
5 SoCal chefs, service professional and restaurants make 2025 James Beard Awards finalists
The 2025 James Beard restaurant and chef award nominees were announced this week, and a handful of the best in the nation are in Los Angeles and Orange County.
Often referred to as "the Oscars of food," the winners will be revealed at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony on June 16 in Chicago.
Long Beach's Gusto Bread was nominated in the Outstanding Bakery category, meeting the high mark of "a baker of breads, pastries, or desserts that demonstrates consistent excellence in food, atmosphere, hospitality, and operations."
In the Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, Strong Water in Anaheim made the nominated list of five, demonstrating "exceptional care and skill in the pairing of wine and other beverages with food," among other attributes.
Best Chef: California nominations included Jon Yao, of Kato Los Angeles and Daniel Castillo of Heritage Barbecue in San Juan Capistrano. Tobin Shea, at Redbird Los Angeles, was one of five people nominated for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service.
Established in 1990, with the first awards given in 1991, the James Beard Awards are one of the most prestigious culinary honors in the nation.

Capitol Hill steakhouse to temporarily close while owner shuts down multiple café locations
This story was originally published on A collection of restaurants and eateries run by James Beard Award-winning Seattle chef Renee Erickson is set to close, with some locations closing either temporarily or permanently. Bateau, a contemporary steakhouse, and Boat Bar, a French-inspired oyster bar, are shutting down temporarily on June 19. Both restaurants are expected to reopen in the next three to six months. 'We're incredibly proud of what Bateau and Boat Bar have brought to Seattle's dining scene,' Erickson said in a prepared statement. 'This closure will allow us the time and space to refresh and retool these restaurants after a long 10 years, so they can evolve and continue to inspire.' However, Beataeu's next-door neighbor, The General Porpoise café, also owned and operated by Erickson, is set to close permanently in order to be converted into a private dining room. The General Porpoise location in Laurelhurst is also closing permanently by June 24. These restaurants fall under the umbrella of Sea Creatures Restaurants, a network of eateries locally owned and operated by Erickson and partners. Sea Creatures Restaurants also owns Willmott's Ghost, The Whale Wins, The Walrus and the Carpenter, Barnacle Bar, Deep Dive, Westward, and Lioness. The closures, both permanent and temporary, came after a unionization effort led by some Sea Creatures employees earlier this year, according to The Seattle Times. 'We are comfortable with the union,' Sea Creatures Restaurants co-owner Jeremy Price told The Seattle Times. 'That's an employee's right, and we are all good with that.' Erickson and Price's goal is to relocate all doughnut shop employees working at the now-permanently closed General Porpoise cafés to the remaining locations.

7 Unexpected Regions Making Standout Rosé Wine
Bottles from unexpected regions are reshaping what rosé can taste like and where it's made. getty Rosé wine has long been linked to specific places—Italy, Spain, California and, of course, Provence in the South of France. These are the regions that shaped the category, where often pale, dry rosés have become shorthand for summer. Each year, rosé accounts for about 9% of global wine production, or 2.3 billion liters, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine. France leads with 805 million liters—45% of that from Provence—followed by Spain at 460 million and the United States at 230 million. But beyond those familiar names, winemakers elsewhere are rethinking what rosé can be. In some cases, these are younger wine regions developing their own approach to style and production. In others, the history is far older, but rosé is only now gaining attention. What connects them is not a shared look or flavor, but a move away from formula. These wines are often deeper in color, more structured and less tied to expectations shaped by branding or climate. The grapes vary, as do the winemaking methods. Some producers are farming organically or working at a smaller scale. Others are experimenting with blends, skin contact or unfiltered bottlings. Rosé remains a category with few rules, which has made it especially open to change. That flexibility, combined with growing demand outside traditional markets, has created space for producers in places not usually associated with the style. The results can be surprising—wines that are drier, more savory or more intense than their better-known counterparts. As the category continues to expand, so do the regions making a case for their place in it. These seven are not yet widely recognized for rosé, but the bottles coming out of them suggest that may not be true for long. Canelones, Uruguay getty Canelones, just north of Montevideo, has a cool maritime influence that works well for rosé production. Wines from this region are often made with pinot noir, cabernet franc or tannat, and tend to have savory depth, good acidity and mineral notes. Uruguay's small-scale producers focus on balance and restraint over sweetness. Goriška Brda, Slovenia getty Near the Italian border, Goriška Brda is known for small plots and hand-harvested grapes. Merlot and refošk rosés from this area often show wild strawberry and pomegranate with an herbal finish. The region's alpine air and limestone soil contribute to a crisp, layered style that stands apart from more common rosé profiles. Wines are typically pale to medium pink, with flavors of red cherry, earth and a hint of salt from nearby coastal breezes. Greece showed renewed growth in rosé wine consumption in 2022 after previous declines, part of a broader trend toward quality-driven styles. 'I could not be happier' - Cumbrian castle employee wins Unsung Hero award
An employee at Muncaster Castle has been recognised with an Unsung Hero award. Hannah Clapp won the award at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2025 finals. Her hard work and behind-the-scenes contributions at the castle were celebrated at the ceremony in Brighton. She was then able to secure a place in the VisitEngland finals. Ms Clapp, head of experiences at Muncaster Castle, said: "I am absolutely delighted that all the hard work we put in at Muncaster has been recognised at a national level in the tourism Oscars. "I could not be happier. "It is such an exciting time to be at Muncaster and a huge thank you to everyone for their support." The team at Muncaster Castle said they are proud of Hannah's achievement.
