Arizona Diamondbacks fighting their way through a rash of injuries
The Arizona Diamondbacks have been snakebit all season.
Injuries plagued the club in spring training and have continued to wreak havoc as the season reaches the midpoint, leaving manager Torey Lovullo searching for answers as he tries to cobble together a daily lineup.
'I have not seen anything like this,' Lovullo said from Chicago this week. 'Usually, you have a bad week or a bad month, or two guys in a 30-day period of time that will go down, but it's just been one after another. It's frustrating. I feel for the players. I feel for this team.'
It's been painful.
Left-hander Corbin Burnes, signed to a $210 million, six-year deal in January, lasted 11 starts before going down with a season-ending elbow injury. He followed fellow starter Jordan Montgomery and proceeded key reliever Justin Martinez in needing Tommy John surgery.
Reliever A.J. Puk also needs elbow surgery, to repair his left ulnar collateral ligament, a procedure that could turn into Tommy John. Pitchers Tommy Henry, Blake Walston and Christian Montes de Oca also are out for the season.
Catcher Gabriel Moreno has been out with a broken finger after being hit by a foul ball on June 15. Backup catcher Adrian Del Castillo has dealt with shoulder and back issues, spoiling his chance to move up from Triple-A Reno to replace Moreno.
The hits kept coming this week.
Arizona placed All Star outfielder Corbin Carroll on the injured list with a chip fracture in his left wrist before Tuesday's game against the White Sox, then watched infielder Ildemaro Vargas go down with a broken foot after being hit by a pitch in the second inning. Carroll has been out since being hit by a pitch on June 18.
Third baseman Eugenio Suárez has been out of the lineup since being hit on the hand by a pitch on Monday. First baseman Josh Naylor also was injured on Monday, straining his right shoulder on an awkward swing, but returned to the lineup on Wednesday.
'It's part of the game, but we've taken on a lot, there's no denying that,' Lovullo said. 'A lot of teams have. I don't want anybody to feel sorry for us. But it's our turn to go out there and figure out how to get the job done, and that's where my main focus is right now.'
The Diamondbacks have managed to keep their focus during the rash of injuries.

With Tuesday's 4-1 win over the White Sox, Arizona has won 10 of 14 to move back into the NL wild card picture. The Diamondbacks aren't out of the NL West race, either, entering Wednesday's game 2 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
'We've just got to push through it,' Arizona outfielder Alek Thomas said. 'The vibe in the clubhouse, are still high. We still come every day to the field with our chin up and smiles on our faces.'
Some of those smiles are more like grimaces, but the Diamondbacks have found a way to grit their way through.

BREWERS 4, PIRATES 2 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Making his third major league start, Jacob Misiorowski threw five shutout innings and Milwaukee earned a victory against Pittsburgh and Paul Skenes. Misiorowski (3-0) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out eight and threw 74 pitches and lowered his ERA to 1.13 for the Brewers, who took two of three in the series and climbed a season-high nine games over .500. Misiorowski, 23, entered the game having given up one hit and two runs in 11 innings over his first two outings since being promoted from Triple-A Nashville on June 12. Skenes, also 23 and the reigning NL Rookie of the Year and a starter in the 2024 All-Star Game, allowed all four runs in the second inning. Skenes (4-7) gave up four hits with two walks and four strikeouts and threw 78 pitches for the Pirates. PADRES 1, NATIONALS 0 SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta shut down Washington through seven brilliant innings, including matching his season high with 10 strikeouts, and San Diego Padres beat the Nationals to take two of three in the series. Pivetta (8-2) allowed just three baserunners, all on singles, and none reached scoring position. Pivetta picked off Daylen Lile after he hit a leadoff single in the third. Jeremiah Estrada and Adrian Morejon each pitched a perfect inning, with Morejon getting his second save. Luis Arraez, batting leadoff for just the second time this season, had three singles and drove in the game's only run. The three-time batting champion singled to center off former Padres left-hander MacKenzie Gore (3-8) with two outs in the second to bring in Tyler Wade. Elias Díaz tried to score from second but was thrown out by center fielder Jacob Young. The second was the only bad inning for Gore, who was one of six players sent to Washington in the blockbuster trade that brought Juan Soto to San Diego on Aug. 2, 2022. RAYS 3, ROYALS 0 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Drew Rasmussen tossed five innings of two-hit ball, Tampa Bay scored three times in the second on an array of singles and bunts, and the Rays held on the rest of the way to beat Kansas City. Rasmussen (7-5) struck out five and walked two before turning it over to the Tampa Bay bullpen on a hot, humid night. Three relievers combined to allow one hit and one walk before Pete Fairbanks handled the ninth for his 14th save. Injury-depleted Diamondbacks place Ildemaro Vargas on IL, give James McCann first start this season
CHICAGO (AP) — The injury-depleted Arizona Diamondbacks recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno and placed infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day injured list with a right foot fracture before Wednesday's series final against the Chicago White Sox. Vargas suffered a broken fifth metatarsal when he was hit by a pitch from Mike Vasil in the second inning of Arizona's 4-1 win Tuesday night. He is batting .286 with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games. Catcher James McCann was playing in his first major league game of the season Wednesday, starting behind the plate. The 35-year-old signed with Arizona on Monday following his release from the Atlanta Braves. McCann signed a minor league deal with the Braves on April 8 and was released Sunday. Over 41 games with Triple-A Gwinnett, he hit .297 with six homers and 30 RBIs. McCann, who is in his 12th season in the majors, was selected to the 2019 All-Star Game. That season with the White Sox, he set career highs in hits (120), homers (18) and RBIs (60). He has a .241 career batting average with 92 homers and 373 RBIs in 917 games with the Tigers, White Sox, Mets and Orioles. 'I'm glad he's here,' manager Torey Lovullo said.
