Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) headquarters in Bukit Jalil, Anwar said he hopes the development of the new facility will spur the country to get its first Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles. Anwar said the government has been supporting sports in the country through efforts from Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, as well as OCM president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria. "I think the government, through the Youth and Sports Ministry, has been very proactive and supportive. You have a good minister who has been harassing me for more money and more funds "With Hannah and Norza, everyone is now waiting and we expect one gold medal at least, otherwise they'll be in trouble," said Anwar in jest at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday. Anwar added that the new headquarters comes as a need to provide the 58 National Sports Associations (NSA) a place to gather and share knowledge to further enhance sports performance. Expected to cost RM103mil in total, the new Olympic House will be constructed in Bukit Jalil within the Kuala Lumpur Sports City, with the new building located next to the National Hockey Stadium. Norza had previously said that the main building is targeted to be done before the 2027 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games, but Anwar hopes the project can be completed ahead of its intended schedule. Meanwhile, Anwar also stressed the importance of sportsmanship, stressing that there is no room for hooliganism in sports at any level, particularly in football. "As I always tell my grandchildren in any sports they are involved in, especially when they get upset, that it's not the spirit. "You must try and excel to win, but must accept the fact that the best athlete will win and that's the spirit of sportsmanship. "That is why we take any issue of hooliganism or violence in sports seriously, particularly in football in this country. Everyone supports their team or their state, but that does not allow them to create chaos," he said. The new Olympic House is inspired by the one in Lausanne, Switzerland, and will replace OCM's current base at Jalan Hang Jebat.

No place for hooliganism, violence in sports, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that there is no room for hooliganism or violence in sports, particularly football, as such behaviour goes against the spirit of sportsmanship. The Prime Minister said sports should serve as a unifying force among Malaysians of all backgrounds and must not be tainted by unruly or divisive conduct. "Everyone supports their team or their state or their province, but that does not allow them to create chaos and tolerate hooliganism. So we'll make a difference. Don't import that culture of hooliganism in sports as you read and see and watch on television from the experience of other countries," he said in a speech during the groundbreaking ceremony of Olympic House here, Thursday (Aug 7). Also present was Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Anwar said while passion in sports was natural, it should not be used to justify behaviour that contradicted the values of sportsmanship. "People cry when they win and they cry when they lose. You know, which means you cannot deny the passion. But it does not warrant them to take actions which run contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship," he said. He added that greater tolerance was needed, as "intolerance runs contrary to the very spirit of sports - which is about bringing people together, embracing differences, and sharing a deep passion." Anwar also highlighted the unique role of sportsmanship in uniting Malaysians across racial lines, noting that such values were often absent in politics. "There's no language in politics for sportsmanship. Politics is where you kill one another - I mean, not literally, hopefully. But only in sports, not in culture, not in the arts, not in economic rivalry. "But in sports, there is this term called sportsmanship, which essentially means you must work hard, try to excel and win - but also accept that the best man, woman, or team will win. And that is the spirit of sportsmanship," he said. Reflecting on Malaysia's past, which was at times marked by racial antagonism, Anwar recalled how sports like football and badminton served as powerful unifying forces during those difficult periods. "It doesn't matter whether he's Malay, Chinese, Dayak or Indian - we consider them all Malaysian. And that's what I feel we need to promote. But of course, we also need to excel. "So everybody's waiting - under Hannah and now with Norza (Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria) - where we expect at least one gold medal from the Olympics. Otherwise, they'll be in trouble," he said jokingly. Sharing a personal anecdote, Anwar said he often advised his grandchildren, who sometimes got upset after losing in games like chess or football. "I said, I told them that's not the spirit. The spirit of course, is to win, but the sportsmanship, the the term sportsmanship is such a value-laden term. BYD Zhengzhou's maiden voyage to Malaysia arrives with 7,000 EVs
KUALA LUMPUR: BYD Malaysia and its official distributor Sime Motors have announced the arrival of BYD Zhengzhou, a dedicated carrier vessel delivering fully-built EVs directly to Malaysian shores. The BYD-owned roll-on/roll-off (RORO) vessel with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, recently docked at North Port in Port Klang, making its first journey to Southeast Asia. Aside from Malaysia, it said the vessel will deliver EVs to the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore before heading to Thailand and returning to China. "BYD Zhengzhou is the seventh vessel in a fleet of purpose-built carriers, demonstrating BYD's robust supply chain and logistics readiness to meet the rising demand for EV. "The vessels are part of the BYD's expanding export strategies and underscore its commitment to Malaysia as a key market in the region," it said. Sime Motors managing director of Southeast Asia Jeffrey Gan said with the enhanced regional supply chain provided by the BYD carrier vessel, the company is now assured of shorter delivery times. This also prepares the company to support greater volumes ahead as it accelerates EV adoption in Malaysia through a dynamic ecosystem that spans retail, after-sales and customer education. "This is just the beginning, with more breakthrough innovations and strategic developments ahead," he said. By operating its own shipping fleet, BYD gains greater control over an integral aspect of the EV supply chain, especially as China continues to lead in EV exports worldwide. "The carrier vessel plays a key role in heightening BYD's global ambition and reinforces our ties to Malaysia which we view as instrumental to our growth in Asia Pacific. "Built to enhance delivery capabilities, the BYD Zhengzhou ensures faster and more reliable deliveries directly to our customers here," said BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd managing director Eagle Zhao. The vessel's RORO method, where vehicles are driven directly on and off the vessel, offers substantial time and cost advantages compared with traditional container shipping. As a result of more efficient logistics, BYD Malaysia and Sime Motors are strengthening their partnership, supported by more than 35 BYD outlets nationwide and targeted to have 60 BYD outlets by end of year 2026. This also helps realise their shared goal of delivering EVs to Malaysians at a quicker and more reliable pace.
