'Opportune time to accumulate quality stocks'

AmEquities CEO Ng said three conditions are needed to revive market activity.
KUALA LUMPUR: AmInvestment Bank Bhd has a cautiously optimistic view on market outlook, citing stable fundamentals but acknowledged ongoing headwinds that suppress market sentiment.
'Deals are in the pipeline, but the problem is uncertainty,' the bank's newly-appointed chief executive officer Christopher Ng Kok Wai told StarBiz at the launching of the AmEquities trading platform and media briefing here, yesterday.
Many investment opportunities are available but companies are not able to continue without improved market clarity, he added.
According to Ng, three conditions are needed to revive market activity namely a strong economic impetus, US interest rate cuts and clarity on tariffs as well as global trade.
'Fund managers are still holding elevated levels of cash relative to pre-Covid-19 norms. Once a catalyst emerges, we expect those funds to be deployed,' he noted.
He said last year's positive market performance was supported by the strengthening ringgit, strong inflows into the data centre segment and political stability.
Ng described the current market environment as being on 'auto cruise', where it is steady but lacks momentum.
'It's not bad, but it's not good either. We need an impetus,' he said, adding that global uncertainties, particularly around tariffs and the US rate cycle, continued to weigh on sentiment.
While the broader market outlook remained mixed, Ng said fundamentals remained sound.
'From a domestic standpoint, consumption is still strong,' he said.
He stated that crude oil prices of between US$70 and US$80 per barrel would be sufficient for the oil and gas sector to remain viable.
'The industry isn't asking for a boom, just stability,' he added.
On the retail front, Ng acknowledged that most investors had remained cautious and on the sidelines.
'Retail investors are understandably hesitant, especially with the external environment. But there are still opportunities,' he said.
With the FBM KLCI trading below its historical average, it could be an opportune time to accumulate quality stocks.
'It may not feel like the perfect time, but valuations are reasonable. Caution is warranted, but not paralysis.
'We are cautiously optimistic. As a focused, Malaysian-centric player, we see this market environment as a window to create opportunities, even when sentiment is soft,' he added.
The AmEquities trading platform is offering a host of advanced features including customisable dashboards, access to live market data in real time with multilingual support.
It aims to provide investors with a seamless and informed trading experience, reflecting the bank's commitment to innovation amid a challenging market environment.

Tomei strikes gold as Q2 earnings jump 26pct on robust margins

KUALA LUMPUR: Tomei Consolidated Bhd's net profit rose 26.5 per cent to RM25.15 million in the second quarter ended June 30, 2025, from RM19.88 million a year earlier, lifted by higher retail gold prices and stronger margins across both its business segments. Revenue climbed 16 per cent to RM310.81 million compared with RM266.91 million previously, driven by a 14 per cent jump in retail sales to RM245.47 million and an eight per cent rise in manufacturing and wholesale revenue to RM67.06 million. Pre-tax profit expanded 28.9 per cent to RM36.82 million from RM28.56 million last year. The retail segment contributed the bulk, with a pre-tax profit of RM31.85 million, while manufacturing and wholesale delivered RM4.97 million. For the first half of 2025, net profit surged 29.80 per cent to RM52.98 million against RM40.82 million a year ago, while revenue grew 11.73 per cent to RM658.82 million from RM589.66 million. Group managing director Datuk Ng Yih Pyng said the improved results reflected the resilience of the group's business model and agility in responding to market conditions, allowing it to capture opportunities in a favourable gold price environment. "The operating environment remains challenging, with geopolitical tension, rising operational costs, and the expanded Sales and Service Tax expected to impact sentiments and cost structures," he said in a statement. "We will continue to monitor developments closely and take proactive measures to sustain profitability, focusing on operational efficiency, prudent cost management and agility in responding to market changes." Looking ahead, Ng said the company remains committed to strengthening its market position by optimising its product mix, leveraging brand trust and delivering sustainable value to shareholders. As at June 30, 2025, Tomei's cash and bank balances stood at RM30.26 million, compared with RM36.39 million at end-2024. Total borrowings amounted to RM294.26 million, while net gearing inched up to 0.52 times from 0.50 times a year earlier. The jeweller paid a final single-tier dividend of 2.5 sen per share amounting to RM3.47 million on June 13 in respect of the financial year ended Dec 31, 2024. No interim dividend was declared for the current quarter.

M'sia must do the right thing, Sim tells Guan Eng on minimum wage

PARLIAMENT | Human Resources Minister Steven Sim has pressed home the importance of mandating the same minimum wage for Malaysian workers and migrant workers alike. During his winding-up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan at Parliament today, he cited humanitarian as well as pragmatic reasons for the policy, in response to Lim Guan Eng's (Harapan-Bagan) proposal to do away with the minimum wage mandate for migrant workers.

Malaysian homeowners not protected in current form of Urban Renewal Act, says Fomca

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is not ready for the Urban Renewal Act (URA) in its current form as it is too sensitive, says Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (Fomca) chief executive officer Dr T. Saravanan. 'The Act is too far-reaching, and too dangerous to be rushed into Parliament without a fundamental revamp and genuine stakeholder consultation. At stake are the very homes, livelihoods, and security of Malaysian families,' he said. Saravanan added that safeguards must be put in place to protect homeowners, as developers have been approaching residents with half-truths and promises that are either misleading or incomplete or applying pressure to sign consent documents. 'For most Malaysians, a home is their largest lifetime investment, built through decades of hard work and representing priceless family memories. To expose citizens to such risks without strong safeguards is unacceptable,' he added. Saravanan then said that if the URA is introduced in its current state, it will tilt the balance dangerously in favour of developers, effectively becoming a developers' charter instead of a people's charter. 'Fomca insists that a 95% consent threshold is the only acceptable safeguard. Any lower threshold — whether 75 or 80% — would open the door to forced displacement,' he added. Saravanan said that a 95% safeguard ensures that redevelopment can only proceed with overwhelming community support and compels developers to negotiate fairly instead of forcing through projects with a slim majority. 'Any credible URA must guarantee fundamental rights for homeowners. Families must have access to clear and accurate information in languages they understand, not sales pitches masquerading as proposals,' he added. Saravanan then said that consent must be verified independently and transparently, free from coercion. 'Disputes must be resolved through independent tribunals with equal representation, and legal aid must be made available so that no homeowner is left voiceless,' he added. 'Compensation must reflect not just market value but also relocation costs and the emotional loss of uprooting families. Above all, dignity and non-coercion must be guaranteed,' said Saravanan. He then said that urban renewal should be about empowering communities and not displacing them. 'Urban renewal should preserve social bonds, not tear them apart. It should strengthen trust between the people and the government, not erode it,' he said. 'If the URA is rushed through Parliament in its present form, it risks leaving ordinary citizens exposed to exploitation and injustice, undermining public faith in both government and law,' added Saravanan.
