The Italian sub meets panzanella in this brilliant, briny salad

Washington Post05-08-2025
'I eat a lot of Italian subs,' social media personality and cookbook author Danny Freeman told me during a recent phone interview. 'It's my go-to sandwich.'
As he was working on his forthcoming second cookbook, 'Italianish,' Freeman knew he wanted to find a way to include his favorite sub. Another of his favorite dishes? Panzanella, inspired by the salads he ate during his childhood and as an ode to the love his dad and daughters have for tomatoes. At 1 and 5 years old, his daughters 'eat cherry tomatoes like candy,' he said. 'They eat big tomatoes like apples.'

June Squibb sparks Oscar buzz for ‘Eleanor the Great': Everything to know about Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut as trailer debuts

For the second year in a row, June Squibb is generating Oscar buzz. The 95-year-old actress, who received critical acclaim for her first leading role in the 2024 comedy Thelma, is once again in awards contention with Eleanor the Great. Helmed by Scarlett Johansson in her feature directorial debut, the film premiered to mixed reviews at the 2025 Venice Film Festival — but all were glowing for Squibb. Watch the trailer below and keep reading for everything you need to know. More from Gold Derby Emmys upheaval: 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' now predicted to win Best Variety Talk Series Beyoncé finally wins an Emmy after 10 nominations: See all the 2025 juried winners What's it about? Written by Tory Kamen, Eleanor the Great focuses on the titular Eleanor (Squibb), who moves to New York from Florida after the death of her best friend and roommate, Bessie, a Holocaust survivor. The story takes a turn when Eleanor finds herself sitting in a Holocaust survivors' support group and proceeds to share Bessie's story as her own. Complications ensue. When does it come out? Sony Pictures Classics will release Eleanor the Great on Sept. 26. Who's in the cast? Joining Squibb onscreen is an impressive ensemble that includes Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as Roger, a local news anchor; Jessica Hecht as Eleanor's daughter, Lisa; Erin Kellyman as Nina, an aspiring journalist; and Rita Zohar as Bessie, Eleanor's lifelong best friend. Who's behind the scenes? Collaborating with Johansson behind the camera are cinematographer Hélène Louvart, editor Harry Jierjian, and composer Dustin O'Halloran, an Oscar nominee in 2017 for his score for Lion. Producers for the film include Johansson, Jessamine Burgum, Charlotte Dauphin, Kara Durrett, Keenan Flynn, Jonathan Lia, Celine Rattray, and Trudie Styler. Awards potential There's already early buzz surrounding Squibb, who kicked off her awards campaign by presenting alongside Johansson at the 2025 Oscars. Following the film's premiere in Cannes back in May, the veteran actress earned a standing ovation for her performance, which critics described as "a pure joy from start to finish," and "the finest performance of her career." Squibb currently sits in 11th place in Gold Derby's early Oscar odds for Best Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards. While she may be seen as an underdog for the Oscar, her chances could improve at the Golden Globes, where six nominees are recognized in both the drama and comedy/musical categories. However, any recognition for the film beyond Squibb's performance is considered an outside shot at this stage. If nominated for an Oscar, it would mark Squibb's second Academy Award nod. Her first came in 2014 when she earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her standout role in Nebraska. ‘The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' Unravels in Official Series Trailer

Amanda Knox becomes an easy target in the official trailer for The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, the upcoming limited series from Hulu. Set to premiere on Aug. 20, the show recounts a dramatized version of the murder trial Knox faced in which she was wrongfully convicted following the death of her roommate, Meredith Kercher. In the trailer, Grace Van Patten stars as Knox during her days as a bright-eyed student studying abroad in Italy. She learns quickly that her studies didn't prepare her to be intensely interrogated by authorities in Italian. 'In order to move forward, I need to go back,' Knox says in the clip, thinking back to 2007. 'I had no idea that my dream was about to become a nightmare.' The series also features Sharon Horgan, John Hoogenakker, Francesco Acquaroli, Giuseppe De Domenico, and Roberta Mattei. The first two episodes will premiere on Aug. 20 followed by weekly releases extending through Oct. 1. Knox serves as an executive producer on the show. The scene recreating the questioning, she recently told Vanity Fair, was one of the hardest to witness being filmed. 'I did not lose my shit on set except for that time,' she said. 'We spent two 10-hour days doing this scene from all the different angles over and over and over again. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to get that right, so that the next person who is wrongly accused and ends up falsely confessing feels like people are more willing to believe them … I just remember sobbing.' For Knox, having a deep involvement in the creative process was essential. 'I wasn't interested in having yet another person's voice telling the worst experience of my life for who knows what reason,' she added. After spending four years in prison, an appeal trial found Knox not guilty of murder in October 2011. 'The practical reality of being a convict and having to prove whether I've been rehabilitated from a crime I did not commit, having to do FBI Background checks and get fingerprinted, have character recommendation letters [written] are all things that follow me,' Knox told Rolling Stone earlier this year. 'It's in the public consciousness. I was very publicly accused and my reputation [was] utterly transformed in the most negative way, internationally. There's no pretending that's not a part of my reality.' Billy Joel Sounds Like 'Bob Dylan if He Had a Cartoon Show' in Hilarious Resurfaced Interview

Billy Joel Sounds Like 'Bob Dylan if He Had a Cartoon Show' in Hilarious Resurfaced Interview originally appeared on Parade. While Billy Joel is unquestionably one of the most successful and beloved musicians of all time, that doesn't mean he hasn't looked to other iconic rock stars for advice from time to time throughout the course of his when he revealed the helpful advice Bob Dylan once gave him, it ended up being one of the funniest moments in late night history. During a recently resurfaced 1997 appearance on Late Night With David Letterman, Joel opened up about what happened when he met Dylan backstage at a performance in Milan, Italy. As Joel explained, he took the opportunity to ask Dylan a very important question. "I said, 'How do you do it, Bob? How do you remember all these words?'' Joel recalled, before going into a Dylan impression to share his response, adding, ''Oh, that's easy. Just go over in the dressing room and take a look on the coffee table.'' "You sound like Bob Dylan if he had a cartoon show," Letterman quipped, laughing at Joel's attempt at a Dylan voice. 'So, I look over on the coffee table, and there is a store-bought book, Bob Dylan's The Songs of Bob Dylan," Joel continued. "He's got them all right there," he added. "He's got this big book on the coffee table. And I say, 'Well, okay, but how do you read the lyrics on-stage?' He goes, 'Well, I really can't read them. I just feel good knowing they're there.' It's like a security blanket. And I've actually started doing it. I put a little book of lyrics on the piano. Of course, you can't dive into them in the middle of a song. But it just makes you feel a little bit better. There they are.' That's not the only time Joel gave fans a laugh with behind-the-scenes story about Dylan, either. During an interview with Howard Stern, Joel remembered what it was like recording "We Are the World" with Dylan in 1985, per I Love Classic Rock, explaining that Dylan was hesitant about singing his part until Stevie Wonder stepped in to help with his vocals. 'Stevie Wonder teaching Bob Dylan to sing like Bob Dylan was a moment," Joel said at the Joel Sounds Like 'Bob Dylan if He Had a Cartoon Show' in Hilarious Resurfaced Interview first appeared on Parade on Aug 12, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 12, 2025, where it first appeared.
