'We conducted raids on shops located near educational institutions and seized cigarettes. Cigarettes and prohibited material should not be sold within 100 metres from the institution,' the SP said.
Meanwhile, in the NTR Commissionerate, police teams led by Police Commissioner S.V. Raja Sekhara Babu conducted raids in the shops to check sale of gutkha, cigarettes and other sedatives. Deputy Commissioners of Police K.M. Maheshwara Raju and K.G.V. Saritha and ACPs searched the shops at various locations in Vijayawada and the neighbouring places, where schools and colleges were located.
Stern action would be taken against those who sell cigarettes and other prohibited material to students, the Police Commissioner warned.

He said after the death of Varun Kumar (45) in a hospital in Delhi, his family members including his wife Neetu alias Shweta (36) and his elder sister Baby Kumari (45) were en route to Begusarai with the body. Karnataka govt withdraws compulsory leave imposed on IPS officer Ramachandra Rao
Last Updated: Bengaluru, Aug 11 (PTI) The Karnataka government on Monday appointed senior IPS officer K Ramachandra Rao as the DGP for Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, withdrawing the compulsory leave imposed on him following the arrest of his stepdaughter and actress Ranya Rao in connection with a gold smuggling case. Prior to this new role, he served as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation. 'The order of compulsory leave with respect to Dr K Ramachandra Rao, IPS (KN 1993) is hereby withdrawn and the officer is posted with immediate effect and until further orders as Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in the upgraded vacant post," a government order said. The post of Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement is declared equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Director General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Special Units & Economic offences, Bengaluru under Rule 12 of IPS (Pay) Rules 2016 as included in Schedule Il of the said rule, it said. Rao was sent on compulsory leave in March. Ranya Rao (34) was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 3 upon her arrival at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport from Dubai, and gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore were seized from her. The next day, the DRI said it seized gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and cash amounting to Rs 2.67 from her residence in Bengaluru. Ranya Rao was accused of misusing police escorts, provided to her in violation of rules, allegedly to evade Custom checks and checkout of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). The Karnataka government had formed a committee to probe the role of Ramachandra Rao, if any, in the alleged gold smuggling activity of his step daughter. He had appeared before the Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta-led committee for questioning. 2 men arrested for abducting 27-year-old man, demanding Rs 1 lakh ransom from kin
Mumbai: Two men were arrested by Samta Nagar Police after they abducted a 27-year-old man from Kandivali, assaulted him and demanded a ransom of Rs 1 lakh from his family. The victim, Shubham Sahu, was rescued by the police and his health is stable. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident occurred on Aug 9 when Sahu, a medical delivery person by profession, was speaking to his friend over the phone while walking down the street. He uttered an expletive over the phone. A few men were passing by and mistakenly presumed that Sahu had verbally abused them. A scuffle broke out and Sahu was assaulted. The accused abducted Sahu and took him to Poisar, Kandivali. He was confined at the residence of one Yamesh Darekar at Poisar. The accused then called up Sahu's wife and lied that he had been abducted as he had harassed a girl known to them. They demanded a ransom of Rs 1 lakh. Sahu's wife demanded to see her husband and went to Poisar where she was threatened and verbally abused by the accused. Terrified, she rushed home and confided in her siblings. They approached the Samta Nagar police station and registered a complaint where they said that seven to eight persons had abducted Sahu. A team supervised by DCP Mahesh Chimte and senior inspector Jaywant Shinde, and comprising investigating officer Sagar Devrukhar rescued Sahu. They arrested two of the accused and are looking for their accomplices.
