Erie coffee shops go cup-to-cup at Erie's Best Coffee competition

Yahoo24-02-2025

Everyone has a different preference when it comes to coffee, and on Sunday local coffee shops competed for the title of the best cup of joe in Erie.
Millions of people drink coffee every day, and on Sunday some coffee drinkers got a chance to support their favorite cup of coffee in the erie area.
For many people, coffee is just the beverage you drink in the morning… But for others, the rich, dark caffeinated drink is a way of life…
Sunday at the Zem Zem Shrine Club on West 38th Street, eight local coffee shops went head-to-head to prove they have the best cup of coffee in erie.
'There's just so much variety depending on where the coffee is from, so I don't think it's something that will go out of style, but you don't get tired of it,' said David Gonzalez, the event organizer.
Attendees tasted all sorts of coffee from cold brews to cappuccinos and then voted which business had the best.
A panel of celebrity judges also picked a 'Judges Choice' winner.
This year crowning a new coffee shop, legenderie, as the victor.
'The reason we have the best cup of coffee is probably because of the atmosphere we're in. I think that it's filled with love and we're a community and I think that makes the drinks better,' said Milla Trohoske, a barista at Legenderie.
Legenderie opened on Peach Street back in September, doubling as both a record store and coffee shop.
But other local coffee shops also came to play at sunday's competition.
We were there with Norman and Ryan, co-owners from Lucky Bean Coffee. They were voted the Best Cup of Coffee last year. I don't drink coffee too much, but I'm going to try it here to see what we think. That's good. What's in that?'
'It's got flavor notes of strawberry, honey and dark chocolate. It's a medium roast, very good for cold brew, espresso shots,' said Norman Stark, co-owner of Lucky Bean.
That blend of coffee ended up being voted as Erie's best, and the Lucky Bean coffee shop on West 26th Street will hold onto the crown for another year.
Stark said their coffee is ethically grown from volcanic soil in Columbia, but it's the people who work there that separates their coffee from the rest.
'I think what makes us unique is all our employees, baristas, managers, they're fully invested into our vision and long-term growth, and it makes them more willing to put more work in because they want to see that brand succeed,' Stark went on to say.
One employee said Lucky Bean isn't just a coffee, but rather a family. The money raised during today's event will benefit the Saint Martin Center on Parade Street.

Maja Stark still waiting for major win to make her 'start crying and sleeping a lot'

It hasn't sunk in yet for Maja Stark. Just a few short days removed from her life-changing victory at the 80th U.S. Women's Open, the 25-year-old reports that life still feels 'pretty normal,' but with more work. Advertisement 'So I'm just still waiting,' said Stark ahead of her debut in the ShopRite LPGA Classic. 'Obviously we've had a lot of fun and got to celebrate a little bit, but I'm still waiting for it to settle in, waiting for it to just make me crash and just, yeah, start crying and sleeping a lot. 'But I haven't been able to sleep really.' Stark, only the third Swede to win the title, said the celebrations didn't start in earnest until after she left Erin Hills, where she never made more than a bogey over the course of 72 grueling holes to win by two. 'Had the bottle the champagne in my room and I said to one of my friends, I've got one champagne bottle and two glasses. You want to come in and start celebrating?' said the affable Swede. Advertisement 'Then we went to the pub here with a couple players and caddies and friends and stuff.' Stark connected with Annika Sorenstam before she even left the 18th green on Sunday in Wisconsin. Tennis icon Billie Jean King sent a text message, and she thought it was cool that Justin Rose followed along on Sunday, tweeting at her mid-round. As of Wednesday, she had yet to get through all the notes. 'I think that people have been telling me to take a couple days off and take it slow,' said Stark. 'I tried that and I was bored as hell. So I just thought, no, I got to do what I usually do and still enjoy all of last week and everything that came with that.' Maja Stark holds the Harton S. Semple Trophy after her win at the 2025 U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills. On Monday morning, Stark did a full slate of media from her room at the Best Western before flying to Philadelphia for the ShopRite, a low-scoring sprint of a tournament at 54 holes. Advertisement At the Wednesday pro-am, Stark reports that she wasn't really locked in until they came to a hole where caddies could hit and her looper, Jeff Brighton, waged a bet. Stark promptly hit a 6-iron to 11 feet. U.S. Women's Open brought big payday to Maja Stark There was a point in Stark's career that she worried about money. Would she have enough to carry on? When Stark was asked about the $2.4 million winner's check last Sunday, she had no idea what she'd won. 'I'm lucky I've gotten to the point that's all secondary,' she said. During her pre-tournament press conference near Atlantic City, Stark was asked what it means that for the rest of her life, she'll be known as a U.S. Women's Open champion. She gave a thoughtful albeit unusual response. Advertisement 'I think that it's really weird,' said Stark. 'I think that it kind of puts like a separation now, like more between like you as a player and as a person, and I feel like I don't want anything to change, but it feels like it's going to change. 'So I'm just trying to mentally prepare for the fact that people are going to say – maybe going to say like that's the U.S. Women's Open champion, Maja Stark, and I'm just preparing to hear that instead of just, here is Maja Stark, she plays golf, you know.' Vision: Schitt's Creek Star Joins MCU Show, Character Has Connection to Iron Man

The upcoming MCU show has added a new cast member. Emily Hampshire is best known for playing Stevie Budd in Schitt's Creek, the CBC Television series that aired from 2015 to 2020 and also stars Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and Annie Murphy. She also has a leading role in Amazon Prime Video's The Rig, which has so far run for two seasons. Now, Hampshire is officially joining the MCU as she'll star opposite Paul Bettany in the forthcoming Vision show, which serves as a spin-off to Marvel's WandaVision. Per Deadline, Hampshire is believed to be playing 'the sophisticated artificial intelligence E.D.I.T.H. (Even Dead, I'm The Hero), Tony Stark's augmented reality security and defense system. In the MCU, E.D.I.T.H. was originally created by Stark and bequeathed to Peter Parker following Stark's death. It provides access to Stark Industries' global satellite network along with an arsenal of missiles and drones.' The E.D.I.T.H. character was originally voiced by Dawn Michelle King in Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Far From Home. During that movie, Peter briefly let Quentin Beck/Mysterio access E.D.I.T.H. before reclaiming the technology for himself; however, it was then confiscated by the United States Department of Damage Control. Whether or not Hampshire will physically appear in the show or is just voicing the character remains unclear at this time. In addition to Bettany and Hampshire, the cast of the Vision MCU show includes James Spader as Ultron, T'Nia Miller as Jocasta, Faran Tahir as Raza, Todd Stashwick, and Ruaridh Mollica. Plot details for the Marvel Television show remain under wraps at this time, though it will presumably follow the White Vision character who emerged at the end of WandaVision. A premiere date has not yet been set.

Cardinals Greats, Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina Named to The Athletic's All-Quarter Century Team

The first 25-years of this century has a number of sports publications reflecting back on someone of the greatest modern day competitors. Thursday, Jayson Stark of The Athletic released his MLB All-Quarter Century Team. Stark's team included nine hitters, five starting pitchers and one closer, and a pair of St. Louis Cardinals greats made the cut. Advertisement Playing first base on Stark's all-quarter century team is the legendary Albert Pujols, and behind the plate is the great Yadier Molina. Here's the full team: Pujols being the starting first baseman shouldn't come as a surprise to many. Stark claims that of all the decisions he had to make, this one was the easiest. "So why did I pick Albert? Oh, no particular reason … other than that he ranks first among this group in pretty much everything. We're talking over 700 homers and 3,300 hits, 101.3 WAR (according to Baseball Reference) and the most total bases in history (6,211) by anyone not named Henry Aaron." Advertisement "Want to argue that any of those other first basemen were greater? Sure. Go for it. But Pujols was the easiest pick, for me, on this whole ballot. #Legend," he wrote. Pujols spent the first 11 seasons of his 22-year career in St. Louis. He was a three-time MVP, 11-time all-star, two-time World Series champion and won rookie of the year in 2001. After spending 10 years with the Angels and one with the Dodgers, Pujols finished his career in St. Louis, where he became the fourth player ever to eclipse the 700 home run mark. Cardinals legends Albert Pujols and Yadier MolinaJeff Curry-Imagn Images With other strong candidates at the catcher position, such as Buster Posey and Joe Mauer, Stark's decision to select Molina wasn't quite as easy. Advertisement Stark says that he ran the catcher debate by a scout who used to play in the big leagues, and the scout didn't even hesitate to pick Molina. 'It's Yadi,' he said. 'It's got to be Yadi. End of story. I don't care about the numbers. Yadi has all the nuanced stuff you can't measure. Go look at all those Cardinals pitching staffs that got better when he was behind the plate. And the second he left, they have not been the same. So it's Yadi. It's got to be Yadi.' A ten-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion, Molina spent all 19 seasons of his career with the Cardinals. Molina may not have the offensive prowess of Mauer or Posey, but he still finished his career with over 2,100 hits and over 1,000 RBIs. With nine gold gloves and four platinum gloves, Molina is also widely considered to be the greatest defensive catcher of all time. Both Pujols and Molina will make their first appearance on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot in 2028.
