Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Hilton cheerleading
HILTON, N.Y. (WROC) — The Hilton cheerleading team has been racking up awards all season long. Now, they're the Primetime 585 Spotlight Team of the Week.
Hilton has been dominant all year. They won their division at the Mercy tournament. They also have won their division and been named the grand champions at tournaments in Attica, Eastridge, and Gates-Chili.
'I know my team is going to do amazing. We are the dream team,' said Hilton senior cheerleader Taylor Kowalski. 'We've done so, so good this season. It's just so exciting to get out on the floor and put it out there knowing we're going to do so good.'
On Wednesday night, they won the Division One title at the Monroe County Championships against some of the most talented teams in Section V, despite facing adversity.
'We go into everything with intention, as polished as we can be. [Our team] is getting over the flu right now. We had one hour of practice this week,' said head coach Shelly Caamano. 'We came out here and had all of our fingers and toes crossed but their bodies and their minds, they just know what to do.'
Lillyann Dalle and Gianna Bianchi were named First Team All-County while Irelyn Dooley and Mia Hicks took Second Team honors.
'We are screaming for each other in each and every section,' said senior Gianna Bianchi. 'Even at practice, we keep the same energy, the same motivation because we know that just because we're at the top right now doesn't mean we're going to stay there. We're always working hard at practice to make sure we're better than the time before.
Hilton has a team full of athletes and is looking to win their third straight sectional title. Congratulations to the Cadets on being named our Spotlight Team.

Meath strike late to draw with Armagh in All-Ireland Ladies opener
Meath and Armagh played out a thrilling 3-8 to 2-11 draw in their All-Ireland Ladies SFC opener at Pairc Tailteann. The Orchard County led by four with less than three minutes left to play before substitute Shauna Ennis hit the net for the hosts and Vikki Wall kicked an equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game. Advertisement In a meeting of the two big hitters in Group Three it was level at the break as 2-4 played 1-7. Wall hit the first goal of the game, punishing some slack Armagh defensive play on 11 minutes. Aoife McCoy replied with a major for the Ulster champions before Aoibhinn Cleary added a second home goal on the whistle. Armagh, who contested this years Division One league final, outscored their hosts 1-4 to 0-1 in the 15 minutes after half-time with Niamh Reel and McCloy on target before Kelly Mallon added a second goal to give the Orchard county a four-point lead. Meath didn't register their first second half score until the 47th minute through Emma Duggan. Advertisement Caroline O'Hanlon tapped over a free to put her side four up with less than three minutes to play. There only looked to be one winner before Ennis' goal and Wall's late leveller shared the points. Meath will go to Kildare next weekend while Armagh will host the Lilywhites in a fortnight with both sides looking to secure home advantage in the last eight.

Local Special Olympics torch run marks 39 years
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Special Olympics athletes know most events have a start and finish. A torch run Friday started at Cobbs Hill Park. 'I know it's a little rain, but we got through it,' Special Olympic athlete Jacob Babcock said. At the run, Babcock reconnected with some of the members of local law enforcement who ran with him during the pandemic. 'So me, Erin, John 'Pre,' and all them and Brett Sobrieraski and Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter, we all came together, it was such an amazing process,' Babcock said. He's talking about Rochester Police Detective Erin Rogers. She helps with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. 'As soon as you see the athletes and see how excited they are to see you and how they're supportive of you, there's nothing better than that and you just want to support them back,' Rogers said. Cori Piels, also an athlete, will tell you that relationship means a lot. 'It's so nice to have the support of law enforcement. If we didn't have them, we wouldn't be doing this,' Piels said. The two groups have been doing the torch run together for 39 years. The event gives Chris Teich and everyone else a chance to celebrate all things Special Olympics. 'It embodies family, friendship, leadership and so much more,' athlete Chris Teich said. This year's course took them through Park Ave and all the way to Parcel 5 where they stopped running, making it look like this event is one of those that has a finish, but because of the bond between all of them, there's no end in sight. Primetime 585 Shining Star: AJ Morgan
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — For Friday's Primetime 585 Shining Star Spotlight — where we introduce you to some student athletes who are brightening up our community — we're highlighting AJ Morgan! AJ is a sophomore track star at Webster Schroeder High School. In her second season of outdoor varsity track, she decided to take on the pentathlon. She made first team all-county in Pentathlon and second team all-county in hurdles and high jump. AJ was the Section Five Class-A and Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference pentathlon champion. She was also the pentathlon champion in the His and Hers Invite where she was named MVP. She went on to break Webster's Girls Pentathlon record at the State Qualifier meet. Now she's headed to states next weekend. On top of all that, she won the Devin Snyder Outstanding Female Athlete Award. A big congratulations to AJ, from all of us here at News 8 — and thank you for brightening up our community!
