Bedti-Varada river-linking project gets a new eco-friendly design

Time of India5 days ago
Haveri: The Bedti-Varada river-linking project, which was previously halted due to strong opposition from environmentalists, is now being redesigned aimed at minimising environmental impact and improving irrigation in North Karnataka.
The updated plan includes a new approach to channel water from the Bedti River to the Varada River through two routes.
As the project, which has been under discussion for nearly 25 years, faced considerable opposition from the residents in the Bedti basin, the govt showed no interest in implementing it. However, the project has garnered the support of Haveri MP Basavaraj Bommai. The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) has submitted a modified plan for the project from its Bangalore divisional office to Delhi for review.
The new design outlines plans to transfer 18.4 TMC of water from the Bedti River to the Varada River through two linkages. The first approach involves directly lifting water from the Bedti River to the Varada River without disturbing the surrounding area. The second approach entails storing water in the Dharma reservoir, which will then be channeled to the Varada River. The two routes are allocated 10.6 TMC and 7.6 TMC of water, respectively.
It is estimated that 18 TMC of water can be utilised from the Bedti-Varada River-Linking project. The primary objective of the project is to provide irrigation support to the districts of Haveri, Gadag, Koppal, and Raichur. Proponents argue that the water from the Bedti River, which flows through the Western Ghats and ultimately drained into the sea, is underutilised. The NWDA initiated a study on the Bedti River diversion project as early as 2003, but it was abandoned due to opposition from the locals.
"The Bedti-Varada River-Linking is a long-awaited project that was held up due to concerns about its environmental impact. Now, efforts are being made to implement the project in an eco-friendly manner. I will meet with Union minister of Jal Shakti, CR Patil, next week to discuss the project. A public awareness meeting will be held in Haveri on Aug 10, followed by another meeting in Gadag district," said Bommai.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann flags off first train of women sarpanch, panch delegation to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded

Patiala: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Wednesday flagged off the first train with a delegation of 500 women sarpanches and panches heading to Maharashtra to pay obeisance at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded and participate in the National Convention of Women Panchayats. Terming it as a 'red letter day', the CM said the delegation departed from the state on Wednesday for Maharashtra to participate in the National Convention of Women Panchayats. He said the delegation comprised representatives from high-performing panchayats. The purpose of the visit was to enable Punjab's women sarpanches and panches to gain new experiences through mutual discussions with panchayat representatives from other states, he said, adding that this would enable these elected representatives to further ensure the holistic development of their respective villages. "The panchayats are the 'Pillars of Democracy' and in villages, schools, dispensaries, veterinary hospitals, and other public welfare arrangements are directly managed under the supervision of the panchayats. In light of this, the move was crucial, as all the departments related to village development function under panchayat oversight," said Mann and expressed hope that the visit would boost the confidence of women representatives and help them gain new insights for the development of villages. Meanwhile, the CM said the govt would also facilitate these women to pay obeisance at Takht Sri Hazur Sahib Nanded. He reiterated that this initiative was undertaken to commemorate the 350th martyrdom day of the ninth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Sahib, adding that the govt would bear the entire cost of boarding and lodging for these women. Mann said this special train had been arranged to facilitate their visit to the sacred site, adding that two more such trains would be sent shortly. He emphasised that Nanded Sahib holds immense spiritual importance for every Punjabi, and many aspired to visit it at least once in their lifetime. He added that these women exemplify the spirit of women empowerment , and the govt wanted to honour their contributions by enabling them to undertake this pilgrimage. Mann expressed hope that the representatives from panchayats would pray for peace, progress, and prosperity of the state and its people. Times of India's Edit Page team comprises senior journalists with wide-ranging interests who debate and opine on the news and issues of the day. Trump delaying tariffs on China while targeting India shows our lack of strategic tech and manufacturing The chip war between US and China is back on the table with Washington reportedly working out a deal to take 15% from the sale of Nvidia's and AMD's AI chips to China. This effectively makes US govt a business partner to Nvidia and AMD, and comes after Washington allowed resumption of chip sales to China. The latter had been halted by Trump in April as part of his trade tussle with Beijing. However, he was forced to lift the ban after China retaliated with its own ban on rare earth exports to US. Beijing has now sent notices to Chinese companies discouraging the use of Nvidia chips citing security concerns. Parallelly, however, US and China have decided to extend their tariff truce till Nov. This is in stark contrast to Trump's approach to India, which is now facing the prospect of 50% tariff on its exports to US. The entire episode holds out two key lessons. First, the tech war is here to stay. Whether it's US chip sales to China or China trying to undermine tech manufacturing in India as highlighted by its recent pullout of Chinese engineers from Foxconn's India plants, this is a strategic sector that every country will try to leverage or weaponise. And with the advent of AI, India's expertise in software and coding is no longer that attractive. Therefore, India must not waver in its determination to master bedrock tech like semiconductor manufacturing and design, as well as AI. Countries like Estonia are integrating AI in their education systems. Plus, the recent spat between Elon Musk and OpenAI boss Sam Altman over listing in Apple's App Store shows how fiercely companies are competing over AI tech. India must not lag behind. Second, Trump's targeting India with big tariffs because he feels it doesn't have anything strategic to offer. That's not the case with China given its manufacturing muscle. Similarly, Taiwan's cutting-edge semiconductor industry makes it vital to tech supply chains, and therefore, a prime candidate for tariff exemptions. India too needs to cement a crucial spot in global manufacturing by investing heavily in domestic R&D, technical education and AI. It's work that can't be delayed. HC quashes PIL against ex-judges with 10,000 fine

Chennai: Calling it frivolous and publicity-seeking, Madras high court has dismissed a PIL seeking action against seven former judges of the high court for 'interfering' with the judicial process by addressing a letter to Justice G R Swaminathan. The letter asked him to refrain from initiating contempt action against an advocate. The court also imposed 10,000 as fine on petitioner Varaaki. "This plea is nothing but a publicity-seeking litigation. The issue will be dealt within the administrative side of the court. We do not want people like you to poke your nose into such matters," the first bench of Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice Sunder Mohan said on Wednesday. "Irrespective of the merits of the pending cases before the court, we are not convinced with the submission made by the petitioner that such letters or communication, if any, sent by any person, including the former judge as named in the petition and impleaded as respondent, are intended to influence judicial proceedings," the court said. In the result, the writ petition is liable to be dismissed and is, accordingly, dismissed with cost of 10,000 payable to the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority within two weeks, the bench said. The issue pertains to a complaint lodged by Madurai-based advocate S Vanchinathan, alleging 'caste-based bias' against Justice Swaminathan to the CJI. On the presumption that the bench headed by Justice Swaminathan was likely to initiate contempt of court action against Vanchinathan, seven former judges of the court led by Justice K Chandru addressed a communication to Justice Swaminathan, asking him to refrain from initiating any such action, as it is for the chief justice of India to take a call on the complaint. Alleging that the appeal made by the seven retired judges to Justice Swaminathan amounts to interference in judicial proceedings, a petitioner, Varaaki, filed the present plea seeking to forbid the retired judges from issuing such letters.
