
Suzuki's flagship SUV hanging on, but for how much longer?
The S-Cross was one of five Suzukis to fall victim to updated Australian Design Rules (ADR) that outlined specific performance requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems. This change also affected several Mitsubishi models.
Suzuki Australia announced production of the S-Cross ended in February 2025, ahead of the introduction of the new rules on March 1, 2025.
Since then, there has been no confirmation on whether shipments of the S-Cross would resume with a compliant AEB system, though separate distributor Suzuki Queensland said it was axing the model.
However, Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota says the model is not yet extinct in showrooms.

'From an S-Cross perspective, based on our current inventory, we still have a long sales journey based on what we can supply and what we can sell,' he told CarExpert.
'So we're still re-evaluating that position, but we haven't made a decision yet on S-Cross' future per se.
'We'll continue selling it until we haven't got it, maybe.'
Mr Pachota's vague wording doesn't inspire confidence for the resurrection of the S-Cross, at least as we know it. This isn't surprising, given the S-Cross was comfortably Suzuki's lowest-volume model in its final two full years on sale.

The current, Hungarian-built S-Cross, launched here in 2022 as a significant update of a model that entered production in 2013.
Suzuki Australia had previously confirmed it would bring a hybrid version of the S-Cross to Australia in 2024, but this never eventuated. The outgoing car is still available on Suzuki Australia's website in both MY23 and MY24 guises, starting at $33,290 and $36,990 drive-away respectively.
As for the Vitara, which was axed by the separate Suzuki Queensland entity, Suzuki Australia has confirmed an updated Vitara Hybrid and new electric eVitara will launch in early 2026. The latter will be Suzuki's first-ever fully electric vehicle (EV).
When asked about early indications for the Vitara Hybrid, which has yet to be confirmed with either mild- or strong-hybrid power, Mr Pachota said he believes 'the Australian consumers are ready for a hybrid Vitara'.

2026 Nissan X-Trail Nismo revealed as performance-focused hybrid SUV
The Nissan X-Trail Nismo is the spiciest version of the popular mid-size SUV yet… but it's not coming to Australia. Nissan Australia has confirmed the new range-topping X-Trail is exclusive to the Japanese market, where it'll launch in September and join an array of other Nismo-fettled models we miss out on such as the Leaf Nismo, Note Nismo, and Skyline Nismo. This is the first time the X-Trail has worn the Nismo nameplate, and it has received various mechanical enhancements to improve its dynamics with Nissan claiming it offers 'excellent cornering ability, enjoyable acceleration and a refined ride'. Its suspension features retuned springs and Kayaba Swing Valve dampers, a first for Nissan, with the brand claiming these help maintain body control while maximising ride comfort. It's said to have greater rear-wheel drive distribution and enhanced line-tracing while accelerating through corners, and characteristics of the system including front/rear drive distribution that differ with each drive mode. Nismo variants don't always offer extra power, and that appears to be the case with this fettled X-Trail with no mention made by Nissan of higher outputs from its e-Power with e-4orce powertrain. This features a 105kW/250Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine mated with 150kW/330Nm front and 100kW/195Nm rear electric motors. The X-Trail Nismo rides on Michelin Pilot Sport EV 255/45R20 tyres wrapped around 20-inch Enkei aluminium wheels. Other visible changes include unique front and rear spoilers with prominent red accents, as well as dark chrome accents. Down back, there's also a unique rear diffuser with a low-mounted rear fog lamp intended to evoke race cars. Naturally, the X-Trail Nismo can be had in Nismo's signature Stealth Grey, paired with a Super Black roof. Other exterior colours include Cardinal Red, Prism White, Dark Metal Grey, and Diamond Black. Nissan claims there's more downforce, with lift reduced by 29 per cent compared to the base X-Trail. Inside, there's a black interior with various red highlights. That includes the stitching on the doors, dashboard, centre console and steering wheel, while there's also a red start button. The seats are upholstered in fabric and leatherette and also feature red stitching. Power-adjustable, heated front sports seats from Recaro are optional. The X-Trail Nismo is available only with a five-seat configuration. It joins Autech versions of the X-Trail – named for another Nissan tuning arm – as being yet another variant of the mid-size SUV exclusive to the Japanese market. Mid-size SUVs may be the most popular new vehicles in Australia, but at least among mainstream brands there have been very few attempts to offer overtly sporty models. Exceptions to this include the old Volkswagen Tiguan R (and its tamer 195TSI R Line successor), as well as the upcoming Toyota RAV4 GR Sport. Z Nismo sports car.

2026 Nissan X-Trail facelift brings more tech, rugged-looking Rock Creek
The Nissan X-Trail is getting upgraded infotainment for 2026, as well as a rugged-looking Rock Creek variant and a sporty Nismo range-topper. Nissan Australia had no update on when the refreshed X-Trail will come Down Under. It'll go on sale in Japan from September 18. It has, however, confirmed the new Nismo flagship won't come here. Externally, the updated mid-size SUV is distinguished by a new grille, a gloss black lower bumper with satin silver accents, new alloy wheel designs, and LED front and rear indicators. Inside, the upper part of the dashboard is now black, while the available tan Nappa leather interior has been replaced with a 'more subdued' brown. All USB-A outlets have been replaced with USB-C outlets, while the surround-view camera features a 3D view and an invisible bonnet view to show what's going on underneath the vehicle. The headline change inside the cabin is the more to the new-generation 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which features Google built-in. This means Google Maps and the Google Assistant are embedded in the infotainment system, with more apps available for download using the Google Play Store. The infotainment system also features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and in-car wi-fi. Owners can remotely adjust climate control settings and lock and unlock the car using the Nissan Connect smartphone app. A new Rock Creek variant joins the lineup, following its reveal late in 2024 for the X-Trail's US-built Rogue twin. Like the Rogue Rock Creek, it features unique styling touches inside and out though Nissan Japan makes no mention of any added off-road ability. There's a unique front bumper and grille, as well as 19-inch alloy wheels finished in black with Lava Red accents. There are also black roof rails and mirror caps. The 'hero colour' of the X-Trail Rock creek is Canyon Beige with a Super Black roof, which will be exclusive to this new variant. Inside, there's waterproof upholstery with Lava Red accents found on the seats, door trims, dashboard, centre console, and steering wheel. The Rock Creek replaces the Extremer X in the Japanese market, which closely resembles the N-Trek offered here. As before, there's a version of the X-Trail customised by Nissan's Autech division. It gains a Sports Spec variant with a retuned all-wheel drive system and suspension. Autech X-Trails are exclusive to the Japanese market. There's one key difference between the Japanese-market X-Trail and ours, and that's under the bonnet. While Nissan offers the same e-Power series hybrid powertrain across both markets, the standard engine in the Japanese-market X-Trail is a 106kW/250Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine instead of a 135kW/244Nm naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four like in Australia. No mechanical changes have been detailed for the X-Trail, though the sporty Nismo features a retuned all-wheel drive system, steering and suspension. In addition to the difference in base engine, the Japanese X-Trail lineup differs in other ways from ours. There's no petrol all-wheel drive option, for example, while the e-Power hybrid powertrain is offered with seven seats there. The X-Trail has long been a popular mid-size SUV in Australia, though it's currently being outpaced by its Mitsubishi Outlander platform-mate. To the end of July, Nissan Australia has delivered 9648 X-Trails against 13,268 Outlanders. Both, however, are significantly outsold by the Toyota RAV4 (28,449), which dominates this segment.

Ford Ranger Black Edition returns for $1000 less
The Ford Ranger Black Edition will return to Ford Australia showrooms at a lower price for the 2026 model year (MY26), following the sell-out success of its special-edition predecessor, which was limited to 1500 vehicles. Order books are open now ahead of first customer deliveries in October, and the latest Ranger Black Edition is priced from $57,000 drive-away for private buyers – or $55,000 drive-away for ABN holders – undercutting the previous version by $1000. It means the Black Edition is the only MY26 Ranger – not counting the new Ranger PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) – to escape a range-wide $250 price increase last month, when the related Everest SUV and Mustang sports car also became more expensive. Ford says its latest Ranger Black Edition is also a 'limited run' variant, but would not say how many units it will offer Australian customers when asked by CarExpert. Whatever the number, it will give Ford another arrow in its quiver to help maintain the Ranger's position as Australia's best-selling vehicle ahead of its arch-rival Toyota HiLux and the ever-present threat from the Toyota RAV4 mid-size SUV. The Black Edition formula remains unchanged, with the MY26 version once again based on the Ranger XL dual-cab 4×4 Bi-Turbo – which is priced at $54,630 before-on road costs – and bringing a raft of black accessories and extra equipment. This includes an Asphalt Black mesh front grille with Bolder Grey inserts (apparently no longer 'Boulder Grey'), 17-inch Asphalt Black alloy wheels with Bridgestone Dueler A/T (all-terrain) tyres, and black side steps. A black 'long-legged' sports bar is also carried over from the previous Black Edition, stretching along the flanks of the rear tub which gets a drop-in bedliner and cargo management system stowage. Inside, Black Editions add a carpeted floor and a carpet driver's floor mat, but there's no changes to the 154kW/500Nm twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine and 10-speed transmission, or the 994kg payload and 3500kg towing capacity. Options include a towing pack at $1950 (up $50), while Prestige Paint – any exterior colour other than the standard Artic White – costs $750 extra, and includes Meteor Grey, Aluminium (silver) and Black. The 2026 Ranger lineup will also include the first Ranger Super Duty, a more capable ute with a 4500kg tow rating to take on the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series.
