Tom Cruise to receive honorary Oscar in career first - Screens - Arts & Culture
Cruise was selected to receive a statuette for his contributions to cinema, along with choreographer Debbie Allen and production designer Wynn Thomas.
Dolly Parton will also be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades-long humanitarian work, with the trophies presented at the Academy's 16th Governors Awards event in November.
Cruise, 62, has had four Oscar nominations but has never won the prestigious prize, despite achieving global fame for his roles in action films "Mission: Impossible" and "Top Gun."
"Tom Cruise's incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all," the Academy said in a statement.
It praised him as "one of the most recognized and highest-grossing actors of all time" and noted his commitment to performing all of his own stunts.
Allen, 75, was recognized for her five-decade career that has included choreographing the Academy Awards ceremony seven times and working on films including 1995 rom-com "Forget Paris."
Meanwhile, Thomas was saluted for his production work on titles such as "Malcolm X" and "Do the Right Thing."

The 32nd Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre (CIFET) will open with The Triumph of Horus, an ancient Egyptian sacred drama often described as one of the earliest, if not oldest, ceremonial dramatic texts known to humanity. The ritual, rooted in Edfu in Upper Egypt, reenacts the mythological victory of Horus and celebrates his divine kingship. Structured as a prologue, three acts, and an epilogue, it is considered an early example of Egyptian theatrical forms fused with myth and ritual. The staging for CIFET's opening ceremony will be directed and choreographed by Walid Aouni, the Cairo-based Lebanese choreographer honoured at last year's 31st edition for more than three decades of work in Egypt's modern dance and theatre scene. Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre Launched in 1988 by then-culture minister Farouk Hosny, CIFET has long been one of Egypt's most significant cultural events, designed to place Cairo on the international theatre map. The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture. For its first two decades, the festival ran over 10 days each September, attracting dozens of Arab and international troupes for awards — at its peak in the late 2000s, CIFET was hosting 40 to 50 performances across multiple venues in Cairo and beyond. The event was suspended for five years after the January 2011 revolution, before returning in 2016 under Sameh Mahran as its president. Renamed the Cairo International Festival for Contemporary and Experimental Theatre (CIFCET), it adopted a smaller programme, a shorter run, and dropped its competitive format. In 2020, during its 27th edition, the festival reverted to its original name and reinstated competition under the late theatre academic and playwright Alaa Abdel-Aziz. Mahran returned as CIFET president in 2023. The 32nd edition of CIFET will run from 1 to 8 September, with the full programme still to be announced. Ireland Picks "Sanatorium" for Oscar Race
Yara Sameh The Irish Film and Television Academy has selected Ireland's official entry for the international feature film category of the next Academy Awards. 'Sanatorium,' the Irish-made, Ukrainian-language documentary, is set to represent the country at the 98th Oscars, following in the footsteps of last year's 'Kneecap,' which was shortlisted, and 2003's 'The Quiet Girl,' which became the first film submitted by Ireland to be nominated. The feature debut of Galway-born filmmaker Gar O'Rourke, 'Sanatorium' takes a vivid look at at Kuyalnik Sanatorium, a large 1970s building near Odessa in southern Ukraine, where a small group searches for love, healing and happiness and where mud treatments and Soviet-era therapies continue despite a war close by. The biggest attraction is the mysterious black mud, said to cure infertility, physical disabilities and various other ailments. The film had its world premiere at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen in their main international competition, DOX:AWARD, in late March. 'Sanatorium' is produced by Venom Films by IFTA-winning Ken Wardrop and Andrew Freedman ('His & Hers,' 'Making the Grade'), along with Samantha Corr. It was was co-produced by 2332 Films Ukraine and made with support from Screen Ireland, BBC Storyville, MetFilm Sales, France TV, and Creative Europe. The film was edited by John Murphy ('The Quiet Girl'), with Denys Melnyk ('Militantropos') as director of photography. Irish Distributor Eclipse Pictures will release the film in Irish Cinemas on September 5. Palestine Picks "Palestine 36" as Oscar Entry
Yara Sameh Palestine has selected Annemarie Jacir's "Palestine 36" as its official entry for the international feature film category of the 2025 Academy Awards. The historical drama is set in 1936 during the Palestinian revolt against British colonial rule. The film follows Yusuf, a young villager caught between his rural home and the political upheaval in Jerusalem, as tensions rise amid growing unrest, British crackdowns, and the influx of Jewish immigrants escaping antisemitism in Europe. "Palestine 36" will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival with a gala screening during the opening weekend on September 5. The ensemble cast includes Hiam Abbass (Succession), Saleh Bakri (Blue Caftan), Robert Aramayo (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Billy Howle (The Perfect Couple), Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), Dafer L'Abidine (Children of Men), Yasmine Al-Massri (The Strangers Case), Yumna Marwan, newcomer Karim Daoud Anaya as Yusuf, and Academy Award winner Jeremy Irons (The Beekeeper). Produced by Ossama Bawardi, Cat Villiers, Azzam Fakhreddin, Hani Farsi, Nils Åstrand, Olivier Barbier, Nathanaël Karmitz, Katrin Pors and Hamza Ali, the film was made through Philistine Films, Autonomous, Corniche Media, MK Productions, and Snowglobe. Production was initially planned to shoot entirely in Palestine but was disrupted following the events of October 7, with parts relocated to Jordan before returning to complete the film on location in Palestine. Jacir, one of the most prominent Palestinian filmmakers, previously directed "Salt of the Sea" (2008), "When I Saw You" (2012) and "Wajib" (2017), all of which were selected as Palestine's Oscar entries. She is also the founder of Philistine Films, a production company supporting independent Arab cinema. France's mk2 films and Lucky Number are handling international sales.
