Lawmakers call for sentencing reforms as Marcy officers return to court
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Lawmakers and advocates are calling for the passing of sentencing reforms as three corrections officers appear in court Tuesday morning.
Three of the officers connected to the deadly beating of Robert Brooks are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in Utica. They were offered more time to decide on their plea agreements, despite objections from the prosecution.
Meanwhile, in Albany, lawmakers are calling for the passage of the Second Look Act, Earned Time Act, and Marvin Mayfield Act. These bills aim to allow incarcerated individuals to apply for sentence reductions and eliminate mandatory minimum sentences, among other changes
Some of the advocates of these bills include the family of Robert Brooks. Investigators say Brooks was beaten in an infirmary at Marcy Correctional Facility and died from the attack. Multiple officers have been charged with murder.
The three officers will be in court at 9:30 a.m.

Milton Chogllo, a 31-year-old from Newark, was found guilty by a jury of second- and third-degree aggravated assault, according to court documents. More Local News According to an investigation on March 5, 2023, Chogllo strangled and beat his 32-year-old wife outside their home on Bergen Street. At the time of the assault, the victim was six months pregnant, authorities said. The woman's 14-year-old daughter witnessed the assault, police said. Chogllo is scheduled for sentencing on July 18, 2025. The victim's daughter provided crucial testimony during the trial against Chogllo, officials said. Man charged with assault for allegedly attacking and strangling neighbor

MURRAY, Utah () — A Murray man has been charged with assault after banging on his neighbor's door and allegedly physically attacking him when he came outside. Bryan M Barrios, 31, was charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor assault, threat of violence, property damage, and public intoxication. On May 21, 2025, just before 9 p.m., a Murray City police officer was called to a disturbance near Regal Street in Murray. When the officer arrived, a group of people were standing outside and pointed out a man they said had attacked them. Two inmates charged for allegedly stabbing 'rival gang member' at Utah State Prison One person, the victim, was bleeding from several injuries and had a red mark and abrasion on his neck, according to the officer's arrest statement. The victim told the officer that his neighbor, Barrios, had begun banging on his door loudly, damaging the doorframe from the impact. When the victim opened the door to speak with him, documents say Barrios began yelling at him and physically attacked him. The victim recalled Barrios saying, 'I'm going to f– kill you!' and wrapping his arm around his neck to strangle him. According to documents, surveillance footage of the altercation showed Barrios attempting to strangle the victim, causing him to fall to the ground. Barrios then made a second attempt to strangle him, but the victim managed to pin Barrios' arms to his chest and stop the physical attack. The officer who apprehended Barrios reported that he smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. Barrios was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and was charged by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office on June 6. Police searching for missing man in Northampton County
PALMER TOWNSHIP, NORTHAMPTON COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The Palmer Township Police Department on Friday said they are searching for a missing person in Northampton County. Police are searching for 89-year-old Gene Brocious, who is described as weighing about 140 pounds and standing at about five feet, six inches, with gray hair and blue eyes. Brocious is also described by officials to have been wearing blue jeans, a blue jacket, and hearing aids, and was last seen in the area of the unit block of Milford Court on Friday at about 2:00 a.m. Police ask for help to ID child found in Scranton According to police, Brocious is reported to be driving a Black 2015 Toyota Corolla with a Pennsylvania license plate reading JXE-2203.
