June Squibb sparks Oscar buzz for ‘Eleanor the Great': Everything to know about Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut as trailer debuts

Yahoo2 days ago
For the second year in a row, June Squibb is generating Oscar buzz.
The 95-year-old actress, who received critical acclaim for her first leading role in the 2024 comedy Thelma, is once again in awards contention with Eleanor the Great. Helmed by Scarlett Johansson in her feature directorial debut, the film premiered to mixed reviews at the 2025 Venice Film Festival — but all were glowing for Squibb. Watch the trailer below and keep reading for everything you need to know.

What's it about?
Written by Tory Kamen, Eleanor the Great focuses on the titular Eleanor (Squibb), who moves to New York from Florida after the death of her best friend and roommate, Bessie, a Holocaust survivor. The story takes a turn when Eleanor finds herself sitting in a Holocaust survivors' support group and proceeds to share Bessie's story as her own. Complications ensue.
When does it come out?
Sony Pictures Classics will release Eleanor the Great on Sept. 26.
Who's in the cast?
Joining Squibb onscreen is an impressive ensemble that includes Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as Roger, a local news anchor; Jessica Hecht as Eleanor's daughter, Lisa; Erin Kellyman as Nina, an aspiring journalist; and Rita Zohar as Bessie, Eleanor's lifelong best friend.
Who's behind the scenes?
Collaborating with Johansson behind the camera are cinematographer Hélène Louvart, editor Harry Jierjian, and composer Dustin O'Halloran, an Oscar nominee in 2017 for his score for Lion. Producers for the film include Johansson, Jessamine Burgum, Charlotte Dauphin, Kara Durrett, Keenan Flynn, Jonathan Lia, Celine Rattray, and Trudie Styler.
Awards potential
There's already early buzz surrounding Squibb, who kicked off her awards campaign by presenting alongside Johansson at the 2025 Oscars. Following the film's premiere in Cannes back in May, the veteran actress earned a standing ovation for her performance, which critics described as "a pure joy from start to finish," and "the finest performance of her career."
Squibb currently sits in 11th place in Gold Derby's early Oscar odds for Best Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards. While she may be seen as an underdog for the Oscar, her chances could improve at the Golden Globes, where six nominees are recognized in both the drama and comedy/musical categories. However, any recognition for the film beyond Squibb's performance is considered an outside shot at this stage.
If nominated for an Oscar, it would mark Squibb's second Academy Award nod. Her first came in 2014 when she earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her standout role in Nebraska.

Taylor Swift Announces Big Album News With Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift Announces Big Album News With Travis Kelce originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pop star Taylor Swift has officially confirmed her 12th studio album and she did it while sitting next to boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, on his hit podcast 'New Heights.' In a preview clip released ahead of the Wednesday episode, Swift appeared alongside Travis Kelce and his brother, co-host Jason Kelce. With a small smile, she placed a briefcase marked with gold 'T.S.' initials on the table. Then came the big reveal. 'So I want to show you something,' Swift said as she opened it. 'This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl.' The reveal followed heavy speculation from Swifties. On Monday morning, her official social media team, Taylor Nation, posted 12 photos from the Eras Tour, all featuring the singer in bright orange outfits. Comment sections quickly filled with theories about a new album and hints that Swift would appear on "New Heights." Adding to the buzz, a silhouette of a woman against an orange background appeared in "New Heights'" promotional image for this week's episode, alongside Travis Kelce wearing Eras Tour merchandise. The excitement escalated when Swift's official website added a countdown ending at exactly 12:12 a.m. ET on Aug. 12. Beginning in May 2024, she introduced multiple orange costumes, including an orange "Lover" bodysuit and blazer, along with an orange dress for her acoustic section. Fans began to believe orange would be the theme color for 'TS12.' Swift's last album, "The Tortured Poets Department," released in April 2024, spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It was her most successful album debut and earned another Album of the Year Grammy nomination. In a previous teaser, the couple didn't just talk music, they also gave fans a rare look at their playful dynamic. At one point, Swift complimented Travis Kelce's blue hoodie, saying, 'Such a nice color on you.' 'It's the color of your eyes, sweetie,' the tight end replied. 'That's why we match so well.' The clip showed a relaxed Swift smiling and laughing through the banter, something fans immediately shared across social media. The full "New Heights" episode featuring Swift will premiere Wednesday and is expected to include more details about "The Life of a Showgirl." Whether or not she reveals the release date during the podcast, Swift has once again managed to turn a simple teaser into a worldwide story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 12, 2025, where it first appeared. 'We Grew Up Doing This': Jason Kelce Enlists Travis Kelce for Hilarious Short Film

'We Grew Up Doing This': Jason Kelce Enlists Travis Kelce for Hilarious Short Film originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jason Kelce is back in the dojo, but this time, he's not fighting alone. The former Philadelphia Eagles center is teaming up with his brother, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, for 'Brewmite II,' the sequel to the viral martial arts comedy short film produced by their beer brand, Garage Beer. The 12-minute sequel, set to premiere online on Aug. 7 and debut in person at Pennsylvania's Colonial Theatre on Aug. 16, follows Jason Kelce as he faces a new round of absurd, over-the-top martial arts battles. This time, UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell, 'The Iceman,' steps into the ring as one of his fiercest opponents yet. Jason Kelce Brings Travis Kelce Into the Fight The first 'Brewmite' short film, released earlier this year, featured Jason Kelce as a determined warrior competing for the fictional 'Golden Garage.' It became an instant hit with fans for its mix of ridiculous fight sequences and self-aware humor. For the sequel, the retired NFL star says the decision to bring his younger brother along was an easy one. 'Bringing Trav into the mix was awesome. We grew up doing ridiculous martial arts moves on each other, and honestly, this wasn't the first time one of us slapped the other,' Jason Kelce told Variety. The film's trailer shows the celebrated tight end cheering from the sidelines as the former Philadelphia Eagles center unleashes his signature move, the 'Kelce Split.' The brothers' real-life sibling banter spills onto the screen, giving fans a glimpse of the playful rivalry that has followed them since childhood. While Jason Kelce is the star of the film, 'Brewmite II' is stacked with cameos and high-profile appearances. Alongside Liddell's menacing presence, the movie features a voiceover by Philadelphia radio icon Joe Conklin and an appearance by WWE announcer Mike Rome. The short film was directed by Jordan Phoenix and filmed at a hidden Miami dojo. Jason Kelce's character once again trains under Chief Master Velilla and maintains a bond with his former Eagles teammate and on-screen sensei, Bo Allen. This time, the stakes are higher, the opponents are tougher, the fights are stranger and the path to victory is even more unpredictable. Beyond the Film Garage Beer, co-owned by the Kelce brothers, is using the film to connect with fans in a unique way. The company is rolling out behind-the-scenes footage, limited-edition merchandise, and even a retro VHS version of the film to celebrate its release. The Kelce brothers' partnership goes beyond the screen, too. Earlier this year, they announced their joint ownership of the St. Joseph Goats, a team in The Arena League. Jason Kelce's NFL career was filled with intense battles on the field, but "Brewmite II" gives fans a new kind of highlight — one filled with flying kicks, exaggerated fight scenes and sibling story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 1, 2025, where it first appeared.
