Kishore Kumar's son revealed that the late legend was asked to 'give something' to a government official.
The 71st National Film Awards were announced yesterday, August 1, and Bollywood legends Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji secured their first wins in over 30 years of being in the film industry. This fact has left many fans shocked. However, did you know that cinema stalwarts like Kishore Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand and Madhubala never won a National Award? In fact, Kishore Kumar was once asked to bribe someone in the ministry to bag a win.
In an earlier chat with Vickey Lalwani, Kishore Kumar's son, Amit Kumar, revealed that the late legend was once close to winning the National Award for Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein. Kishore Kumar played a serious role in the 1964 film opposite his son Amit Kumar. The film was a huge box office success and was even considered for the National Award. However, the film's road to achievement was blocked by a demand for a bribe by 'someone' in the ministry.
Amit Kumar revealed, 'He got a call from Delhi from someone in the Ministry. At that time, Haqeeqat, Dosti, and Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein were being considered (for the National Award). They told my father, 'If you do something, give something, then we can get you nominated.' My father was like, 'Why are you after my life? My film is a hit.'"
'The film ran for 23 weeks at Super Cinema. In Delhi-UP, the film was a silver jubilee. Then he sold the rights to a Tamil filmmaker. The remake was called Ramu. That won the National Award," Amit noted. Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein, an adaptation of the American film The Proud Rebel, was remade in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam due to its commercial success.
Kishore Kumar passed away on October 13, 1987, leaving behind a legacy that transcends generations. Kishore Kumar, an iconic figure in Indian cinema, left an indelible mark as a multifaceted genius—singer, actor, director, and composer. Known for his natural acting and effortless singing, his performances in films like Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Padosan (1968), and Half Ticket (1962) became legendary. Despite a stellar career, Kishore Kumar never won a National Award.

Mobile Cricket Game: ICC To Secure Players Rights Through Member Boards

Last Updated: ICC had launched an Expression of Interest to identify partners to produce a mobile cricket game. The International Cricket Council (ICC) will reportedly approach its members board to secure the rights of players for its ambitious mobile cricket game without involving involve the World Cricketers Association (WCA). Last month, the ICC had announced it has started the process to find potential partners to produce a 'world class" mobile cricket game. As per a report in Cricbuzz, the member boards were informed of the development during the ICC Annual Conference held in Singapore recently. 'A clear direction from the April (ICC Board meeting in Harare) meeting was that all players' rights for this project would be secured through the members. The ICC was not to contract player rights through a third party such as the World Cricketers Association," the publication quoted a note that was circulated among the members during the conference as saying. Additionally, the ICC is also aiming to find a solution to obtain the rights of retired stars – who are not contracted to their national boards anymore – owing to their immense popularity including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni among others. 'The aim is to have a preferred partner identified for approval at the October board meetings. (The ICC) management will be in touch with members shortly to formalise the licence of rights required for the mobile game. These agreements will need to be completed by October," reads the note. The newly appointed ICC Chairman reportedly feels that the cricket mobile game 'will be bigger than the movies." ICC Chairman Jay Shah had said, 'Cricket has one of the most passionate and diverse fanbases in global sport. This project represents a unique opportunity and step forward to reimagine how cricket is experienced and celebrated in the digital world. By bringing together the ICC and its Full Members, we are laying the foundation for a cricket game that engages the modern audience and reflects the global scale of our game." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vaibhavi Merchant wins National Award, says Dhindora Baje Re was always special

Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant was on her way to work in London when a journalist informed her about her winning the National Award. Her song 'Dhindora Baje Re' from 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' won the Best Choreography award at the 71st National Awards an exclusive conversation with India Today, she said, "It all feels so surreal right now. Because I am not in the country, I didn't know it was happening today. It's an emotional moment, but it has yet to sink in. I am soon going to be 50, and I think it's come as a wonderful birthday surprise."advertisementThis is her second honour after 'Dholi Taro' from 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', but the excitement remains the same. Merchant shared what the award means to her. She said, "It's infused a lot of life back into my work. I'll be honest, as an artist, I still look at every new project as my first one. I still get those goosebumps and the nervous energy. I still choreograph all my pieces with butterflies in my stomach."She added, "For me, entering that rehearsal hall is sacrosanct; it's my temple, the world I was born into. It's also the world that brought me up. Dance is something I have known ever since I was a child. Also, because I've been trained in Bharatnatyam, any piece that celebrates semi-classical or Indian forms, and is encouraged in the Hindi film industry, becomes special for me." The choreographer added that people are often surprised by how she can pull off a classical and a contemporary song like 'Besharam Rang' in the same year. She shared that she "now feels there's an instinctive switch in her brain, which helps her take on different genres at the same time."Merchant discussed in detail the song that brought this honour. She mentioned that 'Dhindora Baje Re' was an extremely important part in the narrative, and kind of lifts the film."It almost felt like a pre-climactic scene, a sequence. For me, it was very clear that I wanted this to become the biggest number in the film. It comes at a very crucial point. Tota Roy Choudhury and Ranveer Singh also have a dance sequence from 'Dola Re Dola' just before that. I remember it was another high to get them to do Kathak, and because I am a huge Saroj Khan ji fan, it was rather very fulfilling," she 49-year-old also spoke about her experience of working with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh. She said, "I also got to work with both my proteges, since I worked with Alia Bhatt and Ranveer in their first films. So for me to get both these artists to come and do the song was truly remarkable and special. It was my gift, my love for Karan. It's so much fun shooting with him, I would leave everything to be on Karan Johar's set any day."The choreographer added that every member of the film was a delight to work with. And while people keep talking about how the song was 'iconic', broke 'gender roles', Merchant shared that she doesn't work with such preconceived this happens later. It reaches legacy status much later when another generation that's waiting recognises it. Like I would watch a Saroj Khan or people prior to that generation and learn from them. So hopefully, we will also see those days someday," she added with a with the Best Choreography award, 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani' also bagged the award for Best Popular film for wholesome entertainment.- Ends
