Former Halifax Infirmary nurses celebrate 57th graduation anniversary
Retired nurses reminisce nearly six decades after graduating together from the Halifax Infirmary Hospital Nursing School. Retired nurses reminisce nearly six decades after graduating together from the Halifax Infirmary Hospital Nursing School. This year marks the 57th anniversary of a graduating class from the Halifax Infirmary. On Sept. 1, 1968, a small class of registered nurses graduated from the original hospital. The nurses met on Wednesday to celebrate their 57th reunion. The group commented on how special their careers were and the bond it brought them working together. 'It's provided all of us with a very good life,' said Connie Ells. They also gave advice to nursing students entering the field. 'Pick the brains of the senior nurses,' said Sue Omstead. 'I know sometimes senior nurses can be pretty scary for new grads that come on but they're a wealth of information.' This was the first reunion since 2018, and although many of the nurses have moved to different parts of the country, they have all still managed to keep in contact over the years. 'Even if it has been five or six or 10 years,' said Carol Leverman. 'We always get together.' The nurses hope to hold their next reunion in three years for the 60th anniversary. Nunavut government spokesperson Casey Lessard said in an email that health workers and virtual mental health support is already being offered to affected residents.
