The Glassworker: Studio Ghibli's legacy lives in Pakistan's first hand-drawn feature
The Glassworker began as an 'impossible dream' and, like every impossible dream, its existence is a testament to the grit and grind of those who willed it to life. They are the artists at Mano Animation Studios, whose co-founder Usman Riaz is the director, animator and co-composer behind Pakistan's first hand-drawn animated feature.
The titular glassworker is Vincent Oliver, voiced by Teresa Gallagher as a child and Sacha Dhawan as an adult. With his father, Tomas (Art Malik), he works at the finest glass workshop in Waterfront town. But as war breaks out over the sovereignty of the Great Ravine, their treasured storefront comes under threat. Amid it all a budding romance sparks between Vincent and Alliz Amano (Anjli Mohindra), a talented violinist who turns out to be the daughter of the colonel who has turned their quaint town into a warfront.
Most of the story unfolds in the form of childhood memories, as Vincent and Alliz grow up under the looming threat of war and try to hold on to their friendship, art and innocence, all of which are impacted by their fathers' beliefs.
Every hand-drawn frame is handled with the utmost care, much like Vincent and Tomas handling the molten glass. In an early sequence, we see the glass-making process in detail as young Vincent empties his lungs into the blowpipe to form a sculpture's final shape; breathing life into it, in a sense. This metaphor is the core of The Glassworker: just like the glass sculpture, beautiful things take a lot of effort to form – but can shatter at just a slight touch. Later in the film, the glass sculpture breaks, foreshadowing the corruption that befalls the glassworks as Alliz's father, Colonel Amano (Tony Jayawardena), coerces Tomas into helping build the army's warships.
Much like Tomas, Amano is a disciplinarian. His battle planes cast ghastly shadows over the lush green fields where Vincent and Alliz play, souring their blossoming companionship. As the story progresses, quiet and subtle moments reveal Amano's tragedy. Like Vincent and Tomas, he, too, has an appreciation for the arts. He loves Alliz's music and, more importantly, he loves her. But war drives him away from his daughter and his sensibilities. We see him at home in a red armchair, broken and tired, underneath a family portrait in which his father, a decorated general, is sitting in the same chair. Father and son are, in their own ways, also victims of the ruthless cycle of war.
The Glassworker's anti-war sentiment and its hand-drawn animation call to mind the works of Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki. The film's aesthetics possess the same emotional resonance and attention to detail that are part of Miyazaki's distinctive style. Even the romantic score is reminiscent of Joe Hisaishi's iconic compositions for Ghibli films. But while The Glassworker's exploration of the hereditary nature of ideals is compelling the film's anti-war philosophy and presentation lack the nuance that is a staple of Miyazaki's works.
Still, Riaz's debut feature is not without glimmers of brilliance. Aside from being a landmark in the history of Pakistani cinema, what sets The Glassworker apart from its inspirations is the rich and vibrant world of Waterfront, partly influenced by Riaz's hometown of Karachi. Although it is difficult to tell if the moral values The Glassworker tries to impart will be remembered, few will forget the bustling market Tomas and Vincent walk through, where the little glassworker is treated to one of the mouth-watering gulab jamuns that sparkle in a pot.
The Glassworker is available to stream on SBS On Demand in Australia, with UK and US streamers yet to be announced. For more recommendations of what to stream in Australia, click here

Disney fans creeped out to learn where they've heard Lilo's voice before
A Lilo & Stitch voice star went on to appear in an iconic horror film, with the two films releasing in the same year and surprising fans of the much-loved family-friendly animated film Fans of the hit animated Disney film Lilo & Stitch are just realising one of its stars featured in a horror classic. The animated classic has just been remade by the studio into a live action feature film. Lilo & Stitch, first released in 2002, follows an alien called Stitch – who tries to impersonate a dog while in the care of Lilo. The voice of Lilo, Daveigh Chase, has stunned audiences though as they realise where they may have seen the star before. While neither Chase or Stitch voice actor Chris Sanders returned for the live action version of the film, some may recognise Lilo's voice star. Fans of the r/TodayILearned subreddit shared the roles Chase had also been cast in, including a horror classic and a film which catapulted actor Jake Gyllenhaal to fame. The user wrote: "Daveigh Chase, who was the voice of Lilo in Lilo & Stich, also played Samara, the creepy girl in The Ring." Fans were stunned to make the connection between the horror classic and the family-friendly animated film. One user joked: "One minute you're making friends with aliens, next minute you're crawling out of TVs. Iconic." Another user in a separate thread sharing the same information added: "The actress which interpreted the little sister of Donnie Darko (Daveigh Chase) was actually the same actress (grown-up) on the movie The Ring, a horror film where people who view a videotape are killed by a monster crawling out of their TV screens, received a sequel in 2017 which marks Chase's final on-screen appearance. Though her feature in the film is just archival footage, it marks her most recent role to date. She also starred in independent horror film Wild in Blue. Chase has not appeared in anything since, though also featured in the English dub of Studio Ghibli classic, Spirited Away, as well as deleted scenes of Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence. Lilo & Stitch and The Ring released in 2002, with the family-friendly comedy about a space monster pretending to be a dog quite the contrast to a film where Chase portrays a ghoul trapped inside a television. Fans of Lilo & Stitch have since found her work in The Ring to be quite chilling. One wrote: "I knew there was a reason Lilo creeped me out. The Ring was the only movie to EVER give me nightmares." Another added: "I have to thank her for giving me those sleepless nights when I was young." A third wrote: "Should have been titled: TIL Donnie Darko's kid sister was the voice of Lilo & Stitch!" Chase also featured in the Donnie Darko sequel, S. Darko, which viewers are keen to forget. One wrote: "Wait a second, Donnie Darko had a sequel?" Another replied: "A s***y sequel, yeah."

Ghibli Park to stay open after dark for the first time this August
One of Japan's most distinctive attractions, Ghibli Park celebrates the beloved characters and stories of the world-renowned Studio Ghibli. Unlike traditional theme parks, it doesn't feature any rides. Instead, it recreates iconic scenes and settings from the studio's anime, fulfilling fans' dreams of stepping into the films' richly imagined worlds in real life. While the park normally closes at 5pm, on three consecutive Saturdays this summer (August 2, 9 and 16), it will extend its opening hours until 8pm. This marks the first time Ghibli Park will remain open past sundown, and we're sure the illuminated night setting will make the grounds look even more magical. Although Ghibli Park is made up of five zones, only three will be included in this after-hours special. Fortunately, these are the park's most popular areas: Mononoke Village (inspired by Princess Mononoke), Valley of Witches (featuring settings from Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service and Earwig and the Witch), and Ghibli's Grand Warehouse (a sprawling museum of sorts dedicated to the studio's greatest hits). Admission tickets for August, including access to the evening sessions, will go on sale at 2pm on Tuesday June 10. On those three special days, Ghibli's Grand Warehouse will offer additional entry slots at 4pm and 5pm. Take your time and wander, but don't miss the 7.30pm last entry for the Valley of Witches and Mononoke Village. Ghibli Park's inaugural evening special is part of Aichi Expo 20 Celebrations 's Night Fantasy festival, which runs on weekends and public holidays from August 2 to 17. During this time, the Aichi Expo Memorial Park – which Ghibli Park calls home – will come alive with summer festivities including Bon Odori, drone shows and more. So once you're done exploring the fantastical world of Ghibli, ease yourself back to reality with the more earthy fun at the memorial park.

Banbury teenage animator nominated for Disney-sponsored award
An 11-year-old girl says it is "amazing" that her animation has been nominated for an award sponsored by from Mollington near Banbury, Oxfordshire, is in the running for the Into Film Awards best animation category for children aged five to Virus is based on a poem she wrote, which won the Benjamin Zephaniah Future Writers competition last said she took inspiration from manga and anime as she was "very fond" of Japanese culture. "My poem is called Together But Not Together and it is about how people often think they're connected with people online ... but it's not the same as knowing someone in real life," she said."My film is about losing yourself within social media and I demonstrated this by making my protagonist lose her colour throughout the film."She said that when she had first entered the competition, she had not considered her creation would "make it through"."Knowing that it did and the panel of judges actually liked it - just them seeing it is amazing - but actually liking is one step forward, it's brilliant. "I never really thought about the fact that lots of people across the UK are going to see my film." Dulcie-Bella described her style as based off of Japanese manga and anime. "I'm very fond of anime and Japanese culture, so I took inspiration from Studio Ghibli - it is one of my favourite animation studios, they've inspired lots of stuff that I've done."The young animator said the studio's My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away were in her "top ten favourite animations"."When I kick back, relax, I often put on some anime, maybe doodle a bit while I'm watching," she added."I'm very fond of the idea of being an animator when I'm older."As my category is sponsored by Disney, it's likely that someone in those big studios will see my animation and will know me - now that I think about it, it's amazing."The awards ceremony will be held on 24 is also nominated in the Audience Choice category.
