How backpacker was found after 11 freezing nights lost in the Australian Outback
It was only by 'sheer luck' that a woman happened to be driving past the 'confused and disoriented' 26-year-old wandering miles from where she had to abandon her van.
WA police acting detective inspector Jessica Securo said: 'She basically looked at the direction of the sun and tried to head west, thinking that would be her best bet of coming across someone or a road.'
When finally found, Carolina was 'exhausted, dehydrated and hungry', 'ravaged' by mosquitoes, and covered in cuts and bruises.
She was taken to the police and airlifted to a Perth hospital for treatment.
'This is the best result we could have hoped for,' Ms Securo said.
'We're incredibly grateful that she's been found safe, and obviously this is a huge relief for her family and all of her loved ones.
'We never gave up hope that Carolina would be found safe and well … the support of our WA community is our greatest asset, particularly in a state as vast as ours.
'It's sheer luck. The area out there is mixed terrain. It can be quite dangerous if you don't know what you're doing or where you're going, and it's very easy to get lost.'
The German backpacker is not expected to be released until later, with Ms Securo saying she still needs further 'emotional support' alongside other medical treatment.
'She's had a good night's sleep. She's had a shower,' the officer said.
'We've got her some food, which was a massive relief for her.
'So, she's just taking it one day at a time at the moment.'
Carolina is now in 'frequent communication' with her family who are relieved and thankful the Western Australian community came together to 'throw every resource at locating their daughter'.
Shehad been last seen on June 29 arriving in the van at a general store in the small agricultural community of Beacon, northeast of Perth.
Police found the van on Thursday, abandoned after getting stuck in dense bushland north of Beacon, with plastic orange traction tracks placed beneath the rear wheels.
'It appears that she has somewhat lost control of the vehicle, and then it's become mechanically unsound, and bogged,' Ms Securo said.
Carolina stayed with the van for one day before leaving the vehicle through 'panic', hoping to find help. More Trending
'She had minimal food and minimal water. From speaking to her, she has said she could have planned better,' Ms Securo added.
Police say she had spent two years backpacking around the country, and was working at mine sites in Western Australia while staying mostly at hostels.
'Carolina has told me that she loves Australia,' Ms Securo said.
'She still has so much travel to do here. She hasn't made it over to the east coast yet, so that's still on her bucket list.'

'Nightmare' Neighbour fined for rat infested garden in Melton Mowbray
A man has been handed a court bill for £1,200 for failing to tidy his 'nightmare' overgrown garden. Richard Bates, who lives in Melton Mowbray near Leicester, was approached by his local council in September 2024 over the overgrown vegetation at the front of his house. Man made friend strip before 'parading' him through Welsh village naked
A man who beat up his friend and made him remove his clothes before 'parading' him naked through the streets has been jailed. Swansea Crown Court heard that Karl Griffiths, 42, attacked his friend and the friend's partner during a gathering at a flat in Penclawdd on January 30. Griffiths, who the judge said was likely under the influence of alcohol or drugs, had taken the phones of the friend and his partner and accused them of stealing from him. The prosecuting lawyer said he then beat them using crutches while shouting abuse at the couple. Griffiths then 'demanded' that his friend take his clothes off and told him they were 'going for a walk,' the prosecutor said. He proceeded to force his naked friend outside and 'essentially paraded him naked around the streets' in the middle of the village. The ordeal was filmed by onlookers in the village, before continuing when they returned to the flat, the court heard. Griffiths then smashed a TV and called police, saying: 'Someone better come and get me, I'm going to kill someone'. He was arrested and told police he had gone to his friend's flat after arguing with his mother. Griffiths admitted to giving his friend 'a clip' and hitting him with 'a few punches'. In an impact statement which was read to the court by the prosecution barrister, the victim said the experience had a massive impact on his mental health and left him feeling unsafe in his own home. But he added that while what the defendant did to him and his partner was 'not right' he did not support the prosecution. Griffiths had previously pleaded guilty to battery, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and kidnapping when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. The court heard he has a 'substantial criminal history' including non-domestic burglaries, dishonesty matters, weapons offences, and supplying Class A drugs. More Trending James Hartson, acting for Griffiths, said whatever grievance the defendant may have had with his friend it 'could not remotely justify the level of humiliation and violence' handed out. He said he had seen the mobile phone footage of the incident and said it was clear the victim was distressed as 'he was marched through the centre of Penclawdd in a state of undress'. Judge Huw Rees said Griffiths' behaviour had been 'irrational' and probably done under the influence of drink and drugs, but added it was clear from references he had read that other people thought well of the defendant and regarded him as a 'kindly man'. Griffiths was was sentenced to 31 months in prison. His barrister said he hoped his friend could eventually forgive him. Woman caught on camera waving knife and yelling racist abuse at man on street

The tense confrontation was captured on camera in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham after a disturbance between the pair broke out on Friday night. The unknown woman could be heard racially abusing the Asian male while brandishing a large blade outside a terraced house. The man then picks up a piece of cardboard and begins to strike her with it, before she then chases him down the street with the knife. The two can be heard trading insults, calling each other fat, before the woman begins slashing at him with the blade in the middle of the residential street. An onlooker arrives on the scene to try and intervene, telling the woman to put down the knife, while the man pulls the rucksack from his back. He then proceeded to hit her multiple times with the bag before she stumbled into a nearby car, and the bystander managed to step in between the pair. The footage has since gone viral online, with one user writing: 'There's no space for knife crime, no matter how young or old, male or female. 'Find another solution because it will cause devastating effects, ones that would end up regretting.' Another added: 'No person should be waving a knife around like that and getting away with it.' Metro has contacted the West Midlands Police for comment. In London earlier this month, a party at a park ended with dozens of screams after an attacker began swinging a large knife at a woman. The weapon was inches from slashing the terrified victim, as she backed away while others fled. A man filming the attack can be heard screaming, 'She backed out a shank, are you mad?' meaning she brought out a knife. Police arrived at 10 pm after the video went viral on social media, but they could not locate the alleged knife-wielder or weapon, the force told Metro.
