ANPR cameras installed at Theni Road checkpost to boost monitoring
The new system uses AI-enabled cameras that can capture clear images of vehicle number plates even at high speeds. These cameras are linked to the city's integrated command and control centre and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), allowing real-time identification of traffic violations and automatic generation of challans upon approval.
So far, three ANPR cameras were installed — one at Kalavasal junction and two along Thiruparankundram Road.
Officials said the network will be expanded to 15 key locations across the city within two months. The next phase of installation is expected to focus on the Dindigul–Madurai Bypass Road and other major intersections.
Each camera, costing around 1.5 lakh, is capable of storing data for up to 45 days. In addition to identifying vehicles, the system can also capture driver images, making it useful for tracking stolen vehicles and flagging habitual violators.

Bhiwani family refuses to receive woman teacher's body, demand arrest if killers
1 2 Rohtak: A day after the dead body of a woman teacher was found in Bhiwani, the family of the teacher, Manisha, on Thursday refused to accept her body after the post-mortem. They insisted that the police first arrest her killers. Manisha's uncle, Kuldeep, her father, Sanjay, and a large number of relatives gathered at the civil hospital in Bhiwani and said they could block the road in protest. To prevent any blockade, police personnel from the city police station and Loharu police station were deployed on the spot. BJP MP from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh, Chaudhary Dharambir Singh, reached the hospital, heard the family's concerns, and tried to persuade them. According to the police investigation so far, two points have emerged: first, the teacher was abducted and kept somewhere before the killing; second, after the murder, her body was dumped near a canal in fields at Singhani village of Bhiwani. Her mobile phone has not yet been recovered. Manisha's last call was to her father on Aug 11, in which she said, "I will be late." To trace the accused, police have formed six teams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Secret Lives of the Romanovs — the Last Rulers of Imperial Russia! Learn More Undo Loharu SHO Ashok said spot inspection and probe indicate Manisha was last seen heading towards Kharkari road, which is the route to her play school and nursing college. It is not yet clear whether she reached the college. CCTV footage is being examined. Sanjay, a resident of Dhani Laxman village, has three children. The eldest, Manisha, taught at a play school and usually returned home by the school bus. On Aug 11, the day she went missing, she did not take the bus. Around 1–1:30 pm, she called her father saying she would be late as she had to go for admission at the nursing college, located about 1–1.5 km from her play school. When she did not return by evening and calls went unanswered, the family lodged a missing report. On Aug 13, a farmer found a young woman's body near the canal at Singhani; her neck was slit. Police said that the murder likely occurred on the night of Aug 12–13 or the morning of Aug 13; drag marks at the recovery site suggest the body was dumped there after the killing. Renukaswamy murder case: Kannada actor Darshan arrested; held after SC quashed bail request
Kannada film star Darshan Thogudeepa was arrested on Thursday after the Supreme Court cancelled his bail in the Renukaswamy murder case. The arrest came hours after his friend and co-accused, actress Pavithra Gowda , the prime accused in the case, was taken into police custody. According to police sources, Darshan was detained at his wife Vijayalakshmi's residence in Hosakerehalli, Bengaluru. As per sources cited by the PTI, the actor had planned to evade arrest and surrender in court, but they received a tip-off about his whereabouts and acted swiftly. A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan quashed the interim bail granted to Darshan by the Karnataka High Court, saying the order was issued without proper consideration of witness intimidation allegations and other irregularities. The Karnataka government had challenged the HC's decision in the apex court. Welcoming the verdict, Advocate DL Chidananda, representing the State, said, 'The Supreme Court said that the High Court has not followed the principles of law which apply for granting bail. It also reiterated that the rule of law prevails in the country and, however influential an individual may be, they must be treated in accordance with the law.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo Congress leader Rizwan Arshad supported this, saying, 'They have built up a crystal clear case. Despite that, he got bail... As a government, we had to appeal against the bail, and that's what we did.' Karnataka CM's legal advisor, AS Ponnanna, argued that granting bail would have damaged the case. 'The state government and the prosecution agency were vindicated... It was the state government's decision that, in a case like this, where a serious offence has been registered, granting him bail would hamper the investigation and trial, as he is a powerful person. They did not want him to use his muscle to derail the prosecution's case,' he said. Darshan has been named in the chargesheet over the killing of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a Chitradurga resident whose body was found in Bengaluru's Kamakshipalya on 9 June 2024.
