Arizona Diamondbacks fighting their way through a rash of injuries

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been snakebit all season.
Injuries plagued the club in spring training and have continued to wreak havoc as the season reaches the midpoint, leaving manager Torey Lovullo searching for answers as he tries to cobble together a daily lineup.
'I have not seen anything like this,' Lovullo said from Chicago this week. 'Usually, you have a bad week or a bad month, or two guys in a 30-day period of time that will go down, but it's just been one after another. It's frustrating. I feel for the players. I feel for this team.'
It's been painful.
Left-hander Corbin Burnes, signed to a $210 million, six-year deal in January, lasted 11 starts before going down with a season-ending elbow injury. He followed fellow starter Jordan Montgomery and proceeded key reliever Justin Martinez in needing Tommy John surgery.
Reliever A.J. Puk also needs elbow surgery, to repair his left ulnar collateral ligament, a procedure that could turn into Tommy John. Pitchers Tommy Henry, Blake Walston and Christian Montes de Oca also are out for the season.
Catcher Gabriel Moreno has been out with a broken finger after being hit by a foul ball on June 15. Backup catcher Adrian Del Castillo has dealt with shoulder and back issues, spoiling his chance to move up from Triple-A Reno to replace Moreno.
The hits kept coming this week.
Arizona placed All Star outfielder Corbin Carroll on the injured list with a chip fracture in his left wrist before Tuesday's game against the White Sox, then watched infielder Ildemaro Vargas go down with a broken foot after being hit by a pitch in the second inning. Carroll has been out since being hit by a pitch on June 18.
Third baseman Eugenio Suárez has been out of the lineup since being hit on the hand by a pitch on Monday. First baseman Josh Naylor also was injured on Monday, straining his right shoulder on an awkward swing, but returned to the lineup on Wednesday.
'It's part of the game, but we've taken on a lot, there's no denying that,' Lovullo said. 'A lot of teams have. I don't want anybody to feel sorry for us. But it's our turn to go out there and figure out how to get the job done, and that's where my main focus is right now.'
The Diamondbacks have managed to keep their focus during the rash of injuries.

With Tuesday's 4-1 win over the White Sox, Arizona has won 10 of 14 to move back into the NL wild card picture. The Diamondbacks aren't out of the NL West race, either, entering Wednesday's game 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
'We've just got to push through it,' Arizona outfielder Alek Thomas said. 'The vibe in the clubhouse, are still high. We still come every day to the field with our chin up and smiles on our faces.'
Some of those smiles are more like grimaces, but the Diamondbacks have found a way to grit their way through.

Lenyn Sosa homers twice to lead White Sox past Diamondbacks

CHICAGO (AP) — Lenyn Sosa went deep twice for his first career multi-homer game and finished with a career-high four RBIs to lead the Chicago White Sox past the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-3 on Wednesday. Andrew Benintendi added a solo shot and rookie catcher Kyle Teel had three hits with an RBI and two runs scored to help last-place Chicago avoid a sweep. Mike Tauchman and Sosa finished with three hits as the White Sox won for just the third time in 14 games. Arizona's Josh Naylor hit his 10th homer among two hits. White Sox rookie starter Sean Burke (4-7) allowed two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out seven. Three relievers yielded one unearned run. Zac Gallen (5-9) permitted five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Arizona's ace the past three seasons, the right-hander is 2-5 with a 6.97 ERA in his last nine starts. BREWERS 4, PIRATES 2 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Making his third major league start, Jacob Misiorowski threw five shutout innings and Milwaukee earned a victory against Pittsburgh and Paul Skenes. Misiorowski (3-0) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out eight and threw 74 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.13 for the Brewers, who took two of three in the series and climbed a season-high nine games over .500. Misiorowski, 23, entered the game having given up one hit and two runs in 11 innings over his first two outings since being promoted from Triple-A Nashville on June 12. Skenes, also 23 and the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and a starter in the 2024 All-Star Game, allowed all four runs in the second inning. Skenes (4-7) gave up four hits with two walks and four strikeouts and threw 78 pitches for the Pirates. PADRES 1, NATIONALS 0 SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta shut down Washington through seven brilliant innings, including matching his season high with 10 strikeouts, and San Diego Padres beat the Nationals to take two of three in the series. Pivetta (8-2) allowed just three baserunners, all on singles, and none reached scoring position. Pivetta picked off Daylen Lile after he hit a leadoff single in the third. Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon each pitched a perfect inning, with Morejon getting his second save. Luis Arraez, batting leadoff for just the second time this season, had three singles and drove in the game's only run. The three-time batting champion singled to center off former Padres left-hander MacKenzie Gore (3-8) with two outs in the second to bring in Tyler Wade. Elias Díaz tried to score from second but was thrown out by center fielder Jacob Young. The second was the only bad inning for Gore, who was one of six players sent to Washington in the blockbuster trade that brought Juan Soto to San Diego on Aug. 2, 2022. He opened the inning with consecutive strikeouts before walking Wade and allowing singles to Díaz and Arraez. ANGELS 5, RED SOX 2 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Yusei Kikuchi struck out a season-high 12 in seven innings, Jo Adell and Travis d'Arnaud hit solo homers and RBI singles, and Los Angeles beat Boston to complete a three-game sweep. Kikuchi (3-6) allowed up two hits, walked one and threw 31 pitches in a shaky first inning when the Red Sox took advantage of shortstop Scott Kingery's fielding error and scored two unearned runs on Trevor Story's two-out, single with the bases loaded. The 34-year-old Japanese left-hander recovered and limited Boston to one hit with no walks over the next six innings. Kikuchi struck out the side in the second and fifth innings and retired the Red Sox in order in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Kikuchi induced 20 swinging strikes and threw 74 pitches over the final six innings. Ryan Zeferjahn worked a scoreless eighth and ninth for his second save as the Angels (40-40) reached .500 for the first time since May 23. Adell and d'Arnaud homered off Red Sox starter Richard Fitts on consecutive pitches in the fourth for a 2-all tie. Adell's 433-foot shot was his 17th homer of the season and 10th in June. RANGERS 7, ORIOLES 0 BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore's Colton Cowser singled to lead off the eighth inning Wednesday night, breaking up Texas right-hander Jacob deGrom's no-hit bid. The 37-year-old deGrom had a perfect game going through six innings before walking designated hitter Sam Haggerty and left fielder Alejandro Osuna in the seventh and allowing Cowser's hard hit grounder to right field at the start of the eighth inning. DeGrom struck out seven. The two-time Cy Young Award winner threw threw 59 strikes and 89 pitches overall before being lifted after allowing his first hit. He has a 7-2 record. The Orioles went hitless for six innings on Tuesday night against Texas left-hander Jacob Latz before singling in the seventh. Baltimore also went hitless for seven innings against Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt on Saturday before Gary Sánchez finally singled in the eighth off reliever JT Brubaker. Texas scored once in the second inning, twice in the fourth, three times in the third and added a run in the sixth. The Rangers scored four earned runs off Baltimore starter Brandon Young and three earned runs off reliever Scott Blewett. ATHLETICS 3, TIGERS 0 DETROIT (AP) — Jacob Lopez pitched seven innings and Nick Kurtz hit a three-run homer to help the Athletics beat Detroit. Lopez (2-4) gave up three hits and a walk, striking out six to improve to 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in his last four starts. Jack Flaherty (5-9) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks in six innings. Flaherty struck out seven. Flaherty walked two batters in the third before Kurtz hit a changeup to the top of the first row of shrubs above the 412-foot sign. The Tigers didn't get a runner in scoring position until Jahmai Jones doubled with two out in the sixth. Lopez got Riley Greene to ground out to end the inning. The Athletics got two singles to start the eighth, putting runners on the corners, but Matt Gage and Dylan Smith escaped the inning. Michael Kelly pitched the eighth, aided by running catches by Tyler Soderstrom in left and Denzel Clarke in center. Mason Miller threw a perfect ninth for his 15th save. YANKEES 7, REDS 1 CINCINNATI (AP) — Max Fried became this season's first 10-game winner, Jasson Domínguez and Trent Grisham had four hits apiece and New York defeated Cincinnati to avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series. Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for the Yankees (46-34), who remained one game in front of Tampa Bay in the AL East. Elly De La Cruz had two hits for the Reds. Fried (10-2) went seven innings and allowed an unearned run, four hits and seven strikeouts. The left-hander is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. Domínguez and Grisham each had two doubles. The four hits were a career high for Domínguez while it was the third time Grisham has had at least four hits in his seven-year career. RAYS 3, ROYALS 0 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings of two-hit ball, Tampa Bay scored three times in the second on an array of singles and bunts, and the Rays held on the rest of the way to beat Kansas City. Rasmussen (7-5) struck out five and walked two before turning it over to the Tampa Bay bullpen on a hot, humid night. Three relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk before Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 14th save. The Rays (45-35) have won five straight on the road, nine of their last 12 overall and are a season-best 10 games over .500. José Caballero had an RBI bunt single and Danny Jansen laid down a sacrifice bunt against Michael Wacha during the decisive second for Tampa Bay. Christopher Morel, Josh Lowe and Chandler Simpson had singles in the inning. Other than that, Wacha (4-7) was tough on the Rays. He went six innings and struck out nine while walking just one. GUARDIANS 5, BLUE JAYS 4, 10 INNINGS CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning and Cleveland beat Toronto in the second start of the season for the Blue Jays' Max Scherzer. Ramírez, who singled off Scherzer to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead in the first, hit a line drive to left field off Mason Fluharty (3-2) with the bases loaded. Scherzer allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in five innings, throwing 83 pitches and striking out four in his first start since March 29 when he hurt his right thumb and landed on the injured list. Nic Enright (1-0) left two runners on in the 10th for the win. Gavin Williams started and allowed three runs on six hits in five innings. METS 7, BRAVES 3 NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Soto homered twice and New York finally got some production from the bottom of the lineup, beating Atlanta for their first victory over their NL East rivals in six meetings this season. No. 8 batter Ronny Mauricio also went deep and finished with three hits as New York won for only the second time in 12 games. Center fielder Jeff McNeil robbed Marcell Ozuna of a two-run homer in the first inning. Clay Holmes (8-4) pitched around four walks in five innings after issuing a career-high six free passes during a loss at Atlanta last week. The converted reliever allowed only a solo homer by rookie Drake Baldwin in the fourth. One night after blowing a 3-0 lead, the Mets' bullpen followed Holmes with three scoreless innings. Jonathan Pintaro, making his major league debut, gave up a two-run single to Ronald Acuña Jr. in the ninth before Edwin Díaz retired Ozuna with two on for his 16th save in 17 opportunities. Injury-depleted Diamondbacks place Ildemaro Vargas on IL, give James McCann first start this season

CHICAGO (AP) — The injury-depleted Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day injured list with a right foot fracture before Wednesday's series final against the Chicago White Sox. Vargas suffered a broken fifth metatarsal when he was hit by a pitch from Mike Vasil in the second inning of Arizona's 4-1 win Tuesday night. He is batting .286 with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games. Catcher James McCann was playing in his first major league game of the season Wednesday, starting behind the plate. The 35-year-old signed with Arizona on Monday following his release from the Atlanta Braves. McCann signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs. McCann, who is in his 12th season in the majors, was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18) and RBIs (60). He has a .241 career batting average with 92 homers and 373 RBIs in 917 games with the Tigers, White Sox, Mets and Orioles. 'I'm glad he's here,' manager Torey Lovullo said. 'I've admired him from across the field through a couple of his organizations.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The Diamondbacks remain without center fielder Corbin Carroll. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year went on the injured list retroactive to Saturday with a chip fracture in his left wrist, and a timeline for his return is unknown. Carroll hasn't played since a pitch hit him in the left hand last Wednesday in Toronto. Infielder Eugenio Suarez was still out the lineup Wednesday after being hit on the hand by a pitch from Shane Smith on Monday. First baseman Josh Naylor returned after injuring his shoulder on a swing Monday and sitting out Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:
