to earn their first win of the season. The result sees the Warriors remain in sixth place on the ladder, they return to Hamilton next weekend to play the fourth-placed Sharks. Read how the game unfolded here:
