Hitchcock heroine Kim Novak to receive Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion award
ROME – Hollywood actress Kim Novak, 92, best known for portraying the double life of Alfred Hitchcock's heroine in Vertigo (1958), has been awarded Venice's lifetime achievement award, the film festival said on June 9.
Despite a short-lived career, Novak became 'a living legend, earning her rightful place in history, with the respect and esteem of the film critics and industry alike', the festival added.
Novak said she was 'deeply, deeply touched' to receive the award, which will be presented during the festival, which runs from Aug 27 to Sept 6.
'To be recognised for my body of work at this time in my life is a dream come true. I will treasure every moment I spend in Venice. It will fill my heart with joy,' she said in a statement.
Novak played the chilling dual role of suicidal blonde Madeleine Elster and brunette shop girl Judy Barton in Vertigo, which was released in 1958.
Other memorable roles included a witch in Richard Quine's Bell, Book And Candle (1958); an adulteress in another Quine film, Strangers When We Meet (1960); and a prostitute with a big heart in Kiss Me, Stupid (1964) by Billy Wilder.
In 1965, she largely turned her back on Hollywood, refusing to accept the iron-fisted rule of studio executives, and turned to painting instead.
The festival's artistic director Alberto Barbera said that Novak had not planned on becoming an actress, but 'inadvertently' became a screen legend.
She was 'one of the most beloved icons of an entire era of Hollywood films, from her auspicious debut during the mid-1950s until her premature and voluntary exile from the gilded cage of Los Angeles a short while later', he said.
'Independent and non-conformist, she created her own production company and went on strike to renegotiate a salary that was much lower than that of her male co-stars,' he added.
The award 'celebrates a star who was emancipated, a rebel at the heart of Hollywood who illuminated the dreams of movie lovers', Barbera said.
The documentary Kim Novak's Vertigo (2025) by Alexandre Philippe, made in collaboration with the actress, will have its world premiere screening during the festival. AFP

"He was my baby," said the woman, who is testifying under the pseudonym Jane to protect her privacy. Asked under cross-examination by defence lawyer Teny Geragos if she currently loves Combs, Jane said, "I do." The woman said she enjoyed taking care of Combs, bathing him and falling asleep with him while watching television after 'hotel nights', their phrase for drug-fuelled encounters in which she would have sex with male entertainers while Combs watched. The questioning was part of Combs' strategy to portray Jane as a willing participant in the sexual encounters with him, not a victim of sex trafficking as prosecutors allege. Combs, 55, and the founder of Bad Boy Records, has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say Combs used force and threats of cutting off financial support to coerce women into taking part in the encounters, sometimes known as 'freak offs'. Over three days under questioning by prosecutors in Manhattan federal court, Jane said that she agreed to have sex with a male escort in front of Combs early in their relationship but that he later dismissed her requests to stop and threatened to stop paying her rent. On June 9, Jane said Combs kicked, punched and dragged her during an altercation at her Los Angeles home last June. Later that night, he told her to perform oral sex on a male entertainer even though she said she did not want to, Jane said. Under questioning by Ms Geragos on June 10, Jane said she researched the terms "cuck" and "cuckold" during her relationship with Combs to try to understand his desires. The words refer to men who enjoy watching female partners with other men, Jane said. "I just wanted to know why my partner wanted so many of these nights and what was driving him," Jane said. Combs' defence lawyers are expected to cross-examine Jane until June 12. Testimony is in its fifth week. Combs could face life in prison if convicted on all counts. Also known throughout his career as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs turned artists like Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars, elevating hip-hop in American culture and becoming a billionaire in the process. Netflix to invest 1 billion euros in Spain productions to 2029
[MADRID] US streaming giant Netflix said on Tuesday (Jun 10) it was going to invest more than 1 billion euros (S$1.47 billion) in productions in Spain, which has becoming one of audiovisual creation hubs in Europe. 'Over the next four years we plan to invest over one billion euros in Spain,' Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos said at an event in the company's studios near Madrid. 'With this investment, we will be able to contribute even more to the Spanish economy, create more Spanish jobs, tell more great stories made in Spain,' he said, standing alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The event marked the 10-year anniversary of Netflix's presence in Spain. It opened its studios there – the first ones outside the United States – in April 2019, shortly after finding global success with the Spanish crime series Money Heist. Since then, it has turned the 22,000-square-metre studios into one of its main sites for film and TV production in the European Union. According to Netflix, its activity in the country supports more than 20,000 jobs. AFP
