PKR Serian chief proposes new Bung Sadung state seat for fairer development
KUCHING (July 24): A new state seat must be created in Serian Division to ensure equal development and fairer allocation of government funds, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Serian chief Senior William Rade.
He proposed this new constituency be named Bung Sadung, after an iconic mountain in the Bidayuh-majority area, and strongly believed the location holds great potential for agrotourism and agricultural activities that could boost the local economy.
He explained the proposed constituency should comprise villages surrounding Bung Sadung, those around the Padawan link road, and nearby villages.
'The villages in this proposed new constituency can number up to 50, and are mostly Bidayuh villages. Under a new constituency, these villages will benefit from more focused efforts to boost the local economy, including agrotourism.
'Also, with this new constituency, it is our hope there will be a township built there as the administrative centre and rural growth centre, which is also good for the local economy,' he said.
Senior made these remarks when commenting on the recent passing of the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Composition of Membership) Bill, 2025 by the State Legislative Assembly (DUN), which paved the way for an increase in the number of state constituencies from 82 to 99.
He said that the increase of 17 new seats should ensure there is no longer under-representation of the people, especially in constituencies which are vast in size.
He also noted that the new constituency proposed by him would take up mostly villages which are currently in the Tebedu state constituency
'Look at it this way, these villages will benefit under bigger government funding, and a lot of development projects can be implemented when placed under this new constituency. For Tebedu, there can be more focus towards developing it as the Gateway to Sarawak, particularly since the Indonesian new capital city is being built in Kalimantan,' he said.
He hoped the local leaders, professionals and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will support the idea for this proposed new constituency and the name suggested for it.
'On the behalf of the people, I request the Election Commission (EC) will look into the matter seriously during the redelineation exercise. This is for the long-term growth of the area.
'The area is growing in population and number of settlements, and the people need a ADUN (assemblyman) to servs the rea effectively,' he said.
If the idea is not materialised, he is worried that the people there will further miss out on development and financial spin-offs, as it will take up to another 10 years for another redelineation exercise to take place.
'We hope everyone can support this idea. Now it is the best opportunity to realise this new constituency, under this stable government led by PMX (current Prime Minister) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim),' he added. Bung Sadung lead new Senior William Rade Serian division state seat

New aid convoy reaches Syria's Druze province amid crisis
DAMASCUS: A new humanitarian aid convoy arrived in southern Syria's Druze-majority Sweida province on Monday, state media reported, as the United Nations raised alarms over the worsening crisis in the region. The delivery comes after weeks of deadly violence that displaced thousands and left critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. State television broadcast footage of trucks entering the province, marking the third such convoy since clashes erupted earlier this month. The Syrian Arab Red Crescent coordinated the effort, which included 27 trucks carrying 200 tonnes of flour, 2,000 shelter kits, and 1,000 food baskets, according to state news agency SANA. The supplies were provided through cooperation between international organisations, the Syrian government, and local groups. Despite a ceasefire, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that Sweida's situation remains dire. 'Humanitarian access... remains constrained, hampering the ability of humanitarians to assess need thoroughly and to provide critical life-saving assistance on a large scale,' OCHA said in a statement. The violence has displaced at least 176,000 people, with reports of power outages and severe shortages of essentials. Local media outlet Suwayda 24 described conditions as 'dire,' calling for more aid convoys to address the escalating crisis. On Sunday, civil groups warned of a 'humanitarian catastrophe,' accusing authorities of imposing a suffocating siege that has blocked basic supplies. While Sweida's governor claimed aid was entering normally, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that government-affiliated armed groups were obstructing traffic on the Sweida-Damascus highway, preventing goods from reaching affected areas. – AFP

Extremists using religion for politics must be condemned
KUALA LUMPUR: Those who adopt extremist ideologies and manipulate religion for political purposes must be strongly condemned, said Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim. He warned that such factions threaten national unity and must be rejected by all who seek peace. 'Praying for the destruction of fellow Muslims reflects a radical mindset that will ruin and divide the ummah. Clearly, this is a conduct of those who subscribe to the ideology of the Khawarij, perpetuating hatred in God's name for political gain,' he said in a post on X. The statement follows a recent rally where some participants, including opposition leaders, concluded with a prayer containing ill will towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Muhammad Kamil, who also heads PKR's youth wing, Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK), highlighted the misuse of religious symbols like the kopiah (skull caps) to manipulate public sentiment. 'The kopiah on one's head, which is meant to guide our conduct and behaviour, has sadly been reduced to a mere showpiece used to sway the minds of a confused and anxious society,' he added. He referenced the historical example of Abdul Rahman ibn Muljam, a devout man who assassinated Caliph Sayyidina Ali, believing himself more righteous. 'This is a lesson from history that we must fully comprehend,' he said. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Those who inherit the ideology and thinking of the Khawarij (extremists), and continue to incite hatred in the name of God for political gain, must be strongly condemned and firmly opposed by all quarters, said Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim.
