'Our son was injured in rugby, but he had cancer'

BBC News8 hours ago
"Harrison has soldiered on. He is a warrior, a real champion. I'm so proud," says dad Mitchell of his son, who has been diagnosed with cancer. The 13-year-old, from Leicester, first complained of back pain after he was injured while playing rugby at school in December last year - but, as time went on, it got worse and he was forced to give up playing football for his team, Thurmaston Magpies, in February. His family were told the following month that he had multiple tumours - in his spine, spleen, stomach, liver, lung and kidneys.Harrison's parents are now planning an event to raise money to pay for future treatment for their son, as well as to support other children with cancer.
When Harrison's pain worsened, his mum Lindzey, 34, says the family "instinctively knew there was something possibly seriously wrong".During initial visits to A&E, the family say they were told the teenager might be suffering from growing pains or something muscular. But Lindzey says that "didn't fit with what we were seeing with Harrison" and so, in March, they insisted he was admitted to hospital for tests.A subsequent MRI scan confirmed Harrison had cancer. The family say they were initially told he had germ cell cancer, but his dad, Mitchell, 36, says they have now been told it is likely to be another rare form of the disease.Investigations are continuing to determine what type of cancer Harrison has and his prognosis is currently unknown.
Harrison has undergone four rounds of chemotherapy, which Mitchell says has stabilised the tumours."We are hoping the latest one is a lot stronger and will shrink his tumours," he adds."But we know there are no certainties."Harrison says he has had "some really good days off chemotherapy and then some really bad days", adding: "Food can taste strange and some drinks feel fizzy when they are really not."The Leicester City season ticketholder is being supported through his treatment by his two younger brothers, aged nine and 11.And in April, Harrison received a visit from his favourite Leicester City player, Kasey McAteer, who stopped by the family home to wish him well with his treatment.Harrison says: "He gave me some boots he signed. They are really nice."What a lovely present. It made my day."
Mitchell says the family has been "overwhelmed with support from the local community".They will hold a community fun day at Birstall United FC on 30 August - the proceeds of which the family say will be used to support Harrison, while some of the money raised will be used to support Ward 27 at Leicester Royal Infirmary and cancer charities. The family say the care Harrison has received following his diagnosis has been "fantastic", but they question whether his condition could have been picked up sooner and have complained to the trust about it.Mitchell says: "It's been a hell of a journey."Gang Xu, deputy medical director at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, says: "We know this is an incredibly difficult time for Harrison and his family, and we understand they have questions around his diagnosis."We are working closely with the family to help provide answers."We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks for their efforts to help raise money to support other children being treated for cancer."Fundraising like this can make a real difference to young patients and their families."

Will 'bold and ambitious' spending pay off?

I think it is fair to say Sunderland have defied all expectations when it comes to their summer only in terms of the money spent but in the number of players fans instinctively knew Sunderland's squad from the Championship needed strengthening for the Premier League campaign. Five or six players with Premier League experience would conservatively have been a lot of people's estimation, but as to how much they would cost and whether that would be enough was always going to be the big question. No-one really knew how much owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus would be prepared to spend with his model of sustainability at the forefront of everything the club has done in his tenure. He and his team have blown everyone away with the money spent but also with the quality of the players signed. Granit Xhaka is the standout example, but he's not the only one. Habib Diarra, Omar Alderete, Noah Sadiki, Simon Adingra, the list goes defeat of West Ham, albeit only one game, suggested all these players are comfortable in their Premier League skin. The bonus was their three goals were scored by three players who came up with the team from the a bold and ambitious bid to stay up but Sunderland fans are certainly backing them to do so. How does it compare to other promoted clubs? According to transfermarkt,, external Sunderland now top the all-time list for amount spent by a promoted club in the Premier a summer spend of £142m so far, both them, and fellow promoted side Burnley - who have spent £109m - are hoping for a solid return on their far as the numbers go, the other four teams to have spent big upon their Premier League return have had mixed Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest narrowly avoided the drop after busy summer windows following promotion, but are now playing in last summer saw Southampton an Ipswich finish as the bottom two sides in the league.

Newcastle United hit back at Alexander Isak's social media statement

Newcastle United have rejected striker Alexander Isak 's claim that he was promised a summer exit, stating he remains under contract. Isak accused the club of 'broken promises' and declared 'trust is lost', asserting that a transfer is now in everyone's best interest. The club issued a strong statement denying any such commitment and indicated that the conditions for a sale, including a rejected £110m bid from Liverpool, would not be met. Isak has not featured for Newcastle in pre-season or their opening league match, reportedly due to a thigh injury, and is training separately. The dispute comes as Newcastle began the season without a recognised striker, having failed to secure other transfer targets.

The Leicester legend is a free agent, and Brendan Rodgers has refused to rule out a reunion with the veteran striker. Another forward who it seems WON'T be coming to Parkhead is Napoli's Giuseppe Ambrosino, who might be needed by Antonio Conte due to Romelu Lukaku's injury. And a new report from transfer guru Sacha Tavolieri says that there are complications in Celts' chase for another forward option. We told you at the start of the month that Celtic were long-term admirers of Michel Ange Balikwisha from Royal Antwerp. And that interest reportedly means they've gone as far as having a medical arranged for the Belgian winger. But Tavolieri posted on X, formerly Twitter: "Michel Ange Balikwisha's situation at Celtic FC is complicated. "The Scottish club has reached a principle agreement with Royal Antwerp FC for the Belgian's departure, and a medical had even been scheduled. "But… internal issues related to the player's situation are still preventing the finalization of the deal. "Wait and see..." Celtic linked with ANOTHER winger and is Balikwisha a DONE DEAL It's not clear what the internal issues holding up the deal are, but Rodgers will be keen to get the signing tied up as soon as possible, with less than two weeks to go until the transfer deadline.
