Washington, Hawaii Among US States Bracing For Tsunami Impact: Check Advisories & ETA
A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia's far eastern coast triggered a tsunami in the Pacific region, with alerts sounded in various parts of the world, including Japan and the US.
While the tsunami, as high as 60 centimeters, struck Hamanaka town in northern Hokkaido and Kuji port in Iwate on Japan's main island, it is expected to make a landfall in the US in the next nearly 3 hours.
Alaska, Hawaii, and the entire US West Coast, including Washington state, are bracing for impact.
US President Donald Trump sent out a message to the citizens and said that a tsunami watch is in effect.
'Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way. Please visit tsunami.gov/ for the latest information. STAY STRONG AND STAY SAFE!" he posted on Truth Social.
The initial tsunami waves have already reached Alaska's western Aleutian Islands. In Kodiak, Alaska, the high waves are expected around 12.20 ET, whereas in southeast Alaska, it is likely to arrive between 12:45 am and 1:55 am ET.
The expected arrival time of the tsunami in Hawaii, where sirens have been going off, is around 1.15 am ET.
Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said that the authorities expect 'significant damage along the coastlines".
'We pray that we don't lose any of our loved ones. That's why we have to be very safe," the agency said.
Emergency shelters in Hawaii County have already opened or are in the process of opening.
Washington and Oregon – both on the US West Coast — have also been put on alert. The arrival time of the tsunami is estimated between 2:35 am and 2:55 am ET.

Ready To Fly Abroad? Here's Your Essential Travel Paperwork List
Last Updated: Before flying abroad, make sure all your travel documents are in order to save yourself from the last-minute stress and chaos. Planning an international vacation is exciting, but packing your bags isn't the only thing to focus on. One missing document can delay or even ruin your plans. That is why it is important to double-check all your travel paperwork before you leave. Here is a simple checklist to make sure you are ready and stress-free when you head to the airport. Passport and Visa: You can't leave the country without a passport. Make sure it is valid for at least six months beyond your return date; many countries won't let you in otherwise. Visas depend on your destination: some offer visa-on-arrival, some need e-visas, and others require you to apply in advance. Always check your destination's visa rules and apply early, as it may take time to get approved. Flight Tickets and Hotel Bookings: Keep your flight tickets and hotel confirmations handy, both in print and digital form. Some countries may ask for these at immigration, and it helps to have backups in case of no internet. Photo ID Proof: Carry a government-issued ID like your Aadhaar card or driver's license. These may be needed for hotel stays or emergencies. Keep originals, photocopies, and also store digital versions safely on your phone or cloud. Activity & Event Tickets: If you have pre-booked tours or events, save the tickets in your phone and carry printouts too. Some places only allow entry with bookings, so don't take chances. Emergency Contacts and Medical Info: List important numbers, including your embassy, in case of emergencies. If you are on medication, bring your prescriptions and a doctor's note, especially for special medicines or equipment. Local Currency: Don't rely only on cards or digital payments. Carry some cash in the local currency for small expenses like taxis, tips, or local shops. Exchanging money before your trip often gets you better rates. view comments First Published: August 03, 2025, 10:16 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Indigo Airlines on Saturday announced operations for all its flights to and from Tuticorin from the New Terminal building of the Tuticorin airport from August 3. In a post on social media X, the airlines appealed to all passengers to update their contact details in order to receive timely notifications and monitor their flight status for a well-prepared journey. 'Travel Advisory: Tuticorin Terminal Update Effective 03 August 2025, all IndiGo flights to/from Tuticorin (TCR) will operate from the New Terminal Building, offering a refreshed and enhanced airport experience for our customers. 'We encourage you to update your contact details to receive timely notifications and to monitor your flight status for a smooth and well-prepared journey. Thank you for choosing to fly with us," the post read. A day earlier, InterGlobe Aviation Limited, operating the airlines, announced a consolidated net profit of Rs 2,176 crore during the first quarter of 2025-26, despite a turbulent operating environment influenced by geopolitical tensions, airspace restrictions, and a tragic aviation accident in Ahmedabad. The carrier registered about 12 per cent year-on-year growth in passenger volumes, carrying 3.1 crore passengers during the April-June 2025 quarter, showcasing resilient demand even as yields declined by 5 per cent to Rs 4.98 per km and load factor dipped by 2.1 points to 84.6 per cent. Revenue from operations rose 4.7 per cent to Rs 20,496 crore. However, the airline's profit after tax dropped 20.2 per cent from Rs 2,729 crore in Q1 2024-25. Pieter Elbers, CEO, said, 'The June quarter was shaped by significant external challenges that created headwinds for the entire aviation sector. Despite these industry-wide disruptions, we reported a net profit of Rs 21,763 million with a net profit margin of around 11 per cent for the quarter ended June 2025." 'While the revenue environment saw moderation, demand for air travel held strong as we served more than 31 million passengers during the quarter, reflecting a growth of around 12 per cent on a year-over-year basis," Elbers added.
