Indian Express2 days ago

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta handed out tablets to 87 CBSE toppers from classes 10 and 12 in various government schools at a Pratibha Samman Samaroh or felicitation ceremony held Friday at Rajkiya Pratibha Bal Vikas Vidyalaya, Rajpur Road. While 16 of the students were from Class 10, as many as 71 were from Class 12.
Twenty government schools, which recorded 100 per cent pass, were also gifted computers during the ceremony. Commending the toppers, Gupta said, 'Students have achieved this milestone through dedication, discipline, and relentless effort… The Delhi Government is proud of all of you,' adding that she studied at a government school in Ashok Vihar. 'If you have the will, a clear vision, and the zeal to work hard, no goal is too far.'
'It is time that Delhi government schools become the first choice for parents. Just as people consider government colleges like Delhi University a world-class destination for higher education, our schools too must become symbols of pride and excellence at the school level,' the chief minister said.
With the BJP government completing 100 days, Gupta shared key policy decisions after congratulating all officials, teachers, parents, and students for 'the transformative steps taken in the education sector.' The chief minister underlined that under the new government, the school administration, infrastructure, modern libraries, smart classrooms, digital services, and multilingual education has seen an overhaul. The government's efforts would also help students compete nationally and globally, she added.
The chief minister also criticised the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for 'excluding underperforming students to artificially improve results,' while claiming that the BJP government is committed to ensuring inclusive education.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood, who addressed the gathering, praised the role of mothers in the students' success. He said, 'Behind every student achieving excellence in Delhi today is the tireless support of a mother.'
Noting an existing imbalance between private and government schools in Delhi, the minister said, 'But now the situation is changing. Under the chief minister's leadership, the government is bringing wide-ranging reforms to the education system.'
Sood also reaffirmed that 75 new CM Shri Schools will be opened this year in Delhi, featuring 'state-of-the-art infrastructure, experiential learning, and integration of values rooted in Indian culture.'
These schools will be positioned as national models of excellence, he said. In addition, Sood said, 'Our goal is to ensure that students in government schools have access to the same high-quality facilities as those in private schools. Every child deserves a fair opportunity, and education must be the path to their brighter future.'

'Different sets of rules for Hindus and Muslims in Bengal': BJP on arrest of Instagram influencer Sharmishtha Panoli

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Agnimitra Paul on Monday directed her attack at the West Bengal government after the arrest of 22-year-old Instagram influencer Sharmishtha Panoli, alleging a lack of free speech and unequal treatment of communities in the state. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The remarks came after Panoli was remanded to 14-day judicial custody for allegedly making communal comments in a video on social media. Speaking on the incident, Paul said, "Kangana Ranaut very rightly said that don't make West Bengal another North Korea because there's no freedom of speech there. There is no constitutional freedom of speech in West Bengal, and there are two different sets of rules for Hindus and Muslims." She also thanked the Bar Council and Kangana Ranaut for supporting Panoli. "I thank the Bar Council and Kangana Ranaut (for standing by Panoli). Every Indian, Hindu and nationalist Muslim must stand against this injustice," she added. Paul accused the state government of selective enforcement and bias, saying, "We have seen so many posts from West Bengal lately abusing India, PM Modi, our Goddess Maa Kamakhya, after , but no action was taken... It is a clear message from the Mamata government that if you are a Hindu or a Muslim who is abusing or saying something against Muslims, you will not be spared, but if it is the opposite, no action will be taken." She urged the Hindu community in West Bengal to rise, saying, "Hindus of West Bengal also need to rise; they are sleeping under the cloud of secularism. We need to have a neutral government... The police of the state today only see a religion." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BJP leader also cited specific instances of alleged bias, claiming, "No action was taken against Anubrata Mondal, a TMC leader who abused a police officer... The Mamata government only works for the Muslims, not for Hindus." On Panoli's arrest, Paul said, "Sharmishtha Panoli repeatedly apologised and also deleted the post and inspite of it, 's police, being proactive, went to Gurugram and arrested her." She further accused the Mamata-led state government of ignoring similar actions by others: "Mahua Moitra repeatedly abuses our Goddess... but no action taken... Court stated that riots of Murshidabad was done by TMC leaders... No action was taken... Mamata Banerjee doesn't consider Hindus of any importance."* According to police sources cited by PTI news agency, Panoli's video criticised Bollywood actors for their silence on Operation Sindoor. The post went viral, sparking backlash, and was subsequently deleted by Panoli, who also issued an apology. Despite this, she was arrested in Gurugram on Friday night after reportedly evading multiple police summons. Panoli, a law student originally from Kolkata's Anandapur area and currently studying at a university in Pune, has been charged under sections related to promoting enmity between groups and creating religious disharmony.

BJP targets Congress as Kharge's photo left out of Goa Statehood Day poster

NEW DELHI: The Goa Congress has drawn criticism after failing to include Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's photograph in a banner displayed during last week's Statehood Day celebration. The banner, which featured prominent party leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, state party chief Amit Patkar, and Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, was displayed at a meeting in Panaji on May 30. The event was organised after the cancellation of a public meeting in Navelim, South Goa, shere Kharge was expected to attend. The ruling BJP seized the opportunity to criticize the Congress, posting the banner's image on its X handle. "Mallikarjun Kharge's photo deliberately left out from Congress' official Goa Statehood Day banner - a snub to the party's own national president?" the BJP wrote, accusing the Congress of "humiliating their Dalit president." Meanwhile, Goa Congress chief Amit Patkar dismissed the issue as a minor oversight. "Kharge's picture was erroneously left out from the poster," Patkar told PTI. He defended the party by pointing out that Kharge's image appeared on other posters displayed across the city during the celebration. "This is a small error. Why are you making an issue out of it? We are raising more serious issues against the BJP," Patkar added, attempting to downplay the controversy.

LoP Rahul Gandhi moves Jharkhand HC to quash Non-Bailable Warrant issued by Chaibasa court

Ranchi: Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has approached the Jharkhand High Court seeking cancellation of a Non-Bailable Warrant (NBW) issued against him by the MP-MLA special court in Chaibasa in connection with a 2018 case over alleged derogatory remarks against then BJP National President Amit Shah. The NBW was issued on May 22 after LoP Rahul Gandhi failed to respond to earlier court summonses. The Chaibasa court has directed him to appear in person on June 26. LoP Gandhi's legal counsel has argued in the High Court that a petition filed under Section 205 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) -- which seeks exemption from personal appearance in court -- is still pending before the same court. Therefore, the issuance of a NBW while the exemption plea remains unheard is premature and legally inappropriate, the petition contended. The case stems from a complaint filed by Chaibasa resident Pratap Katiyar on July 9, 2018. According to the complaint, Gandhi allegedly stated during a Congress session that, "No murderer can become the national president in the Congress. Congressmen cannot accept a murderer as the national president -- this is possible only in the BJP." The remark was seen as a veiled reference to Amit Shah, who at the time was the BJP's National President. In response to the complaint, the Chaibasa court had initially issued a bailable warrant in April 2022. However, LoP Gandhi reportedly did not respond to the summonses. Subsequently, a NBW was issued in February 2024. His legal team filed an application seeking an exemption from personal appearance, which was rejected by the trial court. Following this, Rahul Gandhi had moved the Jharkhand High Court, which granted him temporary relief. But with the matter still pending, the lower court's latest issuance of a non-bailable warrant prompted the LoP to file a fresh petition in the High Court.
