Kerala govt's focus on welfare development and unity: Pinarayi
In his Independence Day address, Vijayan said, "We are at a stage where we have undertaken the mission to transform Kerala into a knowledge-based innovative society.
Kerala is being built on a knowledge-based economy to secure the future of our coming generations.
We are moving forward by strengthening both people's welfare and state's development. On one hand, there is eradication of extreme poverty and on the other, building the future Kerala. This is also the occasion to pledge that all efforts will be made for these goals. We are advancing into a new era, achieving digital literacy and more.
This is a comprehensive advancement that includes everyone."
It's time to renew our commitment to make the country free of poverty, hunger deaths, child labour, illiteracy, caste bias, religious intolerance, lack of basics and unemployment, he added.
"An India without poverty, starvation deaths, child labour, illiteracy, caste discrimination, religious hatred, denial of basic necessities and unemployment.

Have we been able to make this dream a reality? The truth is, we have not. Therefore, during this Independence Day celebration, we must rededicate ourselves to making all these dreams come true," said Vijayan.
"India's greatest achievement in the past decades is that, except for a brief period, we have been able to maintain democracy in the country. This is no small feat. We have seen neighbouring countries where democracy was overthrown and replaced by military rule.
We have seen calls for theocracy gaining strength in some places. We have also seen democratic govts being replaced by puppet regimes under imperial control," he said.
"No matter what shortcomings exist at any level, the framers of our Constitution have reflected in it the determination that democracy should not ultimately be destroyed. We must protect it," he added.
"Even as external imperial threats rise against the sovereignty of the country, divisive threats that can fracture the unity of the people are emerging from within. Forces of communalism are intensifying efforts to fracture the 'idea of India' along caste and religious lines. We must be able to resist and defeat this with unity beyond all divisions. This is the occasion to take such a pledge," he said.

Students' union prez accuses state Cong chief of assault
Panaji: In another embarrassment for Congress, National Students' Union of India (NSUI) state president Naushad Chowdhari has filed a complaint with the national leadership against state Congress president Amit Patkar. According to the complaint, Patkar allegedly abused and manhandled Chowdhari during a clash at the party office on Aug 14. A written complaint was submitted to the NSUI national president, Varun Chaudhary, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in charge of Goa, Manikrao Thakre, and the AICC co-incharge for Goa, Anjali Nimbalkar. The incident occurred during Chowdhari's meeting with NSUI secretary in charge of Goa, Vaishnavi Bhardwaj. The complaint stated that Patkar was upset over being excluded from NSUI events and not being informed about Bhardwaj's visit to Goa. 'I calmly explained that I attempted to contact him multiple times, but my calls went unanswered. Despite this explanation, Patkar's demeanour became increasingly aggressive. In a shocking act, he pushed me on the stairway and attacked me and caught me by the collar of my shirt,' said Chowdhari in his complaint. The altercation was witnessed by Bhardwaj and state Congress general secretary Advocate Shrinivas Khalap. Chowdhari urged the AICC to take action against Patkar, warning that he will approach the Goa police if the party does not punish Patkar. The attack left him shaken and disrespected within the party, said Chowdhari. He said that Patkar's unprovoked aggression, vile language, and repeated attempts to demotivate him are unacceptable and against the principles of decency, respect, and discipline. The incident is expected to further demoralise the party workers and supporters. Exactly a month earlier, Patkar had written to the AICC seeking 'urgent' disciplinary action against Aldona MLA, Carlos Ferreira, for anti-party conduct. Govt slashes competitive exam fees; CM vows to boost policing
Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Friday announced a significant relief for job aspirants taking two-tier competitive examinations conducted by state govt agencies, reducing the preliminary test (PT) fee to Rs 100 and waiving all fees for the main examinations. The announcement came during his address at the main state Independence Day function at Gandhi Maidan, where contingents of the state police, NCC and other groups saluted the CM. Various departments also showcased their tableaux to mark the celebration. Nitish said the relevant department would issue the notification soon. "Since we came to power in November 2005, the first step we took was controlling crimes and improving law and order, which remains the highest priority of the govt," he told the gathering, adding that a society where the rule of law prevails without fear was essential for progress. He highlighted the expansion of the police force from 42,000 personnel in 2005 to 1.10 lakh by 2022. A review last year concluded that Bihar required at least 2.22 lakh police personnel. "By now, we have further increased the strength to 1.31 lakh and are taking steps to reach the target of 2.23 lakh," he said, appealing for communal harmony. The CM described the caste-based headcount and economic survey as a landmark initiative, revealing that 94 lakh families across all caste and social groups had been identified as poor. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo "The govt decided to provide Rs 2 lakh to each of these poor families, and while some steps were taken earlier, it has now been decided to release the funds simultaneously. A high-level committee is working swiftly on this," he added. Nitish also recalled achievements in education, health, infrastructure, power supply and women's empowerment, especially through the Jeevika Didi programme. He said during his Pragati Yatra earlier this year, 430 schemes were announced, all of which had been approved by the cabinet with an overall investment of Rs 50,000 crore.
